If anybody hasn't seen this gem of a cartoon, you have to.  It's both incredibly horrible, and at the same time, insanely good.  It was produced in 1990 by McDonalds, and aired on CBS, NBC, and ABC simultaneously.  George Bush, Sr, and Barbara Bush appear at the beginning. 

It is PSA that was produced telling kids not to do drugs, and features the top cartoon characters of the time, including characters from DuckTales, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Muppet Babies, Alvin and The Chipmunks, and Smurfs.  The video, in whole can't be found on YouTube.

I remember watching this when it first aired and being p**sed that the Ninja Turtles appearance consisted of the stupid blond Zach Morris wanna-be falling into the sewers and getting a brief anti-drug statement from Michaelangelo. I guess the other turtles didn't appear because they wanted to get paid or because specials against drug use violated their personal beliefs... This makes a great double feature with the Mr. T special "Be Somebody or Be Somebody's Fool", featuring raps written by none other than Ice T. Heh heh  :thumbup:

I've gotta see the Mr. T thing. 

This drug thing was dumb.  I mean, I'm sure there's dealers popping around school, but when I was like, 8, I hardly remember dealers showing up.  Not like 8 year olds have a bunch of money to throw around so they could buy some crack. 

I liked it though, partly cause it's horrible, and partly cause it had Kermit saying things like, "Don't smoke pot, yo." 

Mutant Turtles, Daffy Duck, and Muppet Babies all together in one show?

Like, man, what were they smokin'?

Now, for some real socially significant message-laden cartoon all-star spectaculars, look no farther than Yogi's Gang. They took on all sorts of un-PC villains with imaginative names like  "Mr. Pollution", "Mr. Smog", "Lotta Litter", and "Mr. Waste". As you can probably tell, Yogi and His Gang were definitely a left-leaning bunch. It was no coincidence ther adventures ended when Reagan took office.

That Yogi show sounded horrible as well.

They would call upon him with special rings, each with powers the kids themselves could use in a fight: Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart.  I felt bad for the kid with the Heart ring.  He's gettin whooped in a fight, and instead of having the cool ring that shoots fire, he has the heart ring.  He's hoping the guy will stop to pick up flowers or something.

Plus, Captain's weaknesses were Pollution, Radiation, Smog and Hatred.  One episode Hitler showed up and he was immediately rendered weak due to Hitler's mere prescence. 

What? That sounds like something out of SNL. BTW here's Cartoon All-Stars.

Yeah, Captain Planet was the opposite of what I'd call a bad-ass hero. 

I remember back in middle school or elementary school one of the two, they should one of these and it was about underage drinking.  Looking back at it, it so corny it was stupid. Because remember kids will learn to refrain from things if Daffy Duck tells them not do drugs or drink. 

One of my kids was watching this on YouTube the other day, thing was the one they were watching had been re-dubbed to endorse drugs and bad behavior. Not cool.

Needless to say I wasn't to happy and the wife snapped ... then we had to make that long speech about the internet and the things on it. So YouTube has been blocked on their computers for the time being, until we can see just what all they've been watching, we checked it for a form time to time and they never watched anything rude until yesterday, that we were aware of. I know 15 or 20 years ago I would have thought that was funny, now that I have kids it's not funny and you wonder what kind of moron would think it is funny, then you remember that you were that type of moron 20 years ago on in a different media.

So if you have kids you understand, if you don't you might think I'm an old fuddy-duddy stick in the mud.

I can't believe it's been redubbed to endorse drugs.  I'm still young, so it doesn't really bother me too much.  But I see where you're coming from, what with having kids of your own and all.

The original had a good message, but came off awkward and weird.  A 6 year old doesn't know what the hell pot is, let alone crack or 'the juice', as some of the cartoons were mentioning.

I could never stand to watch this "show".  At the time it came out, before I was nearly as cynical about the media and Hollywood as I am now, I just couldn't figure out how it got greenlighted.


Years ago I was channel-flipping when I caught a brief segment of one episode.  There was one of the kids with the rings doing something to a beached dolphin.  Some other kid wanted the first kid to do something, to which she replied along the lines of "...as soon as I'm done saving this whale!"  Now, I'm all for saving the whales (from hunting and extinction), but just what the heck was she actually doing to that poor creature?  My recollection may be wrong, but I don't recall her using the ring to push the whale back into the water; she just used it to create some sort of aura around the thing.  Even if she was pushing it back, does that necessarily mean the whale was saved?  I think maybe she was using the fundy definition of "to save" and she was proselytizing to it.


Well, if radiation is a weakness, he must have been perpetually weak.  We are constantly surrounded by radiation.  We even have special organs to detect it (i.e. eyeballs).   :wink:  Let's see what the Wikipedia article says.  Hmmm, "Captain Planet is often healed from the damage he sustains from pollution by absorbing solar energy."  So let me get this straight: radiation is one of his weaknesses, but he can heal himself by absorbing radiation?   :bouncegiggle:

Ah, the girl above was "Gi", who was Asian.  Asian?   :question:  So, she was from Siberia.  No?  How about India?  No?  Pakistan?  No?  Oh, she's one of them yellow-skinned slanty-eyed Asians.  No need distinguish if she was Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese etc...  "Gi tends to be the most scientifically informed of the Planeteers and is usually the authority on technology."  Nope, no stereotypes there.   :lookingup:  "... it was shown that she should have become an oceanographer if she did not join the planeteers."  So, instead of becoming a scientist she hangs out with a bunch of kids and a green weirdo in tights?  I thought the show was supposed to be about helping the Earth.   :bluesad:

P.S.  I'm sorry for the long rant, but man do I hate that show!

CAPTIAN PLANET was pure leftists propeganda from TED TURNER a socialists and pagan as well since it used the pagan deity of GAIA

I know you won't answer, but why do you sometimes post as Flu-Bird and sometimes as Giant Claw Jr.?  Not that you're doing anything wrong, it just seems odd.
