Title: 1408 (2007)
Post by: Scott on October 28, 2007, 09:21:55 AM
1408 (2007) - Watched this film last night. It's really good up to the point were the writer throws the chair into the wall and the wall bleeds and then his family comes on the TV screen showing his past or something then I kinda lost interest. It had good atmosphere during the first half then lost it. I was really into the whole writer being a non-believer staying overnight in haunted hotels and later meeting the hotel manager played by Samuel Jackson.

(7 Out Of 10 Stars)    Almost.....................

I am with you on this one Scott. It started out awesome, then just kinda went all pear-shaped around the last 3rd of the movie. Almost like they were starting a new movie halfway thru. I would have given this a 5.5 to 6 tops.

I'm trying to be kind ratings wise with the newer films, because I have been rough on them and just tend not to like them much.

Well, the premise was interesting, and it was nice to see Samuel L Jackson in a more subdued role for a change (one where he wasn't yelling constantly).  Other than that, though, I was kind of let down by the final product.

*Spoiler alert*

I thought the happy ending didn't fit either.  I think he should have never gotten out of that room.

Wait a sec,, Did I catch another movie with an alternate ending that have become so freakin common? The ending I saw, was that of him using his $400 booze to set himself and the room on fire, and the only way he left that room was dead and on a strecher. Was mine an alt. ending??

I'm with you all. Pretty good film until the very end. Still a respectable entry in the "haunted house" (well, haunted room) list, and a damn good one man show for the most part.

I had posted on this one earlier, and your opinion mirrors mine.  Some of the problem was their trying to stretch a 25 - 30 page short story into a two hour movie.  And it seems like they frequently try to end Stephen King's stories more happily than he does . . . . like CUJO!!!!

*** out of ****.

John Cusack's remarkable performance is what really makes this film work. I actually thought that the theatrical cut worked better though I did prefer the extended cut ending a bit more.

There are two endings.  He lives in one, apparently (you could interpret it differently though), and dies in the other.  I like the theatrical ending better.

******SPOILER******

There are 3 ending that I know of ...

One where he lives and is listening to the tape and hears his daughter freaking his wife out.

One where he dies in the fire and his publisher get a draft of 1408 that he mailed from the Post Office that turned out to be the room.

and the 3rd one I forget ...

*****END SPOILER*****

I agree the movie was good at the start and just fell apart near the end.
