Title: Mr. Bean
Post by: Mr. DS on August 23, 2007, 07:56:15 PM
I see that Mr. Bean is coming out with a new film.  I saw the original movie and thought it was ok.  Still doesn't beat the goofy classic skits such as...

I wasn't a big fan of the first movie.  But I loved the show.  I'd watch it every Sunday night on PBS.  Only reason I really even watched PBS at the time, save for Ghostwriter.

I have some Mr. Bean shows on videotape, but I wanna buy the dvd's.  I love the skit where he goes to the beach, and the one where he goes off the high dive at the pool, then loses his swim trunks.

Based off the previews, the new movie looks a bit more like the tv show.  I heard it's supposed to be Rowan's last run with Bean.  If so, it's sad, but good to go out now.  I wasn't big into the cartoon version, so I doubt they'd be able to come up with a lot of new stuff.

I do like Mr Bean, but I've always found a 90-minute+ film to be a step too far. Now a Blackadder film, that would pique my interest somewhat.

I loved the series set in medieval times, when he's hiding someone in his room.  To keep his mom from looking in the covered bed, the person starts bleating like a sheep -- apparently Blackadder had brought a sheep or two there before.

Mom's line "It's not the sheep, it's the lying" always cracks me up.

The problem (IMHO) is while you can maintain the Bean character over the life of a 30-minute television show, you can't maintain it over the life of a ninety-minute theatrical film. Though I do plan on seeing the latest Bean film, "Mr. Bean's Holiday."

I think the time problem also exists for sustaining the Blackadder character over the length of a theatrical film. Plus you would have to bring back Tony Robinson as Baldrick and Hugh Laurie. And with Hugh Laurie now involved with "House," I don't know whether he'd be interested in doing a full length Blackadder feature film.

One thing that piques me about "Mr. Bean's Holiday" is that it is rated G. It must have been years, since a live-action film was rated G.

Always more of a Blackadder than Mr. Bean fan. Bean can be cute in small doses, didn't care for the movie, and even a 30 minute episode of the show could get tedious. Guess I'd prefer it in short segments like the old Three Stooges shorts.

As for a Blackadder film, if Hugh Laurie wouldn't do it, and he threw me at first as House since I had mostly seen him in lots of British comedies (the perfect Bertie Wooster BTW)and Stuart Little, what about bring back Tim McInnerny? Stepehn Fry would be necessary also, IMO. Laurie could probably be worked around if enough of the others were there. Tony Robinson is a must though, Blackadder without Baldrick, you have nothing to work with.

Mr. Bean is awesome, i remember watching him on PBS every Saturday night as a kid and teenager, even repeats didn`t get tiring. My favs were when he was making his lunch in the park and when he went to the carnival, great eps. i too saw the 1st film and thought it could have been funnier.

i also remember Rowan in a kiddie movie called The Witches my sisters have, where he plays the hotel manager, could have used more of him in that film.

I could never get into the Bean character.
Give me Dave Allen, Benny Hill, Monty Python, or my personal favorite The Young Ones

My first exposure to Atkinson was when our NPR station used to play short comedy bits to pad out time between shows (wish they still did that). Lots of Brit comedy and Duck's Breath Mystery Theater type stuff (Mr. Science is one I remember).

Anyway, they use to play Atkinson doing a bit on stage as the Devil welcoming and sorting the new souls entering Hell. My favorite line was:

"Those of you who saw Monty Python's Life of Brian over there. No.....he can't take a joke."
