Title: What superhero comic would you like to see get the movie/series treatment?
Post by: Kester Pelagius on September 23, 2007, 11:02:33 AM
There's two things Hollywood loves: remakes and "re-envisioned" adaptations of popular properties.  With the recent popularity surrounding TV series like Heroes (yet another regurgitation o the X-Men/mutant theme), Smallville (it's amazing how many different takes on Superman Hollywood can come up with), and, of course, big screen hits like Spiderman and Fantastic Four it got me wondering. .

What's Hollywood's next blockbuster superhero movie going to be?

Personally I'm tired of retreads.  Sure  Robotech (http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-qzcELew6frWBZspks_7SsnUuv9VNTUA-?cq=1&p=275), Buck Rogers (http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-qzcELew6frWBZspks_7SsnUuv9VNTUA-?cq=1&p=281), and Kung Fu's mysterious wandering Shaolin monk, Cane, may be coming to a theatre one day soon.   But there are dozens (http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-qzcELew6frWBZspks_7SsnUuv9VNTUA-?cq=1&p=270), if not hundreds, of commercially viable comic book titles and superhero characters that Hollywood could make movies or series about that haven't had series or movies made yet.  Seems a bit ridiculous keep remaking the same handful of properties over and over again when there's so much potential out there.

So, if you could chose ANY comic book superhero to be turned into a movie or television series what would it be?  And which format do you think the character would be better served by, movies or a cable/TV series?

I'll start.

My pick, purely because it's NOT the sort of thing Hollywood, with it's politically correct albatross hanging around it's neck, would normally consider is Kekko Kamen (http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-qzcELew6frWBZspks_7SsnUuv9VNTUA-?cq=1&p=283) (AKA Kekko Mask).  If you've never heard of her just click the link and scan down the page to the "links of interest".  In short she's a Japanese super heroine, some say a parody, others can't get over the fact her costume is red boots, a red scarf, red gloves, a red face mask with floppy bunny-like ears and. . .

NOTHING ELSE!

 :buggedout:   :teddyr:

Get your minds out of the gutter. She's not that kind of super heroine!

Actually there's great potential in this super heroine parody for dark comedy and biting social satire, or just plain silliness.  There's also a undercurrent of feminist subtext.  While I'd love to see this get the big budget movie treatment I know it's probably better suited to being turned into a cable series, probably on HBO or Cinemax.

Which superhero character would you choose?

Blue Beetle. I've always liked the character.  Maybe a little too much like Batman though.

I'd like to see the Jack of Hearts, but I seriously doubt he had the following to justify it.

For a very brief, and slightly goofed up story, try this

As a kid I liked Marvel's SLEEPWALKER comic. A hero who exists in the world of dreams and battles nightmares. It had a cool concept even though they always insisted on bringing other characters into the stories.  Liked DEATHLOK too although he was largely a lot like ROBOCOP.

This might be obvious, but a series based on Wolverine's life time.

I think Will Eiser's the SPIRIT...for TV,as long as they kept in the 40's-early 50's time frame...and got someone good like Sam Raimi to direct. I can picture Bruce Campell in the title role! He has the right sense of humor for the charecter.

Well, this goes back a few years but I always thought the original Longshot limited series would make a cool, offbeat action film, plus it could be turned into a series if successful. Probably with some major changes though since I don't think came out well for Longshot back in his world after his time in the X-Men.

Need to look that up, for my own curiosity.

Devil Dinosaur.  Come on, just 90 minutes (or so) of a huge red Tyrannosaurus Rex stomping on things and fighting with other dinosaurs, along with monkey men battling it out.

In the same vein as Andrew:  If the comic-book movie trend fizzles before I get to see a big-screen version of KAMANDI, I shall be severely put out.

Groo the Wanderer - perfect for an animated project of some sort. Oh wait! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groo_%28film%29)

Hm... Well, I'm hoping that when the Spider-man movie series runs out, eventually we'll get to see some Spider-girl movies. (Of course, for that to happen, Peter Parker and Mary Jane will have to get busy with each other already; three movies, and the two still haven't tied the knot. What's taking 'em so long? Grrr!)

I have thought that perhaps a... different perspective would be in order, though. It's too bad the Catwoman movie wasn't about Selina Kyle, because it's going to take a long time for DC to live that stinkfest down. A genuine Catwoman movie showing Selina Kyle getting into hot water with both Batman and the Gotham rogues' gallery and having to find some way out could have been a real blockbuster. Since she's out of commission for the time being, however, I do suggest one viable alternative:

In the Harley Quinn comics, there were a lot of fun stories dealing with the darker side of the cape-and-costume racket, such as the hiring process for henchmen (which involves weeding out a lot of cranks and wannabes), trouble with bounty hunters (few of whom are all that ethical themselves), and what motivates all the costumed capers of the villains and their henchmen (fun and profit mainly, though Harley Quinn was more focused on the fun and her henchmen were more focused on profit).

I suppose a live action movie of this gal might be worth doing someday, but I'd prefer an animated flick in the style of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.

If you insist on all comic book movies being about superheros, well, there is one with a better sense of humor than most:

While we don't really need any returns to the days of the campy 1960s Batman, it seems to me a little more actual superheroic comedy might be in order after all the grim, noirish stuff we've seen lately. She-Hulk always had a somewhat friendlier perspective on the whole big-and-green thing than her cousin Bruce Banner (from whom she got the blood transfusion that made her what she is).

I've also thought a superhero tale told from the perspective of the non-super-powered would make a great movie if companies could only get over all the licensing issues involved. I'd like to see a movie about Phil Sheldon of Marvels, for instance:

The story of how people who actually have to live in a universe full of genuine super-powered people react to it could be a kind of reversed-perspective version of The Incredibles, which did an incredibly good job of paying homage to the Watchmen comics without including so much of their gut-wrenching cruelty. A similar movie about why ordinary people don't get along so well with their super-powered fellow residents might be in order, though; maybe even set in the same world as in that Pixar movie. Hmmm... The Unincredibles, perhaps?

I know there was already a series, but I would like to see a Savage Dragon movie. And maybe a movie with either New Warriors or The Slingers (the alter egoes of Spider-Man).  And also a Young Avengers tv series.

Groo is a good choice.  Probably have to be an animated movie or series though as I'm not sure Hollywood will do it justice otherwise.  I mean, look at what they did with Tank Girl, Barb Wire, and Howard the Duck!

Actually, given the cult popularity of She-Hulk, especially amongst the key movie going demographic of young males, I have always wondered why they never did a She-Hulk movie.  That said. .

Your comic super hero(ine) doesn't have to be a super hero with kewl mutant powers.  There are quite a few "super hero" comics whose characters weren't bitten by radioactive spiders or gained powerz from mysterious cosmic radiation.  But Hollywood seems to think those kinds of movies are easier to make money off of than, say, these sci-fi themed comics (http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-qzcELew6frWBZspks_7SsnUuv9VNTUA-?cq=1&p=270) I posted about in my blog or the, now out of vogue, mysterious occult comic heroes.

So, if not some kewl kosmic mutant with super powerz what comic character would you like to see get the big (or small) screen treatment?

I wish they would do a live action of The Maxx. It was a very odd comic and I thought the tv show adaptation was pretty good. I think it would be wild to see how it would turn out on the big screen!

I got the movie and the actor for this: Ving Rhames as Luke Cage (or Power Man)

Blackangel, Luke Cage movie is in motion.  Pre-production.

There's been on and off talk about a Watchmen movie for a while now, which would be interesting, but I don't really care for it one way or another.  Watchmen Film WIKI page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watchmen_%28film%29)

For years I said V for Vendetta would be a good one, and got my wish [and it was good too!  ]

Mentioned in another thread was Preacher, which would make for a much better series than a movie, is still something I want to see in film/tv format.

The Maxx was a great series, but I don't really need to have a movie.

There's so many to adapt that would be just great for filmic interpretation.  I'll have to compile a shortlist  :teddyr:

When I said live action I meant with REAL people. Costumes and such. I know if the MTV adaption. I referred to it when I posted.

I would like to see another Spawn as well. I was a little disappointed with the last. And since, anymore, its alright to remake a movie that you weren't satisfied with (the Hulk) I don't see why they can't do it with this one.

I loved Sgt. Fury as a kid.  He always managed to get his shirt ripped to pieces  while laying  down fire with a Tommy gun in each hand.

If done right, JONAH HEX's mix of Western and Sci-Fi/Horror weirdness could be very, very cool.

And speaking of War comics, why not do a movie based on BLACKHAWK?

Cool! :buggedout: I actually didn't know that. Don't know how that one slipped past me. Still a new movie based on it could be cool I feel but I'm probably dreaming, they'd ever do period stuff nowadays.

How about a movie series based on INFINITE CRISIS? Or Crisis On Infinite Earths, I just like the name INFINITE CRISIS a little better. That would make such a great excuse. I'd love to, but I'm having an INFINITE CRISIS right now.

After that one episode of Batman:TAS I thought Jonah Hex would make a great spinoff animated western/steampunk action series. Certainly better than Wild Wild West or LOEG, since Hollywood can't seem to do live action steampunk worth a damn.

I don't if it was mentioned in that other thread or not, but this is coming to HBO as a series some time in 2008...or so rumors say.
