Title: Beef Jerky/Meat Snacks
Post by: Mr. DS on August 14, 2007, 11:19:29 AM
To clarify, I'm referring to stuff like regular jerky and stuff like Slim Jims.  I enjoy beef jerky occasionally and I find Jack's Links to be a pretty good one.  From the ingredients its surprisingly pretty good for you.

I like Jack Links Chicken Fajia Tender Cuts which are really awesome.

Luckily I have never tried these -- turns out the nitrites give me a whanging headache.

I love beef jerky.
Too bad it's so damn expensive.   :bluesad:

I buy that cheap Wal-Mart Great Value brand jerky.  It's like $3.00 for 4-5 ounces.

On the front of the package it says, "Tenderized with Bromelain."
And whenever I see that, I always picture Homer Simpson saying, "MMM...Bromelain"   :teddyr:

I also buy those big cans of Slim Jims that come with 24 snacks inside.
They have to be "mild" though.  I can't stand the spiciness of the hot ones.

I'll second both those sentiments. I could eat jerky all day. I used to get big plastic jars of it from Costco years back, but they stopped carrying that brand. I used to eat them and drink sparkling apple cider.

Beef Jerky was a lot cheaper when I was a kid.  I used to eat it all the time. I practically made meals out of it at times.

But I agree that now it's just too expensive. Sometimes if I'm at a gas station that stocks some high grade beef jerky, I'll pick up a couple but I don't eat it regularly anymore.

I love that stuff, good spicy meat - nothing like it!  My favorite is any kind of really tough jerky that you pretty much have to rip your teeth out to tear a hunk off.  It's half the fun.  They used to have some teriyaki beef jerky at the local gas station and I'd eat gobs of that stuff.

lawrey's used to make good beef jerky back in the 80's. Then someone changed their recipe and they suck. I used to eat slim jims but now they're too gooey and oily.  Oberto's makes good jerky but they're too damn pricey. you just can't win

I'd eat this stuff by the truckload if it wasn't so #$%$#%#$ expensive.

Beef jerky (known in South Africa as biltong) is also a local delicacy.

It comes in several types, namely

Biltong chips (hard pieces of jerky that seem to melt in your mouth)
Biltong powder (delicious on bread or toast)
Biltong pieces (this is best eaten with a sharp knife and not pre-cut)
You also get ostrich biltong, monkey biltong, donkey biltong and crocodile biltong.   :buggedout:

Also roadkill biltong, but I have never had the guts to try that.  :buggedout:

The best however is what we here call "droe wors" (dry sausage).  :buggedout: I know that sounds awfully gross. but don't gag: it is quite the most delicious snack ever, with spices added to the dried sausage it is heaven.

One drawback to eating this: a major thirst!  :drink:
