Title: Bad Movie Torrents
Post by: ulthar on August 01, 2007, 09:21:02 PM
A couple of months ago, I discovered Public Domain Torrents (http://www.publicdomaintorrents.com) for downloading public domain movies.

Just in case anyone is interested, I'm currently seeding torrents for the following in mp4 format:

THE ATOMIC BRAIN
THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN"T DIE
COLOSSUS AND THE AMAZON QUEEN
THE CORPSE VANISHES
ASSIGNMENT OUTER SPACE
ATOM AGE VAMPIRE
COSMOS WAR OF THE PLANETS

I'll be adding more as I have time to download them.

I'll keep these seeds active indefinitely.  I'll post here if/when I drop the seeds.

You can some free downloads here ...

http://www.movieflix.com/ (http://www.movieflix.com/)

But if you pony up $7.95/mo you can get over 4000 more movies.

Though they claim to have a free selection, I just went through the entire list of sci-fi, and not a single one was "free;"  they all required the fee.

Question: I noticed they 'require' Real or WMP.  I don't have either, and what I am looking for is an iPod compatible format.  If I pay the $7.95 (not likely to convince the wife of that with the Netflix membership already in place), can I d/l mp4's from that site?

Their free selections are rather limited, I looked and didn't see anything on mp4's I just feed them to the big screen. I have a site book marker somewhere that have free movies on it (legal) and I think it had mp4's ... who knows what puter I bookmarked it on ... I'll look around and see of I can find it.

Well, in any case I started this thread to offer the 'service' of the seeds I have active to anyone that wants to grab them.

Always welcome info about new d/l sites, though.  Thanks.

One I tend to check out, is http://www.cultofuhf.com/
Although, I haven't really had a chance try out any of them yet, since I use dial-up.

I've been thinking thinking about switching from AOL's Dial-Up Advantage plan to Verizon High Speed for AOL with this week's paycheck. :twirl:

Good work Ulthar!  How good is the quality/average size of the file for download?  I ask because I've been after an old copy of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, but have not had the time to really search it out, and my bandwidth is currently pretty terrible.

Karma for sharing, even if I can't really jump on board as much as I'd like!

The download sizes average about 200 megabytes.  I am downloading mp4's - the iPod 'version.'  I've been watching some on my computer, and there is some pixelation and digital conversion effect even not at Full Screen, but they are watchable.  I imagine on an iPod screen, they'd look fine (I've not dumped them to my iPod yet).

I watched COSMOS - WAR OF THE PLANETS last night.  Oh man.  BAAAD, but not completely hopeless.  I'd say a one-slimer with fun moments.  Some of the acting is hilarious and the direction is laughable.  There were shining parts of tension, the story was interesting enough (could have been written better) and the 'theme' (man vs. machine) hits you over the head often enough that you cannot miss it.

I'm downloading Deep Red right now. Damn it's sloooow! Like .30 KB/s.
Umm, I didn't know this was a public domain movie.

Yep. That's why I'm keeping my seeds of the torrents up.  The main site is SLOW SLOW SLOW.  I can offer more bandwidth, and of course, if enough of us seed, it will help, too.

I guess at this point, this kinda' a dumb question, But what's the difference between torrents & podcasts?

I went to Public Domain Torrents, & couldn't get anything to work. Then I read the fine print & found out it requires some piece of software that I'm not too sure about.

Since I got my high speed service last week, I've had the most success downloading MP4s off Google Video.

Just saw Deep Red again. Man, was this movie BUTCHERED.
Oh well, I guess I shouldn't complain, it being free and all.

Since I got my high speed service last week, I've had the most success downloading MP4s off Google Video.

Briefly,  a 'torrent' a system of downloads that works by breaking a large file into chunks.  Though you may download the entire chunk from one source, the aim is to be grabbing chunks from different sources.  Each computer offering chunks is called a 'seed' and each user getting chunks is called a 'peer.'  It is possible (and common) to be a seed and a peer at the same time.

The reason for this is to spread the load across (many) computers - which helps server load but MAY also give you a faster overall download speed.

All of this is controlled by one "main" computer (per torrent) called a 'tracker.'  The seeds/trackers for the Public Domain Torrents are VERY VERY slow.  That is why I am keeping my seeds 'live' indefinitely.  Even a small network of seeds can result in reasonably fast downloads for users without putting undo load on any one seed or the tracker.

In contrast, when you download a file, mp4 or whatever, from a specific server, you are (a) putting ALL the load on that one server and (b) limited in transfer speed by the upload bandwidth of THAT server (usually..sometimes, it will be your d/l bandwidth that's the limit).

So, what is the difference between a torrent and a podcast?  Apples and oranges.  A torrent is a comunication protocol (that yes, needs a specific software to work, but these clients are FREE) that can be used to transfer ANY type of file.  In this case, I am providing seeds for the mp4 files of public domain movies, but you could use the torrent protocol for anything.

Hope this helps.

Do you mean the client for YOUR computer?

If so, I use Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/) and it's certainly one of those most popular bit torrent clients out there.  And free.

Uhm... If I turn this ting off, is it going to resume downloading the next time I turn it back on?

Yes.  It can.  You MAY have to restart the download manually.
