I know that I never met you or ever came close to meeting you, but I know that the last ten years since you passed on have been bleak years for me in one way or another.

Although you were undoubtedly one of the most beautiful women on God's green earth and I did have a crush on you, my reasons for loving you then as I still do in many ways were different. I saw that you had troubles which were very public and that, outwardly at least, you were handling them, giving of yourself to people who needed that sort of giving. My reaction to this was: her troubles are public and she is handling them. My troubles are private so why am I not handling mine?

You were thus an inspiration to me and continue to be so. You were and are missed, your beauty is frozen in time but what you meant and mean to me is not: the love is alive and warm. My unborn children will know your name, that is for sure.

Hamba khale (go well) my beautiful, fragile English Princess, sleep well and may you now know the perfect peace you so often craved.

Amen.  It's a true shame when such a person is taken from the world prematurely. Anyone who could stand up to such constant harassment and still manage to concentrate on the needs of others shows a strength of character that such as I can only imagine.

Let me be honest ... I don't get the fascination with the Royals or Princess Di. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with it. I just don't get it, that's all. I can't blame my be American on it, because I have a friend that has everything to Di for ... get it 'to DI for' ... hmmm oh well, anyway they have an entire room set up as a shrine ... it's really kind of spooky. Photos, dolls, videos, plates, cups, bobble heads, magazines, if Di is on it or in it they have it. Not dozens of items, but 100's and 100's of them.
I know I'm in the minority with my indifference ... but whats new about that?

Come to think of it, I have another friend that has an huge Elvis room and I don't get either, I like his songs and all but I don't have a shrine. I guess it's just me ...

And at least Elvis left records behind...

Diana grew from being just another royal in the public eye, charming as she was, to using her celebrity to expose and examine prejudices and injustices.  She was one of the first prominent persons actually photographed touching a person with HIV disease.  She travelled to less than posh spots like Angola and Bosnia to promote awareness of landmine injuries.   She makes the current crop of media-mad celebrities look like slobs. 

Now I loved John Lennon more than Elvis or Diana, but I'm not fanatical about any of them.  But, it is sad to know a rare enlightened person, privileged as she may have been, can no longer do her important work.

I've always looked at her as someone who got pulled into a world that was incompatible with the person she was.  Unlike the current crop of tabloid "stars" she turned her harassment by the paparazzi into a tool for bringing attention to a lot of good causes.


I don't idolize anyone dead or living, but I do recognize a decent achievement when I see one. 

Ok, I can get my brain around that. You respect her achievements in light of her plight. Well said.

(However, I still think my friend Liz's shrine room is a little creepy.)

Some people who know me well think that it is a little strange that I should like her, as the propaganda that infiltrated almost every facet of daily life in the then Rhodesia saw Britain as the enemy. That idiocy came to a halt in 1981 when she became the Princess of Wales and I really fell in love for the first time in my life.

I really thought, looking up to her as I did and do that we would grow old together, in a sense and that I would tell my children about her. That never happened, unfortunately and I am just left with a positive memory now. Her ability to put her personal hassles on one side and to help others, landmine victims, people living with HIV and others is what made me like her even more and has left a lasting impression on me.

I have a few books, videos and magazines about her, both for and against her: this gives me a well rounded viewpoint of an individual who was both flawed and fascinating at the same time. No more than that, just a memory, nothing more.

The one thing that I will never forget is hearing from my sister Maggi on this day ten years ago: she was crying and I asked her what was wrong. She said that she was very sad that Diana had died and I found this strange as I knew Maggi was not fond of Diana at all. Maggi said that her opinion on Diana hadn't changed, but that she felt she had lost someone that she knew.


She is missed, respected and loved, but I no longer mourn her, I give thanks for a life which influenced me positively.  :smile:

I read in a local magazine yesterday that a French reporter had unearthed an official hospital autopsy report on Princess Diana which stated that at the time of the crash, she was nine to ten weeks pregnant. The magazine has a copy of the report and it has been acknowledged as genuine.

That is just too sad. If this is true, four people, not three, died in that accident.  :bluesad:
