Title: Help! Too many Universal Monster DVD's!
Post by: Pilgermann on July 11, 2007, 01:03:57 AM
Since I've deprived myself of proper movie viewing, I'm trying to gather up classic Universal monster films.  The troubling bit is that there are too many DVD releases to choose from, although all are affordable.  I just picked up '99 DVD release of The Invisible Man that I'm happy with (I've heard the sequels are nothing to scream about).

From what I've been able to research, my best bet for Dracula would be the '99 release (cheap, good picture and audio) or the Legacy Collection (pretty similar plus extra films).  For Frankenstein the 75th Anniversary one seems to be the best.

As far as The Wolf Man, Bride of Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and The Mummy, I'm not sure what to go with.  Any suggestions?

The Legacy Collections for all of the Universal Monsters are more than adequate Pilgermann. Universal has begun releasing some of them seperately again ("Creature from the Black Lagoon," "Frankenstein vs. the Wolfman," and several others are getting seperate releases later this month.) The Legacy collections contain ALL of the films  for the respective characters and all the sets have a good number of extras. If you can find them cheap, stick with them. That's my two cents.

I have the Wolfman, Mummy, Dracula, and Frankenstein Legacy Collections.  I have The Invisible Man and Creature from the Black Lagoon as stand-alone titles.  All of them are very good.

You cannot go wrong with Creature, fine as the others are.  And I have to add, that I wish I had your problem of having money to spend and too many good movies to decide on!

I would also rcommend some of Universal's other horror films from the same era,as in The RAVEN (Bela and Boris),the BLACK CAT (Boris and Bela),the OLD DARK HOUSE (dir. by James Whale),the INVISABLE RAY (Boris and Bela again!)  MURDERS in the RUE MORGUE (Lugosi), or MAN MADE MONSTER with Lon Chaney Jr.

A spooky clip from the OLD DARK HOUSE

I would just stick with the Legacy collections. You get all of the films in a respective monster series along with a pretty good helping of extras for the 1st film (which is usually the most revered anyway.)

I've been meaning to buy The Old Dark House as well.  I'm keeping track of a copy on eBay but it's getting a bit high for being a used DVD.  That clip was pretty brilliant and makes me want to see it even more!

Oh, and thanks for the tips.  I think I'll go with the Legacy collections for most of the films.
