Title: Support Your Local Gunfighter (1971)
Post by: Scott on September 26, 2007, 08:12:20 AM
SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL GUNFIGHTER (1971) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0067809/) - Here's another Western I really enjoyed recently. James Garner and Jack Elam star in this comedy Western about a Easterner trying to get by in the West. He bumps into Jack Elam and they kinda become partners as Elam is talked into impersonating a legendary gunfighter. Elam is exceptionally funny in this film, so if your a fan of his you have to see this film. Chuck Conners also makes an appearance at the end as the real gunfighter Swifty Morgan. The Western town set was done on a grand scale.

  (8 out of 10 Stars) As a comedy Western better than the Trinity films, not counting MY NAME IS NOBODY of course.

This is sort of a sequel to Support Your Local Sheriff (1969)  (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065051/l). Same director and mostly the same actors.  I think Sheriff is probably the better of the two.

I hear you TrekGeezer. A couple years ago I started watching SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHERIFF, but didn't get the chance to finish it. Will keep a look out for it.

I enjoy both movies, but like you prefer Sheriff over Gunfighter.

When I first saw these movies on network TV when I was a little kid, I was greatly confused by their overall similarity.  I just didn't realize that they were two separate movies, and I thought that I kept misremembering them.  It wasn't until years later that I realized they were in fact two movies.

Now that I think of it, the same thing occurred with Destry (1954) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046906/) and Destry Rides Again (1939) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031225/) to me.  (Of course, the Destry movies were both remakes of the same story, so it is understandable to confuse them.)

I prefer Sheriff to Gunfighter also, but both are fun comedies that hold up to repeat viewing.

The interplay of Garner and Elam is excellent, and the large casts of familiar faces in both films make for some good laughs. I think I give the first film the edge for having Bruce Dern and Walter Brennan in top comedic form.

Jack Elam is one of my favorite character actors.  Hard to believe he started out as an accountant.
