Title: Website Server Change Complete
Post by: Andrew on August 30, 2007, 11:18:06 PM
If you are seeing this, then you have successfully arrived at the new server.  Most networks should catch up with the change no later than the morning of 1 September, so I'm hoping that nobody is MIA for long.

It's about time.   :bouncegiggle:
You have no idea how bored I got last night waiting to get tired.

There is another way I could have done the move, which probably would have only resulted in only a few minutes of downtime, but I was leery of making any mistakes (I am rusty at this).  So, I opted to go the safe route of about 3.5 hours downtime and being more comfortable with doing it right.

Another thing was upgrading and doing performance tweaks.  I made some changes to the software on the backend of the forum (PHP, MySQL) that should improve performance.  In general, I aimed to balance the overall site's performance against the forum.

I stayed up for a while, running a number of tests on the new server.  Couldn't find any problems and the quality of the network service is definitely much higher.  The connection latency at the new data center seems to be half that of the old.

As always, please let me know if you encounter any weird errors or see something that is not working right.

Just flippin' ya a lil lip there boss man.  So far things are running well on my end.
I'm on another board that moved servers, encountered some problems and has been down for over a month now.  They should be coming back up tonight or tomorrow sometime though, so I feel and understand your caution.

I've been running some tests on this new server (well, VPS) and it is a beast.  The results are really nice; I'd say it is equal to a low-end dedicated server (but on the high side of low end).  The server has two AMD Opteron 2212 (dual core) processors, hard drives in RAID 10, and the site is always guaranteed 768MB RAM (burst to 2 GB).  With the upgraded hardware, the website's load dropped by about 30%.  If you combine that with the better network, the latency (the wait time for pages to be served) was cut in half and the download rate is almost double the old box.  And that is with the old box no longer under load and the new server under load; I mean I tested them tonight and found that was the case.

With the performance tweaks, we should be good on this server for the next year - I'm guessing based on growth.  If the site grows how I think it will, I have a plan that will cause minimal impact.  Mostly, if I need RAM, I can just tack on more RAM to the package.  If bandwidth is the issue, the likely culprit will be the video files and I'll add another VPS to be the video file server.

Anyway, let me know if you run into stuff - good or bad.  I'll be running a few more tests over the next few days, as time permits.
