I grew up in the 80's listening to all kinds of metal.  I actually had Slayer's "Show No Mercy" and Metallica's "Kill 'Em All" on vinyl back when they originally came out in 1983.  Growing up my entire bedroom was plastered with almost every single Iron Maiden poster that I could find in stores.

While I listened to a lot more true underground metal, I also dabbled into some of the more pop metal acts like Def Leppard, Dokken, Ratt and Cinderella.

I never was too much into death metal though I did like a few bands like Morbid Angel, Malevolent Creation, Death and old Deicide & Cannibal Corpse.

I would say that thrash metal is my favorite type of metal.  Bands like Megadeth, Exodus, Testament, Slayer, (old school) Metallica, (Belladona era) Anthrax.....stuff like that is still some of my favorite metal around.   I also love what's considered power metal (Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth).

My listening tastes have been extremely varied as I've gotten older and I listen to almost anything if it's truly good music.    Most new metal bores me as it all sounds the same.

I do however like some more modern metal acts like Lamb of God, Mastodon, Quo Vadis, Cryptopsy, Dimmu Borgir.

I played in a few bands in the 80's.  One with a level of success.
While I love that music, the stuff that gets me now is the 70's metal.  Uriah Heep's Steelin, Deep Purple's Highway Star, that kinda thing.
From the 80's...My favorites are anything by Manowar, Keel or something in that line.

Sabbath - "Paranoid" is one of my most favorite songs of all time.  Fun to play, too, but then so is "Fairies Wear Boots."  When I was in college, I worked in a ski resort handing out rental skis, and me and buddy of mine (an electrical engineering major) who also worked there rigged a tape player into the public address system.  I remember the night we played "Hand of Doom," complete with echoing off the mountains, and some older folks complained.   :teddyr:

Really, mostly it was a lot of fun.  One night it was "college night" and we had large groups up from Clemson - that night we had guys and gals coming in to say "thanks for playing such cool music - it's the only reason we did not leave."  Our playlist included Rush (the live version of "Closer to the Heart" on EXIT STAGE LEFT sounded great with the echoes), older BTO, Sabbath, etc.  Man that was a blast.

Speaking of Anthrax, do you remember the episode of "Married ... With Children" that had Anthrax?

I liked a lot of the 80's metal.  Some of it I still do - still listen to Iron Maiden with NUMBER OF THE BEAST being my favorite album; my 4 year old daughter will often sing "Run To The Hills," which is likely her all time most favorite song.  Some of the 80's metal I listened to I hesitate to admit now and it really turned into cookie cutter stuff there for a while.

My favorite King Diamond albums are Abigail and Them.

I also love the 1st 2 Mercyful Fate albums Melissa and Don't Break the Oath.

YES!!!  Karma to Torgo for knowing who Savatage is!!!

Their very 1st album Sirens is one of the unsung classics of power metal.    I like their 80's stuff the best.

It was a huge loss to the metal/music community when original guitarist Chris Oliva (who was brothers with singer John Oliva) died in a car wreck.

I grew up on metal. The first metal album I got was Maiden's Powerslave (on vinyl, natch) and I became a true Maiden freak up until they released Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, which I thought was awful at the time. I then got into thrash bands like Metal Church, Metallica, Living Death, Kreator, DRI, Prong, Sabbat, etc. When I got sick of thrash I moved onto death metal like Death's Leprosy album, Carcass, Godflesh (still one of my faves). On the metal side of things as of late I've been listening to a lot of grind (Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed), and DOOM (Paradise Lost, Trouble, The Obsessed). I've got a soft spot for the NWOBHM bands like Holocaust, Tank, classic metal like Canada's Sword, Scorpions, early Def Leppard.....I could go on and on.....
METAL FOR LIFE!

I thought it was kinda cool on a cheesy level for Paul O'Neil to incorporate the band into his pet project.  You might have heard of them...They're called Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
It was cool that they brought Chris's substitute Chris Caffery along with them too

Anybody remember The Sensational Alex Harvey Band?

Alex Harvey was not really metal, but certainly not "pop rock" either.   :teddyr:

"Vambo":

[youtube=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rg9FcXmwnYo

Their song "Tomahawk Kid" a GREAT tune based on RL Stevensons Treasure Island.  Harvey died in 1982, but the band still plays shows.  You can see a clip of this song on youtube, but I don't think it sounds near as good as the original.

On edit: "Vambo" was the first part of a larger piece called "Hot City Symphony" and I just realized the second part, "The Man in the Jar" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cutbD7Eb-Lo) also has a version on YouTube.   This song might appeal to the folks on this site, since it is a kind of 'film noir' set to music.

I personally love The Dungeons Are Calling. Infact. I'm gonna fire it up in iTunes right now.

I also grew up on all forms of 80's metal. I still have a lot of my old Vinyl. I listened to everything from glam metal to death metal. From the big label stuff to independent labels to trading demo tapes through mail. Damn, I wish I still had some of that stuff...like the original Blind Illusion demos or the old Hirax stuff (Bombs of Death). Ah, memories.

I have a Blind Illusion demo that I got on Ebay a while back.  That was the band that Ler was in when they were playing with Primus and how he started to hang with Les Claypool.

As for Possessed, that's too cool that you went to school with those guys.  Seven Churches is a personal favorite of mine. I also still have The eyes of Horror on cassette which was produced by Joe Satriani due to Ler taking some lessons from him back in the 80's.

I don't know if you heard about this but Possessed's leader Jeff Becerra was shot and paralyzed from the waist down during supposedly an attempted robbery back around 1989.  Some people said that it was a drug deal gone wrong but Jeff has said that it was some people attempting to mug him, he didn't give up his wallet or whatever so they shot him.

He's actually put a fake version of Possessed back together but he's the only original member. I believe that some band called Sadistic Intent is his backup band. I think, that he performs in a wheel chair.

I turned 32 this past March and all I listened to in the 80's was metal.   I got a lot into progressive rock during the tale end of the 80's and then I got really into funk and all other types of music at that point.

But Metal is still my favorite type of music overall.

Even though I'm not happy about being in my 30's  (I'm sure that the 40's will be worse  :teddyr: ), it still is awesome that most if not all of the metal bands that I loved growing up are still out there playing and performing/recording in some fashion.

I got to see Iron Maiden back on the 2005 Ozzfest and they still looked and sounded as good as when I saw them back in 1986 (though they have 3 guitarists now).

I was Slayer back in February in DC and they still put on one heck of a show.

I'm going to see Megadeth in October in Richmond, VA.    One great thing about veteran type acts is that you can pretty much guarantee a great show out of them.

I grew up on a metal diet and still intake a heavy dose of it.  Particular favs, Testament, Anthrax, Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Annihilator for thrash.  Death/Gore metal (as mentioned in another thread) Cannibal Corpse, Decide, Hypocrisy, Exhumed.  And yes a guilty pleasure of mine is the hair metal genre RATT, Winger, etc.

I used to be the metal director at my college radio station. Its amazing how many metal bands are still chugging along.  Helloween, Overkill, etc. Metal is something you either get or don't and luckily many of us get it here.

Now for your listening pleasure, a song about Children Of The Corn...
[youtube=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uixA1i34hOg

Side note, does any one listen to the new "stoner" and "doom" rock thats been out there in the past few years?  Stuff like Fu Manchu, Sheavy, Orange Goblin, The Sword, etc.

I grew up on metal.  These days my tastes run toward the avant (Sunn/Earth), nostalgic (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and black metal but when I was a kid and still to a degree to this day, I was addicted to the thrash.  DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, Cryptic Slaughter, Corrosion of Conformity.

One of my present favorites is Municipal Waste.  If you're not listening to them, you really need to do yourself a favor and pick up their albums Hazardous Mutation and The Art of Partying.  It's tight, it's fast and usually funny.

Also, if you haven't seen it, I can't recommend the documentary, Metal: A Headbanger's Journey nearly enough.  It's so good.

Side note, does any one listen to the new "stoner" and "doom" rock thats been out there in the past few years?  Stuff like Fu Manchu, Sheavy, Orange Goblin, The Sword, etc.
Oh yeah.  I'm a little picky about this stuff since a lot of it starts to blend and sound alike, but my big favorites are Sleep, High On Fire and Big Business.

The thing that I love so much about the metal genre is that it's one of the very few that has so many distinguishable sub-genres within it.

You have thrash, speed, death, grindcore, doom, power, black, hair to name some of the more prominent ones.

Growing up, I thought Twisted Sister were cool and bad-ass. Of course I was only 10-11 at the time. Still like them though. And Van Halen and Motley Crue.

Nowadays I find I tend to lean towards 70s metal: Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Nazareth, Alice Cooper.  Also loved Motorhead, Scorpions and some Bon Jovi. Seem to recall a Canadian band called Killer Dwarfs...wondering if I'm the only one who remembers them?

I really wanted to see Iron Maiden on their 12 date tour that they did late last year here in the US but they didn't come anywhere close to where I live.  Their most recent album A Matter of Life of Death was excellent.  Was it as great as their classic stuff from the 80's?  Well, no.  I wasn't expecting it to be. however, they still keep releasing pretty high quality music.

Oh yeah, some cool old school metal news.

Testament signed with Nuclear Blast records and they went into the studio at the end of August to beging recording their follow up to 1999's The Gathering  (which was fantastic BTW).

I think that they already had most of the songs written already for the new one so I'm hoping that it won't take too long get it released.

interesting., the first sabbath album I heard was Heaven and Hell, and it's stil probably my favourite. I didn't like ozzy osbournes voice at first but it has grown on me over time...

also I will say that I was never into death metal back when it kind of started, but recently some newer death metal acts have made albums that I think really push the envelope and are amazing.

Brodequin - Methods Of Execution (2004)
Human Mincer - Embryonized (2002)

these are incredible albums I would recommend these to everyone. death metal has definitely progressed from its kind of primitive beginings IMO

edit: one D/M band I do like from back a bit is Bolt Thrower, anyone heard of them?

I haven't heard from them in ages, but then again, my musical taste has changed dramatically in the past few years

Bolt Thrower's Warmaster is excellent. I wouldn't really call them death metal...more like war metal I guess.

I used to be friends with a guy that was a big Bolt Thrower fan. Can't say that I remember what they actually sounded like but the name rang a bell in my memory.

7) Queensryche

I'm glad to see Queensryche make the cut here.  I really liked them in the early 90's.  "Lady Wore Black" is an awesome song, imo.

And PS: Caught Megadeth a few years back at Oz Fest in Raleigh...they were one of the reasons I wanted to go that year.  Good show, if you have not seen them before.

Their best albums IMO are 1986's "Rage for Order", 1988's "Operation: Mindcrime" and 1990's "Empire".  They started to slip with 1994's Promised Land and pretty much didn't release anything decent again until the recent "Operation: Mindcrime 2".
But their earlier stuff is quite amazing.

Agreed.  "Rage for Order" and "Operation: Mindcrime" were the two I gave the most airplay.

I do still like "Lady Wore Black" and of course, they played "Suite Sister Mary" to death on Headbanger's Ball (good song, though...).

That Heathen video brought back memories.
I used to blast this album in my car when I was a teenager.

And speaking of Testament, I used to crank up this album every day.
Practice What You Preach totally kicks ass!

Another great metal band I used to listen to quite a bit was Forbidden.
(this album is darn near impossible to find)

As far as I know, they've broken up but they do have a Myspace page.
I'm not sure if the band runs it or it's a fan tribute page.

Anyway, this is my all-time favorite Forbidden song.
(I love the singer's voice)

I thought that Forbidden had regrouped a little while back but I could be wrong. Great and underrated band nonetheless.

I bought a couple of 'metal'-ish albums today,   picked up a 2CD anthology of Samson (Bruce Dickinson's first band) and Johnny The Fox by Thin Lizzy. havent listened to them yet. the only samson album Ive heard is Shock Tactics, which is very good IMO, and most of the Thin Lizy stuff Ive heard - ie the famous tunes - are good.

I used to listen to metal for a long time. Trash, some Death and a lot of Black. Right now sometimes I listen to some Necrophagia's records or trash legends as Slayer, Kreator or Sodom. I don't listen to Black Metal anymore, but only band that I recall as the best is beloved Polish Evilfeast. It's the only band (well, it's one man project) which knows what is BM to be about. Simple rhythm and a lot of melody makes you into some hypnosis. Listening to it's "Mysteries Of Nocturnal Forest" is great experience.

Right now I'm mainly into hardcore music but well made trashcore or crossover isn't bad. I recommend: SSS, Suicidal Tendencies, Municipal Waste (my top 3)

I recently went digging through my stuff and came up with these little gems on cassette:

I just wish I had something to listen to them on

RCMerchant - you might dig a band called EyeHateGod if you like Sabbath and Kyuss. EHG are a lot more extreme though, but man do they ROCK!

I'm stoked that I'm finally getting to see Megadeth live this Saturday October 6th.

Never have gotten a chance to see any prior lineups live but this current lineup that Dave Mustaine has is getting rave reviews.

Last time I saw Megadeth, they were in Washington, D.C. and Mustaine got plugged in the head with a beer can that someone snuck into the show.
Granted, it was after their set so it didn't really matter, but still...

As an aside, I've seen them I guess about 3 or 4 times and have never been disappointed.
