Title: Site Layout Updated
Post by: Andrew on October 27, 2007, 09:22:40 AM
Well, it has probably been about six or seven years since I last updated the site's overall layout.  I had been working on another update for a while, but finally buckled down and got it down over the last week.  Over the next month or two, time allowing, I will be fully integrating the new layout.  The movie reviews should be good to go.  Please let me know if you find anything weird.

Along with this, I am working on testing new layout templates for the forum.  The change should be a minor one, as I'm not changing the software that runs the forum, just the theme that displays that content.  The goal is something less graphics intensive, because this one has about fifty little images.  Some other templates cut that in half and are more compact code.

I noticed the orange tint recently to the left hand side and the newest layout looks good. By the way I haven't had the chance to mention how good the three reviews you usually have on the front page look. The choices have been interesting.

Great new look to the site! This is always one of my first and most favored stops during my daily surf. Keep up the good work. Hope all is well on your end.

I love the new layout Andrew.  The main page looks fantastic as do the reviews.

Good job!

Oh thank god, I thought there was something seriously wrong with my computer.

Thanks all, I was hoping that the greenish tinge would "feel" more like home.  I have updated the forum's theme too, and definitely need some feedback on that.  I'm worried that the text might be a little on the small side.  I can fix that in the configuration if most of us feel the same way.

Actually, I went in and bumped some of the text sizes.

love the green - just like the old days. The only thing is I was just getting used to the icons, i usually sort my messages by "show unread since last visit" and i like to first open the ones i've posted on. The icons showing this are different so it's going to take time to get used to

other than that - like it very much  :teddyr:

For me, everything is smaller and shoved to the left, with a full quarter of the right side devoted to links and advertisements under a column "Ads by Google".

ahh, that's the great thing about having my resolution set to 800x600

LOL

i see no ads from google without scrolling ;-)

I agree about the text size.
It does seem a little on the small side and the font is so-so.
I'm talking about the text around our avatars.
The text that we see here in the threads looks to be the same as we've been using.

I'm also glad to see those ugly red and yellow buttons go.  I won't miss them.

Other than that...looks good!

Kinda gets rid of the simple charm of the layout, but I could definitely get used to it! Very easy on the eyes if a bit overwhelming at first. :bouncegiggle: The new "new posts" buttons are clever! But whats up with orange for random acts of violence in the reviews?

I'm trying to come up with a better color than that.  Unfortunately, red doesn't look right on the green.  That is going to take some playing with.

For me, everything is smaller and shoved to the left, with a full quarter of the right side devoted to links and advertisements under a column "Ads by Google".

That's the bracketing in with the overall two-column design.  As Susan noted, if you are browsing at 800 by 600, the design does shove the ads off the page before content (and that was intentional).

Overall I really like the new look, but I'm having trouble getting used to the forums.  I feel like I have to lean to the left to view everything.

Hmm, I'll see what I can figure out about the hatred of the right column.  Not much probably, but maybe I can come up with something.

I've done a lot of customization to the theme that has become the forum, and I do mean a lot.  If you run into anything weird, by all means post it in this thread or the trouble tickets.  I'm bound to have missed something.

At the risk of sounding like Tony the Tiger, I think everything looks great! Makes me want to work on my own site's look. Too bad I know nothing about how to do it.

 The layout looks great, Andrew.

I echo what Khaz said: I thought there was perhaps something wrong with my PC and I even posted in the Trouble Tickets part of the site.  :buggedout:

Sorry: me shall delete that one right now.

I like the layout, and just in time for Halloween.  The right side column doesn't bother me, I can deal with a bit of advertising to help out the site.

The font for the main posts has not changed.  I placed it right back at verdana, 10pt - like it has been.  Do you mean the smaller font used for the descriptions and names?

how come some of the profiles pics have scrollbars?

You are at 800 by 600, right?  I was able to replicate that at the resolution.  I changed the code and it appears to have solved that problem.

You see what happens when I go away on vacation. Andrew changes the layout, while I'm gone. I don't know whether that means I should take more vacations or fewer vacations. What matters to me is this forum and the posters who post to it, as long as they remain the same, the layout doesn't matter that much to me.

thanks andrew, that was kinda weird..lol

btw probably one of the last people on the net who use 800x600. I can't help it, i just like my stuff big ;-)

I have noticed that on my home comp using Firefox, the page goes a little strange every now and then. The text in posts dosen't wrap and I have to scroll left. Using IE at work this never happens.. Wierd. Anyone else using Firefox notice this? I ask due to the fact that my vid card fan went recently and I had to rebuild and modify it.

You know, the font doesn't bother me that much today.  I do find some of the headers and whatnot uncomfortable.  The yellow on th buttos is just a BIT off from teh green, but don't do anything on my account.

I did tweak some of the colors yesterday, including making taking the brighter green out as a background color.  Perhaps that is the change that helped?  Me matching up colors is always a pain, because I have a tiny smidgen of color blindness and it affects blues and greens.

Just thought I'd let you guys know that if you want to revert to the old look, just go into your profile options and select Look and Layout Preferences.
Once there, the option to change the current theme should be right at the top.

It's called Helios_Multi.

Graying text once clicked on was a noble intention, but aesthetically it's awful!

That was the site css template taking over from the forum one.  I made a change that should have fixed that.

You mean it is invisible to you, as in collapsed or something?

No I just meant I liked it better when you could go ahead and login once you got to the forum without clicking any more buttons. I'm nitpicking I know.

I understand what you mean now.  I will have to look into adapting that, so it will go on my "to do" list.

I have been working in the background all night and just published some changes that I was doing lots of testing and error checking on.  In general, if you check the bottom of a review you should now see a listing of the comments from that review.  That was the biggest change, though I had a few other tweaks that went into effect.  As always, please let me know if you find anything weird.
