Title: The US vs Russia Davis Cup Final
Post by: Zapranoth on December 01, 2007, 02:42:48 AM
I got to do something unusual, and that I've wanted to do for a long time -- I finally saw some men's pro tennis in person today.  My wife and I drove down to Portland and watched the first two singles matches in the Davis Cup final.

We watched Andy Roddick pound 140-something MPH serves past Dmitry Tursonov, and then another great match between James Blake and Mikhail Youhzny.  Outstanding match -- lots of major exchanges of firepower, three tiebreakers, a very loud crowd rooting for the US, and hey!  We won both matches!

I'll watch the doubles on TV tomorrow, but if the Bryan brothers lose, I think the sun might fall into the sea.

My observations, in brief:

1.  That serve of Andy's is just freakin' fast and nasty.  It looks fast on television?  Well... It just seems all the more amazing that Federer can return it so well.

2.   James Blake is a lot of fun to watch.  He can defend so well, and when he flattens out that forehand, as a spectator there are times when you literally kind of wonder where the ball went.  (Like when you're watching hockey and you lose the puck.)

Great matches, and I got to watch our guys win for us.   It was so cool!  Now I've got to figure out how, when and where to see Roger, the greatest of them all, play a match live...
