Title: Libraries
Post by: Mr. DS on November 19, 2007, 07:57:24 PM
Does anyone here use their local library?  The ones in my state are pretty cool because they actually have a pretty good selection of movies.  That and they use the system where one library can transfer material to the one closest to you.  I also find libraries a cool place to chill out.

I guess it's no secret, since I posted at "Weird News Stories," but as I work at a library and have, at one library or another for almost 32 years, I visit my library at least five times a week, sometimes more.

Well when I have time I go to work on genealogy stuff, our library has a sucky movie selection. I have a better collection at home and often give many of my excess DVD's to the library in hopes they expand the their collection. I think more are stolen than stay there.

Libraries are great because you can get just about any book through a good library system. They can obtain books from far places and you pick them up when they arrive for free. The only draw back is you have to read them right away because you eventually have to return them.

I use libraries for video's on occasion, but not much anymore.

I voted for "Never".

I used to go to our local library all the time but now that I've had the internet at home for years, anything I need to know I can just Google.

As for just reading books for enjoyment, I've got enough books to last me several years.
I've got about 20-30 books here in my apt. that I have yet to read and about 50-100 more in boxes stored in my parent's basement.
Books take me forever to read.
I've never understood how someone could read a 500+ page book in a day or two.
To me, that'd be like watching a movie on fast forward.

The average book takes me around a month to finish.  Most of the time they're read while sitting on the john so I only get to read small bits at a time.

So when I go to the library and check out books, I end up racking up a bunch of late fees because I hang on to them for so long.
I'd rather just buy the book than check it out from the library.

As for the movie selection there, I remember that it was so-so...but that was years ago.
It's funny, the library is about five blocks away from my building.  I could walk there if I wanted to.
Maybe I'll stop by there one of these days and see if they've got a better movie selection.

Very similar thoughts, Scott
When I want to read a book that the library does not have readily available, they have borrowed such title from some other library in the network (which is vast.)

I voted occasionally, "Every so often," because borrowing movies used to be my main reason to go and my local has a fairly good selection of titles (when they're there) but honestly, these days I don't watch movies much unless they happen to be on when I'm there to watch them!

I go every so often to buy books. When books get old...or to damaged-they sell them! For a quarter apiece! Granted...must are crappy...but once in awhile you find a nice gem. I got a large hardcover book called TO BE CONTINUED... which is a pictorial history of the old serials from the 1920's up until the 1950's. GREAT book!

We have a good one about 2 miles away.  Jenna already has a library card and goes every 1-2 weeks to turn in her books and pick out some new ones.

I'm nowhere close to being out of books at home, but I take the kids every few weeks for books and movies, and I usually find something to take home myself...

 This might come as a shock to my BM.org friends (that's all of you) but I actually trained as a librarian ~ that training comes in useful in my day to day job.

Just a quick heads up: the IFLA www.ifla.org (http://www.ifla.org) Conference which was held in Durban this year is going to be held in Quebec in August 2008. I have written a paper for it on South African literary censorship so there is a chance that I might go there: my first time in Canada and on the North American continent.

Once in a while for me.  Our library is fairly old and they've got it fixed up quite nice, so it's a cool place to just chill out.  I used to wander through the paperback aisles and find some interesting stuff, and I just like walking around the place, climbing the narrow stairways, looking through the little windows  :teddyr:  They've got a lot of classical music CD's, but their movie selection it pretty poor.  The trouble is I bought this four book set, the Star of the Guardians series by Margaret Weis, and until I finish that I can't really justify going and getting more books from the library.  And I don't seem to be finishing it very quickly.

With reading, audiobooks, and a small child I go every week.   I love libraries.
