EDIT: VLADO PERLEMUTER: Vlado Perlemuter RAVEL Piano Works Vol.1 (1979 there is also a Vol.2 highly recommended, but inferior to Vol.1) supplants any and all previously selected records, I simply took it for granted and gave it no thought.  I had a collection on a 1961 released vinyl VOX BOX set of three LPs, Maurice Ravel complete piano works (though long dead, this was not a complete Ravel set as some pieces were then unpublished).  These are re-recorded perfectly by the original artist, the only pianist that I have heard (with one exception) who can actually play Maurice Ravel's piano music as intended: VLADO PERLEMUTER

I couldn't possably do 10 as everything after 4 or 5 changes with my mood but the ones that are ALWAYS close to the cd player are:

This is a really hard exercise, as it seems none of my favorite bands are responsible for my favorite albums.  I mean, I own over 9 hours of Butthole Surfers music, yet I couldn't bring myself to put any of their albums on a top ten list.  :teddyr:

That's why I always have to put a honorable mention section to most of my lists to give props to albums that I love but just can't quite make the top 10 ranking.

BTW, what did you think of the newest Smashing Pumpkins album? It's really more of a Billy Corgan solo album under the SP moniker as it has session players on it in addition to him having session players on tour instead of the original/classic lineup.  My only issue with them is his vocals, I really wish that he would hire an excellent vocalist at times, but then again, I'm a huge Rush fan so I guess I don't have a right to be critical of vocals in some people's eyes.   :wink: 

I agree with ZARCAL that choosing 10 is now nearly impossible for me.  Some good choices there, particularly my "formal" favorite, Abbey Road, but do think the HEADS best album is Remain In Light.  

Couldn't agree more...for my long winded thoughts on Low you can find my review on Amazon credited to Allhallowsday (I also have ROXY reviews, too).  I really love that record.  I like all of ROXY MUSIC's first five albums.  ROXY's first and Country Life are my favorites, too, though Siren does haunt me. 

 
You have good taste.  Some of my favorites, too, Wish You Were Here is on my top 10 list.  My Aim Is True was one of the first "new wave" records I bought.  I purposely avoided mentioning VU & Nico as I've been playing selections from it a lot lately (more shameless self promotion: checkout my ill-received review on Amazon).  Also skipped another favorite which I'm listening to now: CAPTAIN BEEFHEART Safe As Milk.

Corgan hit his peak with the Pumpkins' album Adore.  I wasn't a fan of Machina.  ZWAN had some really amazing b-sides, but the songs that made it onto the album were really disappointing.  His solo album was awful.  I ordered a lot of CDs yesterday, actually, among them is the new Pumpkins.  So I can't say whether or not I like it yet.  I also ordered the new Meat Puppets and Queens of the Stone Age albums.


I completely agree.  Eno's contributions and the direction of the first era of Roxy Music made for much better music.  Though we wouldn't have to search very hard to find a music critic to disagree with us.  Avalon seems to top an awful lot of lists.

Quite a bit of my music collection is made up of music along these lines.  A lot of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Rolling Stones, etc.  Are you a fan of Blur?  Park Life and Great Escape capture the same sort of British glam-pop sound quite well.


Thanks!  :teddyr:  Aside from the Flying Burrito Brothers and Sammy Davis JR, I have all the albums in your list.  I suspect there's quite a bit of overlap in our collections.  I love Beck's irritatingly experimental early work, as well as his abrupt downshift into Sea Change, but I rarely listen to Odelay.  Captain Beefheart is great.  I broke down and bought a huge box set a few years back.  It didn't disappoint.  In addition to VU, it is also worth mentioning Lou Reed's Transformer.

I happen to have a crush on Peaches, so I should probably toss her album The Teaches of Peaches out there as a notable mention, so as not to offend.

Interesting choice picking Combat Rock. I figured that most people would list either one of their earlier albums or espcially London Calling.  I think that Combat Rock is kind of underrated but I would pick London Calling as my favorite Clash album.

I have all of The Clash, Combat Rock was one of the anthem albums that we played all the time in Lebanon in the early 80's when it came out, it seemed to fit with Rockin' the Casbah. I tend to sort albums like they did in 'High Fidelity' in Semi Autobiographical order.
London calling is a great album and I keep The Story of the Clash, Volume 1 around to play fairly often, but I also think Sandinista! tends to be overlooked at times.

THE STOOGES first album is wonderfully "dumb" and alot of fun; one of my favorites.  Let It Bleed was my favorite STONES album, but I'm leaning towards Exile On Main Street these days.  Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables was the best DEAD KENNEDYS album and a real collector's item I gave away...I listen to a lot of surf music, so THE VENTURES "Diamondhead" is a favorite; THE CRAMPS Bad Music For Bad People is a wonderful collection of their best including "Garbage Man" and "Human Fly;" Hendrix's Electric Ladyland is one of my favorite albums and includes some of my favorite Jimi. 
Well, THE STOOGES Raw Power is weirdly noted as Kurt Cobain's favorite record, and it is damned good, though Fun House is probably the best Rock record yet recorded which is high praise (at least it made it to your secondary list!)  HANK WILLIAMS is only under-appreciated and a huge favorite of mine!  More karma for Bela?  Yup. 

I think if you try out those two that you're missing, you won't be disappointed.   Transformer is hard to overlook...

It is hard to pin down favorite albums...I enjoy such a wide variety....I love jazz,and Stan Getz is a master! Also,as a teenager had ALL the Pink Flyod records,(ANIMALS and WISH YOU WERE HERE were favs...I even had UMMA GUMMA!), Dick Dale,the Pretenders,(ALL hallows-1st album-YEAH!!!) ,the Butthole Surfers!, the Allman Bros BROTHERS and SISTERS album is great, Parliement and Funkadelic, Screaming Lord Sutch is goofy fun,the Mummies,the Ghasltly Ones,the Bomboras...dam...I could go on and on....OH! Any Kyuss (not a typo-not Kiss...KYUSS!) fans out there?

A lot of the "classic" mid-nineties bands were overplayed on the radio and MTV because they simply didn't have very large volumes of work.  Alice in Chains, White Zombie, and (the first two albums by) Stone Temple Pilots were also very much victims of this.

Although the alternative to overplaying great songs is playing a myriad of insincere sound-alike songs from corporate-made bands.  I for one would rather listen to the same three Faith No More songs in a loop than suffer through Linkin Park, Disturbed, Cold and the like.  *shudder*

Just who are the "rotting vegetables" I've often mused...
I thought In Utero was superior. 

Yes, Avalon, does top a lot of lists, I have it, know it well from my clubbing days, but I've yet to warm up to whatever charm it may have I've overlooked. 

I had a lot of Bowie on vinyl, but the only one I felt necessary to keep was Lodger.  I remember when Low was released and it was not well received then and wound up in bargain bins for years.  Other than Changesone, it's the first BOWIE release I'd bought in many years (well, I too am a victim of having seen the "Glass Spider" tour live in the 80s).  Hmm I probably have Scary Monsters on CD too.  BLUR has been recommended to me before, now I know I should look into them.  I have had many laundry lists over the years, but the music itself guides me to what I pursue. 


Can't stress enough giving those two you're missing a listen, assuming you like just plain great music.  Can you handle Country at all?  THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS Gilded Palace Of Sin will open your mind if you can't!  Perhaps some of BECK's work is "irritatingly experimental" (when I uploaded Odelay I must admit I skipped "High 5 Rock The Catskills") but I often listen to songs like "Hotwax," "Novacane," "Jack-Ass," "Sissyneck," and "Readymade."  BECK is a great songwriter (as you obviously noticed with Sea Change) and much more than a tape wiz or sampling savant. 

Did it include Trout Mask Replica?  Man, that record is tough, but I think I'm ready to tackle it one more time... the first time I heard it was about 30 years ago and I was appalled!  I hunted down a used CD of Shiny Beast.  I really love Safe As Milk.

Start with Great Escape.  I think you'll really enjoy it.  Another contemporary band along these lines is Super Furry Animals, though with a little more electronic tinkering.  If you haven't heard anything by them, check out Radiator or Guerrilla.  They also have an album entirely in Welsh called Mwng, which is quite enjoyable.


I more than tolerate country, I love it.  Good country, that is.  I don't much care for the contemporary pop country espoused by most radio stations these days.  Jolie Holland was #2 in my top 10 (though she's also kind of folky).   :teddyr:  I've already queued Flying Burritos to my Amazon list, so I'll pick that up next month.  I'll let you know what I think.  As for the Sammy Davis, JR title in your list, I own various compilations, just not that particular album.  Frank Sinatra is my favorite Rat Pack singer/actor though, largely due to being subjected to my godfather's drunken, improv crooning sessions as a kid.  :teddyr:


I actually misspoke.  It is an anthology, not a box set, called The Dust Blows Forward.  Strangely, it doesn't actually include the eponymous song, which is from Trout Mask.  But among its 45 tracks, some are from Trout:  Ella Guru, Moonlight on Vermont, China Pig, My Human Gets Me Blues, and Sugar N Spikes.  A friend of mine used to play Trout Mask Replica at his parties.  From what little I remember, it was pretty irritating.

Though nothing could ever hold a candle to Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music.  Enticed by the "remastered" sticker, I bought it without any prior knowledge of the album.  Oops.  :hatred:

I'm aware this is a pretty unusual mix but these are all albums I can listen to over and over and over again...always enjoyable to me on a very personal level. Four Canadian bands make my list, four of the most underrated groups ever IMO (Skydiggers, Spirit of the West, Grapes of Wrath and Fiftyfour40).

I think it is great you espouse support for Canadian bands, here in the USA, we'd be thinking local bands... but I understand the spirit.  Life's Rich Pageant was considered as at least an honorable mention and would certainly make my top 30.   Rocket To Russia and THE RAMONES first were also considered (albeit briefly).  I had to seriously consider rejecting London Calling from my list...saw U2 at Giants Stadium that year and MIDNIGHT OIL that year at the Spectrum in Philadelphia.  MIDNIGHT OIL was hot.

Mmm...there is a collection available as an import thru Amazon (enemy of the people) that includes the BURRITO BROS second album, Burrito Deluxe at a good  price.  I love the second album and its way underrated; includes "Wild Horses" before released by the STONES.

As for Country Music, what happened???  It's even crappier than the current Pop on the radio.  HANK WILLIAMS, MERLE HAGGARD, WILLIE NELSON, WAYLON JENNINGS, DOLLY PARTON, BOBBIE GENTRY, so much of it now is crap...hmm...


This record is not about the rat pack; you have to hear it to believe it.  It is just Sammy and Laurindo's guitar and maybe the greatest songs ever written.  The record owes perhaps a certain debt to the "rat-pack" but only for personality's license, but, there is no FRANK SINATRA album that I know of (and I know many) that can equal the incredible artistry of Sammy's individual expression.  Guess what?  I am not at all a SAMMY DAVIS JR. fan!  I have bought other SAMMY albums and collections (including California Suite which is way "rat-pack") and I don't care for them. 


Guess what?  I've considered purchasing Metal Machine Music perhaps because of its long standing reputation.  Just like I like BAD MOVIES I like BAD MUSIC!  LOU REED himself is cryptic regarding this release, thought of as a way to fulfill contractual obligations, but there are some who declare it a masterpiece!  I recieved as a Christmas present just last year the latest ROLLING STONE ALBUM GUIDE (as they call it, it used to be RECORD GUIDE; aren't records, records, even if distributed as CDs?)  And though bands like BLACK SABBATH have fared incredibly better than when first reviewed in 1979, Metal Machine Music is still considered the dud of duds. 

Bad music?!  You're talking to someone who owns Cycle Sluts From Hell on both CD and vinyl!  Haha.

Anyway, you can save yourself the price of admission on Metal Machine Music:  To emulate the sound, simply turn your radio to a static-laden station and crank it.  Then take your Fender Stratocaster and wave it in front of an amp.  Rinse and repeat for about an hour and you've recreated a piece of music history.  :teddyr:

 BAD music? Try the MENTORS. It's so bad it's ANTI-Music! Bought a tape of them once...out of morbid curiosity...they suck laffably!

Try BARNES & BARNES Voobaha which contains "Fish Heads" and "Something's In The Bag," bad, but in a very good way.  Or, THE SHAGGS Philosophy Of The World which is about as bad as bad gets, in a not-so-good way... so bad it's interesting. 

"In Utero" I felt was superior too. It just was so different from "Nevermind" . It felt as though Nirvana gave the record company what it wanted with "Nevermind" and just did what they really wanted musically with their second release. It was produced by Steve Albini from Big Black fame and it was more of a homage to Touch and Go releases from the 80s and early 90s.

Cycle Sluts From Hell ROCK!! But than again my favorite band is Anti-Nowhere League :smile:

Picked up BLUR's Great Escape -- really good songs, I need to give it more listens, I'm only on the third time around, it's on right now.  They sound like they could be from the early 80s, yet, they play their instruments too well!   :wink:

Like so many others, there is NO way I could give a permanent Top 10 Album list.  But, here are a few that are usually not too far out of hand, in no particular order. Oh yeah, I've seen so many good 'uns in this thread that I am trying to list ones not overly listed before, but there will be some repeats.

Excellent!  I'm really glad you gave them a shot.  Great Escape is quite a jump from their hit single Song 2, huh?  "Woohoo! .... Whoohoo! ..."  Given your other music tastes, I think you'll really appreciate Blur's Park Life as well.  I tend to introduce people to GE first because the 70s brit pop/dance elements are milder.  But if I was forced to choose, I'd probably side with PL myself.  Chances are you might too...

Evidently I do the same thing you do with new albums: play them over and over until the neighbors start whistling the rhythms.  It's kind of like that scene in Stepfather II...  Haha.  Actually, that very thing happened in this ancient three-flat I lived in briefly in Chicago, well, almost.  While I was getting the mail my upstairs neighbor bumped into me and dryly said, "So you like Nine Inch Nails then?"  Oops.  :teddyr:

Hey, earlier you had asked me what I thought of the new Smashing Pumpkins album.  Well, I finally picked it up and gave it a few listens.  I'm afraid I have to agree with the AllMusic review; it is really substandard and sloppy, given the impressive body of work prior to the split.  The first thing that really struck me was that it lacks the usual song-to-song contrast between heavy guitars and dreamy orchestration.  It really has no flow or direction of any kind, for that matter.  It's also strangely political, which doesn't seem to be one of Corgan's lyrical strengths.  But I got it used, and for $5 I don't feel too betrayed.  Now, I did manage to collect the three bonus tracks and I've gotta say, those are better than anything that made it onto the album, particularly the lo-fi eponym Zeitgeist.

Even DIVINE can't be this bad, though I must admit to sneaking FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS onto mixes I burn for friends  :twirl::

I have to admit to being a fan of THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS. Great funny, catchy stuff.

Never knew Divine did an album.  Odd. 
Can't be any worse than William Shatner or Don Johnson.  Although, I do like Johnson's "Heartbeat" song.

Ever wonder why Divine wasn't in Desperate Living?  He wanted to take a break from Waters' films.  He toured the dance circuit for a bit, mostly in Europe, and recorded a few albums (the one I posted was merely a compilation).  He also acted in a few off-Broadway plays:  Women Behind Bars and it's sequel, The Neon Woman.  I have a bootleg of the latter and it's really quite good.  He broke from Waters again in 1985 to star with Tab Hunter in the atrociously bad pseudo-western Lust for Dust.  After the success of Hairspray, he was invited to appear in an episode of Married With Children, though he died shortly before filming began.  The episode does have a dedication to him in the credits though.  :teddyr:

I heard that Divine was the inspiration for Ursula the Sea Witch in Disney's The Little Mermaid.  Which, if you look at her, has to be true.

Yes, I think this album is the awesome. Tarantino put together a great collection of forgotten or rarely heard gems. Amazing stuff.

Vanity 6 - Vanity 6 (1982)

Steamy lingerie funk with a dash of New Wave, Pop and Rock. A much seeked after cult album produced by Prince. I'm glad I bought the original CD when it first came out. My most treasured ever.

Led Zeppelin - In Through The Out Door (1979)

Zepp's most underrated in my opinion. Not a classic album by any means but Fool In The Rain and All My Love are soooo addictive. Love it.

Kid Rock - Devil Without A Cause (1998)

Even though I never bought Kid Rock's trailer trash schtick I still think this is one of the greatest white trash albums from the 90s. And it still holds up well these days  :tongueout:

Teena Marie - It Must Be Magic (1981)

White lady sings the blues. Teena remains a vocal phenomenon and her 1981 album is an excursion into sultry rhythm and blues, danceable funk and goosebump inducing ballads.

Your top ten are all great selections.  This specific Honorable mention stuck out at me.  I'm an Al fan, have the album, etc.  Thing is, sadly, most Al fans I know disregard it, despite the songs quality (all the parodies are great on it), because it's nothing more than a compilation cd put out by the record company to capitalize and make a quick buck.  I still like it.
