Title: Kung Pow, Enter the Fist (2001)
Post by: CheezeFlixz on December 08, 2007, 07:30:22 PM
(http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00007J355.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg)

There was a old thread on this from 2002 I opted not to drag up.

But this is one goofy flix, but I like it.

Steve Oedekerk sort of remade "Hu He Shuang Xing" (1977) by redoing the dialog and digitally inserting himself and others into this old kung fu flick. And for me it's work it's just stupid enough long enough to be funny. I would say this is where Kung Fu Hustle got the idea from.

Just watch the clip then see the movie. It's a blast with friends. (and few beers doesn't hurt either)

I'll give it a 4 out of 5 for it's cleverness and Monty Pythonish comedy.

I really like this movie.  If you can find it, the original movie is good, too.  It typically goes by either "Tiger and Crane Fist" or "Chinese Killers".  One or the other can usually be found in those 50 movie packs of martial arts films.

This is one of those movies that I didn't really like the first time I saw it, but it grew on me quickly afterwards with repeated viewings. I shout out "THAT'S A LOT OF NUTS!" at least two or three times a week... and I haven't watched it in at least three years!  :teddyr:

Oh man, this is a good film.  It's over the top and corny as hell, but it's enjoyable to watch.

Fantastic film that I was a bit wary of due to the previews at it's time of release.  Ended up being much funnier than anything I could have hoped for.  Very silly film that I highly recommend.

This movie is hilarious.  I never heard of it until my son mentioned it.  He was raving about this movie for a while but his explanation never made sense.  I don't even know how he found out about it.

I managed to find it on DVD in a record/DVD store last week for about $10 so I bought it for him for xmas.  He was delighed and we spent a great Friday night eating popcorn and laughing ourselves silly.  Now all I need to find are Good Burger and Brain Donors and I can die happy.

Amazon has them both for under $10 each. So does Deep Discount, they might be on there buy one get one free deal, I don't know. DVD Empire has them and if you buy over $100 worth of stuff there is a discount code for $15 off I posted in another thread.

So go get them and die happy.

I saw Kung Pow in a theater during it's brief theatrical run (it did however exceed it's budget in terms of gross by 2 million).

I love this movie and the DVD is even better in that you can hear what the English speaking actors were actually saying before they dubbed their own dialogue.

Plus, anything that Master Payne utters in this movie is just classic!

Awesome movie!

I know people who will get up and leave the room if this movie is on TV.
They hate it that much.
Oh well, they're missing out.

Every now and then the scene where Betty is looking at those pictures and says, "Tiger...Birdie...Tiger...Birdie!" will pop into my head.
Too funny!

The chick has to be modeled after Miss Piggy.
And Betty's sneer always cracks me up.

NYAAHHHH!!!

"Open your mouth!"

Random guy on street: "Hey guys, what's going on?" [gets knocked flat]

"That's a lot of nuts!"

"My finger points."

"He's an outsider, you ever seen him before?"
[Ten minutes pass by with many mouth movements] "No."

"You go that way, I'll go home."

"We are ventriloquists...."

"Knock knock, who's there? Your butt that's about to be kicked."

"If you've got an ass, I'll kick it."

"Try my nuts to your fist style!"  :teddyr:

"I must apologize for Wimp Lo: he is an idiot."

"Prepare to accept the Fist of Fury: Eenie meenie minie mo, I wonder where my glove will go?" :teddyr:

"What in God's name is that thing?"

"You are a disgrace to French aliens!"

"Swingin' a chain......."

"Let me know if you see a Radio Shack...."

"Yes, yes, play me like a drum."

"I'll have whatever he's smoking!"

"He'll kill you like a small dog......"

"Because I rule, baby!"

"what do you get when you cross an owl and a bungee cord? My ass!"

"Weeeeoooooooweeeeeejggggghhhhhhhhh!"

"And then, he killed the dog.............................."

"Wimp Lo sucks as a fighter, a child could beat him!"

Master Tang: [Master Tang walking and singing] Hmm, chicken go cluck-cluck, cow go moo. Piggy go oink-oink, how bout you? Wanna be an animal just like you.
[breaks off and looks around]
Henchman: [in bushes] Cuckoo! Cuckoo!
Master Betty: Mmm, I'm just a birdie, too!
Master Tang: [resumes singing] Lemur go pff-pff, Ostrich go baah. Koala go
Master Tang: [makes clicking noises]
Master Tang: [spins to face Betty]

Ling: But Chosen One, I'd like to help you, but I, I, I, I, I , I, I just can't. I won't! WEE-OOH, WEE-OOH!
Chosen One: He wasn't at the restaraunt, do you know where he is?
Ling: No, I won't tell. Stay, stay and live, live a life with me. WEE-OOH!
Chosen One: Look Ling, those curly qs in your hair make me so hot I can't think straight!
Ling: you'll never make it. Never make it. Never make it. Never make it, never. Don't you see you can't make it?
[Chosen One grabs her shoulders and is clearly swearing]
Chosen One: [calmly] I implore you to reconsider.
Ling: Hmmmmm, OK.

I would say this is where Kung Fu Hustle got the idea from.

The tone is similar, but Chow's humor style was well-established by the mid 90s - and Shaolin Soccer is quite similar to Kung Fu Hustle and came out in 2001.  It'd be interesting for someone to do a direct comparison of them, as there might be something more there.  Kung Pow is definitely more satirical on the genre though.

Kung Pow isn't the greatest spoof around, but there are some very funny moments.  I particularly like the one ninja who tries to do the poof of smoke to disappear but fails.  Also, the guy who uses a chunk of himself as a weapon.  Oh yeah, and "I am a great magician!  YOUR SHIRT IS RED!"

"let me know if you see...a radio shack"

I was way way into kung fu movies when I saw this so it was really perfect timing.  I was incredulous at the lack of respect it got but now i sort of understand though I still love it.

"it is you Chosimba one"

This movie was a little over the top for me, but it still had its moments.  I could have done without the whole Matrix-inspired "Cow Fu with Milk Bullets" scene, though.

I have this move; saw it during its theatrical run too.  I always liked the "nevermind Wimp-Low; he's an idiot -we trained him wrong on purpose"

Also like anything said by Betty "I make the booty bounce" plus his boom box buddy always playing some theme (Like MC Hammer for example) lol.

This is one of those flicks I thought I would hate, but after watching it I found myself rolling on the floor laughing.  It was great!

At first it was okayish with good parts but it's grown on me since. There are still some pretty horrible parts that I could live without.
