Title: Cave of the Silken Web
Post by: Andrew on August 01, 2007, 03:38:06 PM
This was a crazy movie.  Take a Shaw Brothers kung fu flick, give it a slant from the same legend that spawned "DragonBall" and then have a Bollywood director (it doesn't, but sure seems like it does).  I kid you not.  You have singing and dancing, kung fu, and a cave filled with evil women who want to eat a holy man and become immortal.  Lucky for the holy man, he is protected by his disciples, including a shapeshifting pig and the Monkey King.  The Monkey King looks vaguely simian, wears red, uses a staff, and can do magic by pulling out his hair.

The seven spider sisters spend most of their days singing and dancing in their cave.  They look human, though they can spin webs and then use them as places to rest.  The chance to eat the holy man and become immortal makes the spider women go to great lengths to kidnap him.  There are multiple kung fu fights, most with weapons, and the spider sisters have female spider servants (again, who look like women, but turn into little spiders when defeated) who join the fights.

There is an old drunken spirit who is the Earth Lord, a horny demon who sneaks into the spider cave to see his girlfriend (one of the spider sisters), a huge pot intended for boiling the holy man, and a lot of people changing their appearance and tricking each other:  like the times when there are two silver spider sisters, two Monkey Kings, the holy man and Piggy swap appearances - it even gets confusing for the audience.

Oh, and the spider sisters' major weakness is a big jug that the heroes borrow from another magical being.  The jug (it looks like a clay amphora) shoots fire like a flamethrower!

Three slimes, though it gets close to four; the movie suffers from some slow parts now and then, but it is a very odd duck.  I'm going to have to write a review for it.   The musical aspect of the movie drove my wife nuts, because she cannot stand Bollywood or Chinese musicals.

They spin webs?......
Anyone else wondering where the spinnerets are located?

Nothing so interesting as Cronenberg might have done.  They shoot out from their hands.
