Title: Master of the Flying Guillotine
Post by: Andrew on September 28, 2007, 01:59:12 PM
Cooperative effort with the KO Picture Show.  A blind, old, and crazy monk is the most dangerous assassin alive, but the One-Armed Boxer is determined to stop him once and for all.  The only problem is the monk's deadly weapon: the flying guillotine.

Rob over at the KO Picture Show (http://www.kopictureshow.com/) reviewed the first movie in this series, "One-Armed Boxer."

Man, I love this movie!  I need to get the newer 2 disc DVD of it that has the remastered anamoprhic widescreen transfer. I have the older 2 disc special edition which while good still had problems in the visual department in addition to not be anamorphic widescreen.

But this movie is great fun.  I love springing this one on friends of mine who have thought that they've seen it all.

I just recently watched this film for the very first time (it was a disc I bought cheap from Andrew) and loved it! It was great. Now, I'm gonna have to invest in that new edition, as well.

Yeah this one has been on my wishlist for a while. I saw it on the HD Kung-Fu channel at my girlfriend's house earlier this year. It was so crazy that even Tara couldn't stop watching it. Great joint effort you guys!  :teddyr:

I remember seeing the preview for this on a tape with all kinds of random Kung-Fu junk.  I also remember seeing this preview for one film called "Duel of The Iron Fist" which had some guy shouting "You diiiiiiiieeeeee!" before everyone got into this big mess of a fighting scene.

Anyway, the preview for Flying Guillotine is the one I always remembered the most.  I'm glad to hear it's as good as it looked in the preview, so I'll have to check it out now.

One of the greats.  If you liked this, Wang Yu (the star and director of Master of the Flying Guillotine)'s other films are worth looking into..  None of them are quite as outlandish as Master, but he's in a number of very good films..  Both One-Armed Swordsman films, the two Chinese Boxer films and a number of others.

Yes.  Long before it was used by the Nazi's, the symbol was considered a good luck charm and saw use in both Hinduism and Buddhism.  It is not out of place for the evil monk to be wearing it (and you should see it crop up here and there in other martial arts flicks), but I think that they probably added that to the costume to hint at his diabolical nature.

just one of the greatest martial arts movies of all time.  highly recommended.

the swastika isn't used to show he's "evil" but to show he's a monk.  that sign shows up in lots of places still in Asia, and doesn't have the stigma it does over here, due to idiots using it to spread hatred (when the opposite is the real meaning).

I cannot help but think that, just perhaps, it was included on his clothing since Western audiences would associate the symbol with evil.  You are definitely correct that it is not viewed the same in Asia, however I can also say that quite a few people in Japan and Korea do carefully consider it, because they understand its significance as a symbol perverted by the Nazis.

This movie is a classic!! i love it. I wish I had extendo-arms like the one character. not to mention, anytime there is a chicken blown up in a movie, i'm all for it. But then again, i never got far in Fable, i was too distracted by kicking chickens in the first part..

By the time of the tournament, the campy/cheesey comedy of it really takes a back seat to genuine awe at the quality of correography in this movie.

And again I ask myself why I don't watch these things more often :bouncegiggle:

Seriously, it was so easy to take this ridiculous movie seriously.

I am afraid that was a mistake on my part.  "Nice Jumping" should have appeared as a quote.  I've corrected the issue now.  In all honesty, to appreciate "Nice jumping." you just have to see that scene (and part of the movie a bit earlier).  It is funny - makes me laugh every time.

It seems like just a few years back this film was on either FLIX or the Movie Channel seemingly every other day. Man, I miss that.

The main theme music to this always sounded like someone had taken a Black Sabbath album and slowed it to half speed.  Knowing the general Chinese regard for international copyright law I wouldn't be surprised.  Some day I'll rip that music and speed it up and find out what it is!

It's called System16.  Some German band made it, there are other "system" songs that are sped up/slowed down to different degrees.  And yeah, from everything I've gathered, it was unlicensed.  Master of the Flying Guillotine is Taiwanese in origin, which ignores copyright even more flagrantly than Hong Kong.

I want to say that the soundtrack has some stuff from Neu! (the song you are referencing), Tangerine Dream, and Kraftwerk...all unlicensed of course.

Is the Japanese character the same guy who plays Evil Betty in Kung Pow: Enter the Fist?  I think he is.  I also think the guy who play Wimp Low is in this movie as well.

Ah, good times, good times.

I would guess so.  It's worth noting that the film Kung Pow is based on stars Jimmy Wang Yu (star and director of MOTFG), they show a brief clip of him in the end credits.

Thanks for posting this review, one of my all time favorite Kung Fu movies, love the soundtrack and am using some audio clips for overdubbing a fun little video.

Cheers

One other thing I learned from watching this movie is that once you decide to leave your house for more than a week don't run the risk of having it burgled, simply exit through the wicker roof and then burn it to the ground instead.

I liked this movie, but the charm wore off really quick after the tournament scene.

Probably my second favorite martial arts film after ENTER THE DRAGON. Yeah, it's that good.

One comment: the Indian character looks like he's played by a Chinese actor with his skin darkened. It's like the Taiwanese version of blackface. Bengaliface?

The Thai character really looks Thai, though. I wonder if his ridiculous pre-fight dancing was meant to mock Thai culture, or was just a character quirk? These 70s Taiwanese and Chinese kung fu movies can be racist at times, especially against the Japanese.

Neither.  They really do that, though the exact moves may be exaggerated or not really accurate.  Friend of mine lived in Thailand, and said they did this before every Muay Thai match he watched.
