Title: Canoa (1975)

This started out kind of slow, but the second half was riveting.   The presentation is plain but very effective.  the real incident on which the movie is based is:  a bunch of college kids who through some bad luck, end up as unwelcome vistors in a town controlled by an evil priest.

Basically, it's a very interesting story and the director gives you as much of it as he can jam in to 2 hours of film.  The actors are all good, though there are strangely no women with anymore than a line or two.  There is a political message of how tyrants use intimidation, carrots and sticks, and other methods to worm their way in to peoples lives till all of the sudden one day they are under it's thumb and helpless. But it's left up to the viewer, not instructed to you by a narrorater or something.  No masked wrestlers, but a great Mexican movie nonetheless.
