Title: Movie Posters
Post by: RCMerchant on September 21, 2007, 08:44:40 PM
I believe this has been done before...but I thought it would be fun again...any favorite movie posters?
 Here's a few I like a lot...for various reasons...

This one is just so weird ...its almost like a 'Count Yorga hat rack" or something!

Here it looks like Kong is giving the "Touch of Life" to another Kong...!

   this one just looks cool!

man, I need me a Count Yorga hat rack now...

I went on a binge buying up Thai movie posters last year. I always love how colorful and original they are. I have ones for Evil Dead 2, Terror of MechaGodzilla and Ebirah, Monster of the Deep up in our living room. Sadly I couldn't find any images of them online, but here are similar posters for Invasion of the Astro-Monster and the original Evil Dead.

I really want to buy more old-school interesting posters...  I was trawling through old exploitation type posters a while back and saw some interesting ones. [gotta love that Evils of the Night poster RC!  That's more like what I need]

The oldest I have is probably:

Though I do have a Fear and Loathing Poster, Evil Dead, Fight Club and a Kill Bill one I can't find a picture of.  They're all pretty generic and the result of a movie poster sale at uni one week...

I,unfourtantly, don't have any cool posters. If I did, I wouldn't have any place to hang them any way. My wife paints...she works in oils...(dam good too!0 She does beautiful work...kinda like if Van Gogh mixed with fantasy. So We have her stuff framed all over the house. I don't dare hang my artwork...too R-rated and insane.

   The posters I showed are ones I like...but ,unfourtantly...don 't own.  :bluesad:

I like this one ...really psychadelic...

This looks like a real low budget oddity...!

A German  poster...WHAT does Frankenstein have to do with Japense monsters?!?!

I want to buy more movie posters but I have only a small amount of space to hang them.  My wife demands that I only hang them in my home office, so I only have a few.

I have ones for Sin City, Fight Club and The Killer with the latter being my favorite:

Kind of a small image, and it certainly doesn't do it justice.  The one that I have is an original and it is in pristine condition.  What I love best about it is that it contains the best scenes from the film and is expertly drawn.  The art looks almost like a painting and is extremely detailed.

Otherwise, here are some of my favorites:

Daughters Of Darkness (Great flick!):

Evil Dead 2:

Dawn Of The Dead:

What is it about foreign posters that make them so much better than our domestic ones?

On a somewhat related note, has anyone ever seen any Polish movie posters?  They never quite match the films they are advertising.  Here are a few...

Marathon Man:

Weekend At Bernies:

The Shining:

Raiders Of The Lost Ark:

WTF!?

WOW. I LOVE the Polish SHINING poster!!! Why is it that nowadays, all American posters are so ...lame? No original art...just cheezy air brushed photos?

Haha, I didn't realized that Thing had a decorative cat head he liked to put on for special occasion Burg!

Awesome Hell House poster btw.

As for Suspiria, I picked up an original Italian theatrical daybill for the little lady's birthday a few years ago. The poster itself was about $60, but I paid another $100 to have it restored and put on a linen back, and another $40 for a custom frame to fit it properly.  It was worth it, though now I know I'll probably never be able to top it for future birthdays. It looks similar to the DVD art used for the new Blue Underground DVD release:

I'd like to do the same for this awesome Ghidrah original I picked up a couple years ago, but not till I've got the extra cash to invest in getting it put on a linen back and custom framed as well. It's very much like this one, only the one I have is a bit longer.

I think my favorite piece right now (not including the ridiculously tall 6ft French posters I have that will likely never be framed due to their height) is the original print Re-Animator poster hanging over our entertainment center. The one that the art for the most recent DVD release was based on. Beautiful, heh heh.

This one is an ad for Universal's the INVISABLE MAN...yet note the star...Boris Karloff! This was before Karloff turned done the role...and of course, made Claude Rains a star.

Skaboi will appreciate this one:

You just gotta love that tagline.

How about this French poster for The Blob?

Quoting from my review:

Now there is a great big huge WTF if ever I saw one. Look at that thing! Steve McQueen looks like he just joined the freakin’ WWE!! I sure as hell don’t remember his shirt getting ripped to shreds like that! Was there a cut scene where he wrestled a bear that I somehow missed? And just who in the hell is that chick with him? That ain’t Aneta Corsaut! And there sure as hell wasn’t any female in this movie that showed that much cleavage or that much leg…I know, I looked! Another thing…what the hell is going on behind him? I don’t see any Blob. In fact, I see no monsters of any kind. I do see what looks like lots of people running around in a panic, cars crashing and something flying in the sky...though for the life in me I cannot recall a sequence involving a helicopter. And what are those long white things…laser beams or searchlights? It looks like goddamn Armageddon is unfolding behind him in that poster! Either that or Godzilla is fending off a maser attack in down town Tokyo. Can you just imagine the colossal disappointment experienced by anyone who went to see the film based on that poster? Here they were probably expecting some apocalyptic flick about global anarchy and they get teens and Jell-O instead! Planetary Danger my ass. No wonder the French don’t like us.

Shadow,

I'm guessing it was The Mutilator poster?  Karma for that.  It's sad that Impawards doesn't allow linking to their photos.

Love the Blob poster.  They are completely overselling the film in the poster.

I really need to get around to calling Buddy Cooper and see about doing an interview with him.  If I'm lucky, Andrew might want to post the interview here on the site as he reviewed The Mutilator.  Even if not, I want to do an interview for my own curiosity.

He's a local and dropped out of the business after The Mutilator.  I'd love to get some input about the film and maybe an anecdote or two about the filming.

Shadow- If I'm not mistaken...the BLOB poster is a re-issue of the 50's film in France during the 80's...which kinda explains the modern look of it...but not the blantant overselling and B.S.! I think I would be totally p**sed going in to  see a Steve McQueen action flik...and seeing that old chestnut- the BLOB!!!!

  Good stuff!!! Karma!

Darksider-About the SKULLDUGGERY video box; I noticed Video Treasures always has box art that almost NEVER have a dam thing to do with the actual film...I have a BLOODFREAK tape from them-(Picture of an old castle...and the head of a woman screaming looming over it) with the blurb-"He's a Dracula on Drugs!" No mention on the box or picture on the back,of a paper mache turkey  head! Oh well...That's Expliotation!

Yeah I know what you're saying.  The poster makes it seem like a sword and sorcery film but its really an oddball film about role playing.  I actually found that film at this out of the way shop in NH for like 5 bucks.  Complete with plastic cover!

Those Death Stalker posters are great, but aren't they just regular old Boris Vallejo paintings with the DS name tacked on?

Poster for Luigi Cozzi's 1977 colorized and re-edited surround sound re-release of GODZILLA:

I sadly lost the auction for this one on eBay a couple of years ago - $150 was just more than I could pay for it at the time and I've never seen this poster again, be it on sale, through scans, or otherwise.

Next is something I do have, a lovely flyer for the double billing of the 1977 Toei films LEGEND OF DINOSAURS AND MONSTER BIRDS and the rather rare comic book adaptation DOKEBAN:

I just find the contrast in subject matter to be quite hysterical - I have a one sheet poster of the double billing that's a bit more impressive but no scans of it.

Kindest regards,

Kevin P.
