Title: My Anime Review #4
Post by: Fausto on December 17, 2007, 10:26:00 PM
This month's Anime review features a Gothic Lolita theme (I wanted to find some Christmas Anime, but I'll have to save that for july). Today also starts the use of letter grading (A-F). Happy Holidays!

Rozen Maiden: Teenage shut in Jun-Kun treats his loving older sister like crap and, instead of going to school, bides his time by ordering occult objects off the internet, sending them back before he has to pay. One day, a site tells him to place his order in the top drawer of his desk. Soon after, a mysterious wooden box appears, containing a Victorian doll and a key. Wound up, the doll comes to life, slapping Jun across the face for being rough with her. The doll is a "Rozen Maiden" which, while sounding like the name of a german death metal band, is one in a series of dolls that fight each other to the death to win the approval of their creator, a man known only as "Father". This is basically another take on the whole "Pokemon/Yu-gi-oh/Zatch Bell" concept, with a non-human entity employing a human to help in battles and be the best at something. I wasnt all that impressed with the english dubbing (I didnt get to check out the subtitled version) but othewise not bad. Worth the rental, if not a purchase. B

Venus Versus Virus: A secret organization, known as the Venus Vanguard, defends helpless victims from demonic creatures known as viruses. The newest member of the group, Sumrie, must learn to put her old life behind her and accept her fate, as well as to control the mysterious beserker power, which helps her to remove viruses but blinds her to the difference between friend and foe. Recommended for those who graviate toward the dark side of anime. B+
