Title: Cloverfield Monster Attacks!!
Post by: trekgeezer on January 07, 2008, 08:23:56 AM
This is an interesting tidbit, but I don't know why they chose the Italian version of the video. It doesn't much matter, the action tells the story.

Looked like the upper half of Godzilla's body swimming away from the wreckage there at the end.

I still think we aren't ever going to get a clear look at the monster during the movie.

I also don't think that we'll get a really good look at the monster in this one. I'm also getting way too much of a Blair Witch vibe from this one anyway (which is bad as I thought that movie was horrendous).

I have the feeling that the audience will NEVER see the entire monster, just quick glimpses of its tail, feet, teeth, etc... I think in the end we will all be utterly confused and will end up making our own conclusions. Can't wait!

I fear that the marketing behind this movie will be more interesting than the film itself...

I'm always game for a good monster movie. I don't know anything about the script. I hope that the movie just doesn't focus on the social lives of New Yorkers and how a giant monster cramps their style. I want to see mayhem on a Godzilla like scale rampaging across the country. I'd also like to see a Cthulhu link here some giant Lovecraftian badboy. If it is just The Mist Meets The Big Apple I'll be severely disappointed.

I understand that most of the movie will be in the mode of the Blair Witch Project.

This picture has been totally debunked and so has the one here  (http://www.movieweb.com/news/38/25538.php).

I have also heard rumors that the entire monster won't be shown in Cloverfield.
And I hope those rumors aren't true.

If a huge monster were real, my first and foremost goal would be to keep on living as long as I could.
My second goal would be to see all of the monster from head to tail.
I'd have to get a good look at it.  I would be compelled to see it.
Wouldn't you?

If the filmmakers go the Blair Witch route and not show the full monster and I pay $8-$9 to see it in the theater, I'm gonna be p**sed!
With the Blair Witch...not seeing her worked for that film.
With Cloverfield...we have to see the monster.

They had better show all of the monster.

From the trailers, that seems to be exactly what it's about.  I've decided to just skip Cloverfield and wait for someone else to rent or buy it on DVD, unless the buzz is REALLY good when it comes out.

As far as the Blair Witch goes, my belief is that there are two kinds of people: those who are scared by what they dont see, letting their imaginations create something far scarier than Hollywood could ever create, and then those who need to see something before its real to them. That's why its such a polarizing film - you either love it or you hate it. Note to all filmmakers: if you want a film to be really scary, it should work on both of these levels. The Blair Witch did work for me because it made me imagine scarier stuff than I actually saw, though I can understand it being long and boring for those waiting to see the monster.  :buggedout: As for Cloverfield, we've all seen movies where the heroes are running to escape a city that's being destroyed (independence day, war of the worlds, that crappy new godzilla, etc). The difference between Blair Witch and Cloverfield is that an evil spirit could look like anything, whereas there's only so much you can do with a giant rampaging CGI monster. The only way it could work is if the monster was actually impressive looking, and we actually got to see it. I could be wrong, but this is my opinion.

Hard to compare Blair Witch to Cloverfield. Giant monster movies really aren't scary. They're exciting. People watch them to see cool monsters duke it out and stuff get wrecked. Like a disaster movie, it's about spectacle and suspense and thrills, not fear. For that, you have to see the monster. However, it is better if you don't see it right away, and it's much, much better if the trailer doesn't give the whole thing away as trailers often do.

After three seasons of Lost, I trust J.J. Abrams to know how to craft a compelling story, raise questions, tease the viewer, then show us something cool. We'll see the monster, but not until we really need to see the monster.

I'm going to wait till everyone is bored with it so it'll just be me and two buddies in the theatre. That way we can MST3K the hell out of it. :bouncegiggle:

Harry Knowles at AICN has seen the movie and has a pretty much spoiler free review up. He liked the movie, though that doesn't mean a helluva lot to me.

Thought you guys might find it interesting.

Despite his constant referrals to how much this movie will rock, I'm still skeptical. No movie is so good that it goes beyond the hype. I'm going to wait for a second opinion on it.

I was already disappointed when I found out the giant mutant whale thing was a fake. I'd love to see that in a movie. It's big, impressive, and especially unique. I'd like to see something a bit different from a typical giant monster. The Korean film, The Host, did a nice job in that regard.

I'm still hoping we'll see a great monster in Cloverfield, but that whale would have been amazing.

Knowles isn't known for being as critical as other critics, and some other sites I'm active at are insisting that if Knowles liked it, it has to stink.  I'm planning to see this, but to be honest I'm not going in with high hopes.  I prefer my giant monsters to be Japanese, they make much more entertaining flicks.

Almost everytime I read a review in which Harry Knowles gushes over some movie the movie ends up being complete crap.  I really don't understand how he has gotten to be viewed as such a revered and credible critic by so many people when the man can't hardly type sentences correctly at times IMO.

I'll probably just wait for the DVD.

I don't think that people go to AICN for the reviews. Most talkbackers usually slam the reviews, its like bloodsport. AICN is simply an outlet to hear news and rumors.

I usually go to chud.com (http://chud.com) for any new/rumor type stuff in regards to movies.

AICN gives me a headache a lot of the time in terms of how stuff is "written" on that site.

I'm going to a screening of it - or I'm going to try to - on the 16th at Fox Studios. Yes, I want to see the monster, but I'm also looking forward to the film in general. :)

There's another clip with a new, head-on view of the monster. Of course, you cannot see much, with it being smoky and dark.

You know, as bad as I think it's going to be, I still plan on going next weekend if I can convince my cousin to go with me.  (I hate going to movies alone.)  Maybe it will be either surprisingly good or bad enough to be enjoyable.

I kept rewinding the 9-10 second mark about 20 times in a row and I could just make out two floppy looking Dagon type arms hanging while the poor beast got blasted....akkk, screw this....I need to see this movie....this monster is forcing me to see him!!!

Hate to say it, because I never really bought into the "it's Deanzilla!" stuff, but the arms and the general outline really do look like Deanzilla.

The latest buzz seems to be hinting of an H.P. Lovecraft tie-in with the creature attacking New York. That might be interesting...

You know, I went in expecting to feel ripped off by transformers, but had a good laugh and ultimately had to respect the director, if only a little.

A fellow film buff hated it even though he saw it for free (though he saw it on a small screen). I may go see it just to hate it, or perhaps appreciate something unexpected.

Word is the whole movie is less than 90minutes, and that the first 30 is nothing but annoying college kids being annoying college kids.

It may just be masochism that I'm even still considering it.
