Title: Website changing servers/upgrade
Post by: Andrew on August 29, 2007, 07:11:23 PM
I intend to upgrade the VPS that hosts Badmovies.org in the near future.  At present, we are with a good host, but in their California datacenter.  Unfortunately, the one thing I dislike is that their main provider for connectivity is Cogent.  The host (Knownhost) also has a location in the Texas Colo4Dallas datacenter, which has Internap and Level3 for providers.

In the past few months, I've seen little blips here and there which appear to be caused by routing issues on Cogent's network.  Nothing that lasts very long, but five to ten minutes of packet loss maybe once every month or two.  Moving to the TX datacenter should be a good move, as the site should respond even faster and have better speed overall - not so much due to the server, but the quality of the network.

The result of the move could be a day of funky stuff as the Internet catches up with the change (the IP pools for CA and TX are different).

I am in the process of making this move happen.  Right now, the estimated timeline is that the website will actually switch over to the new server on Friday (31 August), probably that night.  Again, there could be a few burps as the Internet catches up with the change or if software/configuration needs tweaking on the new server.

Once the site is switched over, I have a plan to help everyone find it quickly.  However, if your network is still finding Badmovies.org on this old server, I will have the forum in maintenance mode - with a notification of the change.  My guess is that anyone shouldn't lose access to here for more than a day.  With the switch I plan, quite honestly, the burp should be minutes.
