Title: The Prodigy (2004)
Post by: RapscallionJones on August 20, 2007, 12:01:57 PM
There was a lot of hype about this movie between Twitch Film and Film Threat.  Being a fan of the Twitch website, I figured they couldn't steer me wrong and the premise sounded very good:  From a young age, Truman Fisher has been tracked by a Keyser Soze style contract killer as a prospect for his own replacement.  Now as an adult and a mobster's henchman, Truman and the killer will cross paths while Truman looks for his boss' kidnapped nephew.

The early word was that it came out of nowhere and really worked like the surprise of Boondock Saints (which, incidentally, I don't really care for), but the idea was sound and I can sometimes rely on indie action movies to try something different.  Unfortunately, it doesn't always work and inconsistent is nearly an understatement.

I actually posted my thoughts on this in the "bad movies" section, which should suggest my overall thoughts a bit.

While on the whole I enjoyed the film (it sounds like a bit more than you did), I agree with just about everything in your entire review.  I even suggested the same amount of footage (about a half hour, especially that hopeless bit of Tarantino-riffing which comes out of no where) be cut from the middle.  I also thought the action scenes were very well handled, and I REALLY thought there should have been one more major set piece in the centre of the film.  Oh well.

So all in all, I guess great minds think alike huh?

Good review.
