Title: All Time Favorite Atari 2600 Game
Post by: Mr. DS on August 05, 2007, 06:46:09 PM
If you had to choose one game you love/loved the most for Atari 2600 what would it be and why?

My vote goes to Combat.

Primarily because I have fond memories of spending hours playing with my older brother. I'd kick his @ss in ping pong tanks but it didn't stop there.  There were so many different games within the game.  Granted it all equaled a small box killing another small box but you get the point.

I always liked adventure and exploring themes, so games like Adventure and Haunted House were favorites, but my top choice would have to be Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I played that one to death.

I love combat because it had SO many game varieties in one cartridge (favorite was the invisible tanks where the bullet would bounce)

The ones I played the most were:

COMBAT
FAST FOOD (you're getting fatter!)
PITFALL
BREAKOUT
HAUNTED HOUSE (another 'level' game)

and i have 2 ataris and a box full of games. One of my joysticks is kaput, but i took it apart and sorta fixed it. The paddles are dead - a HUGE letdown since i love pong.

And once every couple of years i hook it up and play. Sure you can play online, but nothing beats having the tv and joystick experience. A friend even bought me the new atari console with the games built in, which is ok but kinda sucks because the variety stinks

Worst game?

BARNSTORMING. wtf, crashing into barns about made me want to pull every hair out of my head

I have to go with the majority of society about the Worst Game....

My brother begged for this game when it first came out.  My mother spent 50 bucks (a decent chunk of change for a game in the 80s) only so he could wander around countless screens, fall in pits and yes, end up dying when the man touched you.

Question for you all, when you used to play Frogger did you hold down the reset button to make the game "DUUUUUUUUUN Da Da Da" for the theme song.  It was a past time for yours truly.

I remember my friend getting E.T.  for Christmas one year. We sat down excitedly to play it and within an hour came to the realization that the game SUCKED.

I was a whiz at Barnstorming, though. :teddyr:

Well I loved Barnstorming myself and was very disappointed when my cousin suddenly claimed my version of the game for herself. A couple of other big time faves included Plague Attack, Dig Dug and Qbert.  Also liked DEFENDER because I ran past its top score three times on one occasion.

I remember playing that so much one time that I racked up dozens and dozens of extra lives/ships. When I decided to quit playing, I just started flying into enemies kamikaze style. I think I cleared three or four entire levels with just my bonus ships.

I second Raiders of the Lost Ark.
My stepbrother and I played that game for hours.

This ought to bring back memories:

My vote goes to Combat.

Dude, you got a Wii by any chance? There's an updated version of Combat (or at least the tank stuff) on Wii Play. Heh heh :teddyr:

My fav 2600 game? There were a lot. The best games my aunt and uncle had were Keystone Kapers, the aforementioned Combat, and River Raid, while the standouts in our house were probably Gopher (you played a farmer who had to keep gophers from eating his carrots by bashing in their heads with a shovel), Jungle Hunt (five levels of pure pit helmet wearing awesomeness), Yar's Revenge ( Ninja) and Kangaroo (it was like Donkey Kong, only you were a boxing Kangaroo trying to save your joey from poachers), the latter of which actually merited itself a sequel in recent years... unless that was just another hallucination brought on by prolonged exposure to stove cleaner and envelopes made with unusually toxic adhesives...

The weirdest titles I didn't learn about till later in life, when I found out that there were cartridges for not only Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween games, but a series of insanely crude adult games that were sold behind the counter of stores and came in leather cases. Atari: putting joysticks into adult hands 2 decades before Grand Theft Auto's "Hot Coffee"...

Absolute worst 2600 game? I'd have to go with Superman. I think I'm one of the .015% of gamers in the world who actually enjoyed the crap out of the E.T. game, but I think that's just because I was a stupid kid at the time who needed a pointless and nonsensical pile of pixels on a TV screen to keep me occupied while mommy and daddy did lines and yelled at each other... till they discovered weed was cheaper and didn't cause arguments. But, yeah, anyway, Superman was friggin' terrible. I remember just flying past the same ten screens (which varied by color of pixels... if even that at times) over and over again and not knowing what the hell it was I was trying to accomplish.

There was also a game based on 1959's The Alligator People, believe it or not.

My favs were BERSERK and YAR'S REVENGE!

They don't make games like that any more.   :bluesad:

I still have a 2600 hooked up at home.  LOL

My favorite would probably be Frogger.  I could play that game for hours on end.  I also still love Pong and Combat which has been mentioned earlier.

Now E.T. Has been mentioned, but does anyone else remember this:

http://www.journey-tribute.com/journey/resources/atari2600/ (http://www.journey-tribute.com/journey/resources/atari2600/)

I still actually have most of my Atari games.  I always seemed to get them from thrift stores and such, normally like 2-4 games for a buck.  They never came with the boxes nor the manuals so the games were extremely cryptic to me.  I still don't know what the hell Yar's Revenge was about.   :teddyr:

Yars Revenge was one of my more frequent played games.  Skaboi I think the plot line was a Yars was a creature who was working against an evil ruler or something.  Your job was to break down the barriers and blow them up.

Anubis, Im with you on Keystone Capers.  I used to play that  game until the shopping carts went too fast and took me out.

I visited that web site for the Journey game. Is it me or does the manager looks like the Kool Aid guy?

Anyone remember Mogul Maniac?  Its the one where you actually play on a foot pad.

Oh man, Oldskool, thanks for reminding me of Berserk. One of the coolest games ever because of the bouncing smiley face of unstoppable doom and carnage, heh heh. Awesome personal anecdote: I've got a Clerks shirt that's set up like a tour shirt for Olaf the Russian metal singer's imaginary group F*ck Your Yankee Blue Jeans and it says "Berserker" on the front with Olaf's pic. I went into a pizza place in my hometown a couple years ago and the girl behind the counter (amazingly cute girl, probably no older than 19 or 20) saw the shirt and said "That game was f*cking awesome". I just kinda looked at her confused and she said "Oh wait, I saw your shirt and I thought it said 'Berserk'." Every comment I get on that shirt has been girls singing the Berserker lines, but never have I had anyone bring up Berserk as a result. It's a cruel cosmic joke that I didn't get this shirt until after finding myself in a committed relationship...  :tongueout:

You're definitely not alone Dark. I saw the image before reading the words attached and thought you were making mention of the actual Kool-Aid Man game. That's just weird. The manager from the Journey game looking like Kool-Aid Man is almost as nonsensical as the A-Team game being about Mr. T's giant floating head zapping bad guys with eye beams... but only almost.

There was a foot pad for the 2600?! :buggedout:

Hahaha! YES! It's the only way you can get away with saying "Would you like to suck my c*ck" to a woman you just met without getting slapped in the face or arrested.  :teddyr:

Yes sir Inspector Gadget.  Actually it was called the Joyboard.  You stood on it in the Mogul Maniac game and controlled the skis.  Check out the link below.  Think Alpine Racer minus the cool graphics.  Check out the link below Anubis.

Not sure, I'll ask my brother next time I talk to him.  All I remember was it was a bit unsteady and easy to fall from if you weren't careful.

Has anyone heard of Dragonfire or Demon Attack?  Two more of my favorites.

Yep. Got them both around here somewhere.

Anyone remember how with Activision games, you could get a patch by reaching a certain score, taking a picture of the screen and mailing it in? I had a bunch of Activision games, but only managed to earn about half the patches for them. I need to break out the Atari and give Kaboom another shot...

I can't recall that Activision thing but on a side note, I have a PS1 game that has a huge Activision collection.  About 30 old school Atari games on one disc.  I may just break that out tonight.

I remember the patches.  I came into the Atari in the late 80s when it was starting to get decimated by the NES.  I had actually begged for an NES for Christmas but my parents couldn't afford one.  Instead I got an Atari sitting under the tree that year as it was considerably cheaper than the NES.  I ended up preferring it over the NES.  Every kid around here had a NES, but no one had an Atari.

Game companies don't do things like they used to.  A great example would be the patches like Shadow mentioned.  Anyone else remember the Atari catalogs where one could order any number of Atari branded merchandise.  Pens, backpacks, games, dinner plates, frisbees, etc.  I remember having a ton of those catalogs when I was a kid.

Loved Combat.  We used to play that for hours and hours.  Turn on the bouncy walls and then have at each other.  Warlords was another we played a lot.  Single player, I would go to town on Missile Command, Asteroids, and Adventure.  I hated that stupid freaking bat!

I remember Berzerk!  That game drove me nuts.  I think that I always had too much of an imagination and could just see my poor little character, screaming as a robot zapped him.  Wasn't there a killer smiley face, too?

There was a killer smiley face in Beserk and I think it appeared when you took too long trying to get through a stage.
