Title: Your NUMBER 1 coke/soda/pop?
Post by: CheezeFlixz on December 08, 2007, 01:06:02 PM
Every area has a local favorite and this morning in the mist of working I was drinking a Sun Drop (http://www.sundrop.net/) and a area new comer was like what's that? I said this my friend is the nectar of the God's, this is liquid gold, this is the very stuff that dreams are made of.
Ok maybe it's not that great, but it is the local flavor and if you drive 50 miles north, east or west of here it becomes difficult to find. However south into Tennessee you get closer to the heart of Sun Drop.

When I lived in Hopkinsville it was "Kickapoo Joy Juice (http://www.kickapoojoy.com/index.html)" or "Squirt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squirt)" in Lexington it was "Ale8One (http://www.ale8one.com/index.html?CFID=515156&CFTOKEN=43776552)"  While growing up it was "Double Cola (http://www.double-cola.com/)" and in the military it was "Cheerwine (http://www.cheerwine.com/)"

I know many area have local favorites and/or local brands. So what's yours?

DR PEPPER is the only beverage in the world for me  . . .   but if you go down to Dublin, TX you can get the original formulation, sweetened with pure cane sugar instead of corn syrup . . . . truly the Ambrosia of the Gods.

I've had those pure sugar cane ones when I did work in TX, they are indeed good. I'm a big DP fan of the major brands of coke (everything is coke here) that and RC Cola. Both of which I have in the fridge right now.

I drink Coca-Cola by the gallons. I cannot live without it. Watching me drink it is like watching an addict get a fix after too long a wait. I have built up such a resistance to caffeine that I can easily drink an entire six pack (or more) at ten at night and be asleep by eleven. Mountain Dew runs a close second at times, but while I don't always have it in the house, my frig has never been without coke in it since 1985.  :teddyr:

As for regional brands...I dunno. I never sample much other than coke and the dew.

Okay, I am against soda drinking, particularly colas, because they are poison... however, I keep Pepsi, diet and regular, plus ginger ale, in the house for my many friends who drink nothing but.

When I was growing up, I preferred RC Cola to Pepsi or Coke, but I haven't had one in 30 or more years.

In New Jersey I grew up with BROOKDALE soda which came in many flavors (and it was cool to return the bottle for the deposit.)  My own favorite of the many BROOKDALE sodas was Cream and Birch Beer, though I liked their Orange soda too.

Mt. Dew has been my favorite for a while. I also like Mello-Yellow, but it's hard to find.l

When I was growing up we had a local bottling company in town called Clems. They made the usual, Cola, Orange, Grape, Cream Soda, and something called R-Pep, which was their version of Dr. Pepper.

I liked Pepsi too when I was kid. They were the first to have a 16oz bottle and we used to pour a bag of peanuts in the bottle eat them while drinking the Pepsi.

Mello Yello is pretty wide spread here, rather easy to find.

We use to do that with the 10 oz. Dr. Pepper's and those small bags of Planters Peanuts, for some reason it just doesn't taste the same in plastic bottles. I try to buy glass bottles when I can they seem to me to just taste better.

I guess a nice, cold Canada Dry ginger ale is my favorite.  But I also love a good root beer once in awhile.  And whenever I can get my hand on a Coke in a glass bottle (tough to get in the United States, but they seem to be pretty common in other countries).  Ice cold Fresca is also very good.

Sun Drop was a pretty good soda.
We used to have it here in Iowa all the time but it seems to have disappeared.

Another good soda that's been discontinued is Surge.
Ice cold fountain Surge was the best!

As for my favorite...I'd have to say it's A&W Cream Soda.

You can order it but as much as they want for it online it'd about be cheaper to drive here and get it and bootleg SunDrop back to Iowa. Online they want $24.00 case and $13.00 shipping. A tad high when a case here sells for $5.00. I swear they sell it everywhere here, you go to the farm store and they'll have a pallet of it setting out next to the catfish feed and salt blocks, the coke coolers in stores will have all kinds of brands in the coolers and they'll be one entire cooler full of only SunDrop. I have no idea why it's so popular here, half the signs in town advertise it. You know those store name advertising signs like "Hank's Hardware" either end of the sign will have a big SunDrop logo on it. It's rather strange.

Back when my friends and I created the anti-social social group known as H.O.P.E.L.E.S.S., our mascot-like drink of choice was a generic blue raspberry type of soda created by a drink company known as Top Pop. The beverage in question was simply known as "Blue Pop", but was one of the greatest oral sensations the NY and PA region would ever know... or not know, considering it wasn't around long and probably wasn't very popular... even though we bought up entire gas station inventories of the stuff every time we'd get together to watch bad movies in someone's basement for an entire weekend.

Interestingly enough, while searching for an image of the elusive consumable to post here, I discovered an actual MySpace community dedicated entirely to the drink! Despite being a self-imposed societal outcast, sometimes it's good to know you're not alone.

I guess it depends on what kind of soda we are talking about, if I had to choose a favorite.

If it's cola, then I'll usually choose Coke over Pepsi.  My wife is a huge Pepsi fan but I've never really cared much for it.  Coke just has a much better taste to me.  Not only that, but I have fond memories of drinking bottled Coke growing up.  On occasion during the summer, you can still find actual glass bottles of it here.  Just doesn't taste the same in plastic.

As for the fruity/energy drinks, I'd have to say Surge which Ash mentioned.  That stuff was some of the best tasting soda ever created.  Now that it's discontinued, I'd have to say that Vault is my new drink of choice.  It sort of a mix between Surge and Mello-Yellow.  Pretty good stuff, but still not a substitute for Surge.

Also wanted to comment on Sun Drop.  I always loved those growing up as well.  Haven't had one in ages.  Coming up, I remember that they used to have the pulp still floating inside the liquid.  Is that still the case?  I might have to search around here and see if anyone carries it here.

IN new Orleans they sued to have this stuff called Cajun Cola that was amazing.  it was coke that had like cinammon in it or something.

Also,  in order to get REAL Coca cola, no i don't mean with cocaine,  you have to go at least south of the border where they make it with SUGAR instead of frickkin CORN SYRUP!!

As a kid I drank whatever my parents bought, but preferred Coke to Pepsi, we bought what was on sale. My grandparents only shopped at Winn-Dixie stores and for years only bought the Chek store brand drinks. I'm told Diet Dr. Chek is good for pouring on fire ant mounds.

I took the Pepsi Challenge at the state fair one year, I picked Coke. The pretty girl in the booth was nice but seemed disappointed in me, guess they trained them to be that way. I don't think my life has been the same since.

When I first discovered it on a family trip, I fell in love in with Barq's root beer. Couldn't get enough of the stuff, when we would come back from trips to Florida, my parents would stop outside of Birmingham (the closest place we could find it) and buy a case to shut me up. We'd buy it at gas stations usually, but we started to buy it at this shady liquor/smokes/porn/junk food/who knows what else store clinging to the side of I-65. I wasn't supposed to be allowed in the store, they had it posted you were supposed to be 19 0r 21 to even enter. "Make it last," they'd tell me, I rarely had a can of the stuff left a week later.

In my teens and college days I was an RC fan, pure heaven. One summer they had a promo with prizes under the cap. I almost made it through the whole summer never having to buy more than 5 of them I got so many free ones. A few years later, they became too sweet for me, just like Dad said they did for him. The last one I bought was a high end RC product that didn't fly (RC Draft?), came in a bottle like a beer bottle, the guy at the counter tried to card me for it.

I went though a Red Rock Cola phase, because it was cheap, and the grocery stores all had it. Don't know how local it is. Red Rock tasted like a rawer more effervescent Coke. I guess it's still around.

I switched back to Coke for years and years, but now I rarely touch the stuff, having cut back on sugar and caffeine. I have about one soft drink a month, at parties if nothing else is there, to settle my stomach if a little sick (rather have ginger ale though), or for quick empty calories when I forget my lunch at work.

Not as much stuff floating in it as there use to be, it's the WOOD ROSIN ... yes SunDrop is made from WOOD. Ok I don't know if it's made from wood but it has glycerol ester of wood rosin in it, what ever the hell that is. I guess if you need to rosin up your bow.

Believe it or not SunDrop and Whiskey is a popular mix here, at first I thought it was just wrong and sounded nasty but it's actually pretty tasty.

AS for regular Cola's, RC and COKE is the brands of choice here. Not many Pepsi drinkers unless it's Pepsi Twist which comes and goes around here, never know if you can find it or not. But Coke Lime seems to be pushing it out.

Coca Cola for me, no Pepsi. (yeccch)  Don't know why, I just can't stand the taste of Pepsi.

When I was living in South Carolina I got introduced to Blenheim's Ginger ale.  It's a real ginger ale, with a very tart flavor, not sickly sweet.

I don't know where the stuff comes from, but around here you can buy this glass-bottle stuff from a company called Jones Cola and they make a variety of flavored sodas with ridiculous names like Foo Foo Berry.  In spite of the names, they're some of the most delicious bevs I've laid taste on.  They have a grape flavored one called MF Grape that is the best of the best.  They're an absolute treat and a little hard to come by.

My real affinity, though, is energy drinks.  Until I stopped working over the weekends, I was what you might consider an afficionado.  I'd had all the common stuff, the Red Bulls, the Amps, Monster, but I loved tracking down weird stuff that you didn't see too often.  Walmart was a great resource for this.  At Walmart I found:

The Stephen Segal energy drink which featured his face on the can and a can-length explanation of the ingredients and how they're spiritually beneficial.  I bought the blue one which had some eastern sounding name but tasted like Amp, Mountain Dew's energy drink.  Provided absolutely no buzz.

Old Glory, America's Best Energy Drink which tasted like really sweet, carbonated apple cider but featured wrap-around can-art of the flag, which a s**tty eagle drawn over the name and the pledge of allegiance on the side with UNDER GOD emphasized in all caps.  It tasted like crap but you're not likely to ever find another beverage with that kind of ridiculous presentation.  Minor buzziness.

The Hulk Hogan Energy Drink which was red and yellow and tasted like any other Monster energy drink.  Cartoony drawing of the Hulkster on the side, zero buzz.

At a pizza place a few doors down from where I worked, they ordered whatever exotic looking energy drinks were at their disposal:

Freak Maniac - No idea who they were targeting with this product, but the side asked what kind of freak you were and included the option of being a boob freak, so this drink became my defacto favorite for this reason alone.  Tasted like cider, not bad, crazy buzz.

NoS - Contained in an opaque, blue bottle with a cap that looked like a valve handle.  Tasted incredibly citrus-y and provided a crazy buzz.  We'd put away as many of these as we could in an hour and spend the rest of the night flipping out behind the counter.

Jolt - Remember this stuff?  Seemed hard to find for so long and still is to some degree.  They repackaged the cola plus other flavors in these pressure sealed vessels that pop loudly when you open them.  The cola is plain old Jolt Cola but now there's Jolt Red, which tastes, as I imagine it would, like Red, Jolt Blue which tastes like a sickeningly sweet blue drink, Jolt Orange, which is like any old orange soda, Jolt Silver which is like Sprite, Cherry Bomb which is like Dr. Pepper, and Purple which is their grape variant.  Of them all, Grape was the king and the buzz that these things delivered was unparalelled.  We got them for free from the pizza place and routinely pushed the envelope to see how far we could take it.  This stuff routinely left us completely out of control.

For me, if it's cherry and cola, I love it. When they still had it, Cherry Cola RC was my favorite as it tasted the closest to those restaurant cherry colas that used actual cherry syrup in the cola. Once that disappeared though it became Wild Cherry Pepsi.

If I didn't limit myself I could probably drink half a 12 pack in under an hour. O_o

They still sell Cherry RC here, RC is big here too. Coke is still king and RC is 2nd in the colas. You might just have to request a store carries it.

hard to find here - but Goose Island. 100% pure cane sugar
That means no HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP - genetically modified. It tastes like how soda used to taste back in the day

Try finding a soda with sugar and not high fructose corn syrup next time you go shopping. Just try

not easy is it? But it's worth it

Sioux-  half the stuff in my refrigerator has corn something or other in it.  frikkin corn subsidies.  Guliani and Romney were towing the line at the last GOP debate of how neccasary they are, even though corn prices are through the roof.  had nothing to do with wanting to win the states that get the subsidies I'm sure.

Aw, man.

I work doing night stock at a grocery store up here in Minnesota and I asked our RC pop vendor about it and he said they don't carry it anymore as far as he could tell, at least in our area. I guess where I live the distributors don't want to sell it or something cause they're stupid?

well i don't think that high fructose corn syrup should be high on our list, and yet it's in EVERYTHING. Even stuff that woudn't even have sugar in it. i'm not quite a fan of so many additives that have to be put into food, particularly any that seem engineered in a lab

Rapscallion, I think Jones Cola comes from Canada. I've have several people recommend it to me even though they know I don't  drink sodas much any more. Wasn't sure which one to try.

BTW, anyone from an area where they still sell Moxie? Always wanted to try one.

Is Double Cola still around? That used to be huge here when I was little, or at least they had a much bigger ad budget back then. As a kid I thought they were owned by Pepsi since the logo design were similar, like Ford had Mercury and Lincoln, I thought Double Cola was a variant of the Pepsi formula. Strange I know.

Before there was Mellow Yello, does anyone remember a drink like Sun Drop or Mountain Dew called Kick? I can remember the cans and some cheesy 70s/early 80s TV ads.

You really should read my first post ... LOL

Kickapoo Joy Juice AKA Kick (http://www.kickapoojoy.com/index.html)

Double Cola (http://www.double-cola.com/)

I see KICK on occasion around here, but I haven't seen it in a while though come to think of it. I use to drink it, it was pretty tasty. Kick started as Kickapoo Joy Juice then it was Kick now it's back to Kickapoo Joy Juice again. I'll have to see if I can locate some around here.

I can get Double Cola a little south of here in TN about 8 miles away. I like Double Cola as a kid because every bottle tasted different like they kept changing the formula. It's made in Chattanooga.

I did, believe it or not, just forgot I guess between my own ramblings and the thread going to two pages. Sorry.

I honestly haven't seen Kick since about '85. Never knew about the other name. Mellow Yello did seem to replace it in my neck of the woods (NW Alabama).

Double Cola may still be around here, but not in the grocery stores I go to. Need to try the other smaller chains again. I've only seen Red Rock in Foodland stores. The Chattanooga connection probably explains Double Cola's strong presence her at one time, Huntsville provides most of the network TV affiliates for this part of the state and is close enough to Chattanooga for easy distribution and advertising.

All that switch to the new coke and coke II was only because coke was switching over to HFCS like all the other bottlers.

which is probably why the classic coke now still, as many know, doesn't taste exactly the same as it used to. I think they intentionally came out with less superior versiosn of coke so people would forget the original classic taste and when they reintroduced it with HFCS people probably wouldn't not notice the differnece since new coke was bad. I'm sticking with that theory, it would actually be a good marketing strategy to take a few blows in order to reboost sales and create a loyalty

Jones sodas are great, you can't walk into a store around here without seeing a display. My favorite is probably the cream soda.Just don't try any of the holiday flavors such as ham or turkery and gravy, unless you are truly brave. And while i like jones soda, i love their jones soda candy which is fizzy. unfortuneatly you can't get the candy around here so every birthday my aunt sends me a box stuffed full of various flavors.

BSK,

I hear you on the tea.  To be completely honest, a big glass of sweet tea is what you'll find me drinking whether at home or in a restaurant.  I make my own here at the house and my wife and I will normally go through a gallon about every two days.

Sort of a Strawberry Cream Soda with extra carbonation. They have a big bin at my local store full of them for 20 oz size for 50 cents, I bought $20 worth the other day. Must have been a special, normally they're about a $1 each.

Well here is a drink that for some reason is marketed mainly in KY and TX, it's made in TX and I rarely ever see it or here of it anywhere other than KY or TX. As far as I know.

We've had Big Red here in Iowa for years and as far as I know, Wal-Mart is the only place that sells it.
It's an ok soda but kinda bland.
Give me strawberry Crush anyday over Big Red.

Crush is good, no doubt.

I find these at Big Lots on occasion, and they have them at all the Mexican groceries around here, of which they're are plenty.

Doesn't Quentin Tarantino have a fetish for Big Red soda?

Ahhhhhh, okay. I saw the Big Red drink display in the convenience store scene of the Death Proof director's cut shortly after hearing something about his obsession with "Big Red", so my mind made a connection that wasn't there. Thanks Ska!

I rarely drink soda, favoring milk, Arizona brand tea, and Sobe Life Water/Snapple Antioxidant Water/Glaceau Vitamin Water, but when I do drink soda, I'm definitely a Coke guy.  Anything diet is for Nazis.

Actually, I think it was Red Apple cigarettes.

Ash is 100% correct, it was Red Apple cigs.

I don't recall if they made an appearance in Reservoir Dogs but I know for a fact that they have been in all of his films from Pulp Fiction on.  I recall Bruce Willis buying a pack at the bar when he meets with Marcellus Wallace in Pulp.

You mean Red Apple cigs.    :bouncegiggle:

They also made an appearance in Kill Bill Vol. 1.
When The Bride arrives in Tokyo, she walks by a billboard advertisement on the wall that shows Sofie Fatale with a Red Apple cigarette in her hand and a pack of them next to her.

Here's the pic...

Goya is in Wal-Mart and the Southern Family Market chain (IIRC) around here. Never tried any of them.

I think Big Red was sold around here when I was a kid but I could be wrong.

Like I said earlier, used to drink a lot of Cokes/sodas, but have weened down to very few. I drink iced tea still, unsweetened when I eat out. I switched to decaff at home, and am cutting down the amount of sugar I put in it. may go cold turkey on the sugar in it at the new year.

I used to love Vanilla Coke, but I don't drink soft drink any more.

Now my vice is coffee, but freshly brewed.  I buy the beans from Starbucks, grind them at home and into a coffee plunger they go!

When I lived in Canada a few years ago, I loved Cherry Coke and they had Coke that had a bluish tinge to it which I think was blueberry (?).  Unfortunately, we don't have any of that stuff in Australia.  If we didn't I'd probably go back to drinking it.

Of the major brands, I prefer Mountain Dew, Pepsi, and once in a while Coke.

My job though, is in a restaurant with over 100 different types of soda, many pure cane types too.  It ranges from the major types to our own brands of soda.  So someone could waltz in and order a cherry chocolate soda, made with cherry and chocolate.  Or they could go the opposite direction and order a chocolate milkshake, only substitute the milk for Coke and have a chocolate coke shake.  Good stuff.

Same as everyone else I'd be better off not drinking soda, but I love the stuff too much, unfortunately.  My all-time favorite would be Coke.

Recently I've become a fan of Vernors, but I can only find it at one particular Kroger near where I live.  Ale 8 One is another fine ginger ale and a local favorite, but Vernors kicks its ass I'd say.

One of my best friends introduced me to Cheerwine a number of years ago and it's a wonderful cherry flavored soda.  His grandmother lives in North Carolina where it's made and he'd usually come back with a stockpile of it after visiting her.  For a while I could find it locally at Wal-Mart and a couple of convenience stores, but noone seems to carry it anymore.  :(

I haven't had Sun Drop in many years, but I remember during my elementary school years that I drank some one night and it kept me up until 3am.

Pilgermann,

I'm from NC and didn't realize that Cheerwine was a local soda.  I love the stuff, especially did as a kid.  Haven't had one in a long time.  Might have to hit up the grocery store tonight and pick up a 2 liter.

I have to drive to TN to get Cheerwine here, but that's only about 10 miles to the store. The local distributor doesn't come into KY and very few places carry it even in western TN. Good stuff.

We've had it here in Michigan for a looong time. It costs 89 cents...just like RC Cola. In fact...I'm drinking one now!

Cheerwine! However, they don't like "Yankees taking all the Cheerwine up North, or so their news correspondences will tell you (I know it's a joke) I generally only have access to this golden elixir when I'm down south or if I order a case, though, so typically Mug Root Beer or Jamaican Cream:

Up here Irn Bru is almost an alternative national drink. It's like an orange coloured (but not flavoured) soda which I think is supposed to resemble molten metal.

I looked up Irn Bru and it sounds interesting, and apparently some US companies import it but the FDA lists it as a banned substance 'cause of carcinogenic coloring.  Booooo

Has anyone had Blenheim ginger ale?  I really want to try the stuff.  It sounds painful. (http://www.bevnet.com/reviews/blenheim/UserReviews_54.asp)

I don't drink soft drink and haven't for a long time.  I can't actually find soft drink that's made with sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.

I heard on the radio yesterday that they had had to alter the recipe for Irn Bru to remove the offending colouring. Perhaps thet should really do that here too.

In South Africa, it's always safer to stick to brand name colas like Pepsi and Coca-Cola as there are far too many drinks that are labelled  ____ Cola or Cola _____ and you really don't know what you're getting until you're on your knees in front of the toilet.  :buggedout: :buggedout:

My parents like a brand called Big C Cola which is one of those strange drinks as well as the brands that our local chainstores Shoprite, Checkers and Pick 'n Pay put out. Those give me major stomach pains and way too much gas, so I steer clear of them.

If you drink it before you go and see some friends it'll be worth it.
