Title: The Moment Of Truth
Post by: Ash on January 24, 2008, 06:26:27 AM
Some of you may have heard of the new TV show called The Moment of Truth.
It aired last night on Fox right after American Idol.

The premise is simple...
Each contestant is hooked up to a polygraph before the show and asked 50 or so different questions.
Then they go onstage and are asked 21 of those same questions.
If they answer truthfully onstage, they advance further and get more money, all the way up to a possible $500,000.
The questions get more personal as they go along.
To make it even more difficult, the contestant's friends, girlfriend/wife/husband and even their boss are onstage with them.  (they sit off to the side)

Check out this short clip:

Sounds like a great idea for a show doesn't it?
It is!

Too bad the deliberate and excruciatingly slow pacing all but ruins what could've been a good show.
You'll notice it in the video...The contestant is asked a question and then they pause.
And they stay paused.  Then they keep on pausing some more.  And then some more until they finally answer.
Then a female voice over the loudspeaker says, "That answer is...."
And then a pause.  A long pause.  When you think it will answer, yep, you guessed it, it pauses for even longer!
AAAHHHHH!!!   :hatred:

I understand what the producers of this show are trying to do.
They want to build suspense.  I mean, who doesn't enjoy a bit of suspense every now & then?  But when that suspense is drawn out for too long it evokes boredom.
And that's exactly what this show is....BORING!
I'd say that in a one hour show, at least 10-15 minutes are nothing but...can you guess?
If you guessed PAUSES, you answered correctly!

It was all I could do to sit through this show.
The length of the pauses has to be cut in half.  No, better yet, cut 'em down even more.
They need to seriously speed this show up or it's gonna be...can you guess?
CANCELLED!

I give this show 1 star out of 4 for boring the living s**t out of me.

I'm right there with you Ash, the idea for the show is a fair one, and when any reality show garners some interest from me or my fiancee Kris it's an achievement on it's own. The problem is with the show mistaking long pauses as a way to build suspense rather than as a way to p**s off the viewers. Kris says that's the same way Fox conducts the American Idol results shows, taking an hour to announce what could literally be said in 10 minutes... and that includes commercials. Fox needs to learn that the real suspense of the show is the way the questions become gradually more personal and potentially embarrassing, and that the constant pausing doesn't heighten the suspense, it just kills whatever suspense was actually being built.    :hatred:

I very deliberately refuse to watch this.  Call me old-fashioned, but I still believe that some private things should remain so, not trotted out to provide humor for a jaded TV audience.  The modern era is like watching every sarcastic parody of gameshows, from Time Bandits to The Running Man, come to life.

I just don't find it the least bit entertaining to watch people sit around and be embarrassed by the public disclosure of their opinions of things.  Also, in the commercials, they're asking people questions like "Do you think you will still be with your husband in 5 years?".  I don't understand how a lie detector can tell if a person is being truthful when they say something they don't know the answer to.

Yeah I hate all the fake suspense crapola.  It makes me turn off in a second.  And I'm with nshumate.  Some things have to be kept private and personal.

They ended up cancelling a quiz type show here because the host (who was actually a news reader) just sat there, breathing heavily and thinking before he spoke.

Another show they had here that was similar to "Truth" was something like "So YOu Want To Date My Daughter".  The girl's parents would interview the poor guy with a lie detector and ask him really personal questions like "do you masturbate?" "have you ever cheated on a girl?" "do you like looking at porn?"  etc.  And then would rate the guy and decide whether he would advance all the way to winning the daughter's hand in marriage or date her or something.  I forget.

I watched a couple of shows and it was so embarrassing and lame and excruciatingly cringeworthy, I stopped watching.  Oddly enough, it didn't last very long   :teddyr:

I've got to agree with you all here, the show has a great premise but if they don't cut out the looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong waiting for answers, people will stop watching.  Also, some of these questions are going to ruin people's lives, but they DID know that when they signed up.  Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Ash and all others who watched, did you find the fact the contestants laughed in surprise when they heard the questions a bit odd?   I mean they take the test before the show so they know what questions are going to come up.  Good observation about slowing down shows like this to an elderly driver speed.  Fox is good for j*rking off time with shows like American Idol, Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader, etc.

As much as I'd like to throw all the blame for the overly dramatic, "p**s of the viewers" pause at Fox, I think it started waaaaaaaaaaaay back with ABC and that damned "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire". Thinking about that shows gives me a twitch in my right eye. Why even bother with the first 5 or so questions if they're all going to follow the same "1 sane answer and 3 retardedly wrong answers" format?! Sweet Jeezus I don't miss that crap... much like I didn't miss "The Moment of Truth" this week when I didn't watch it... I knew I'd bring my post back onto topic before it ended.  :teddyr:

Indeed...that show sucked to high heaven.  I'm not sure why people watched it so much.  I'd rather no hear "hmmmmm...sigh...ummmmmm...I think its...uhhhhh...A...but I'm not sure...hmmmmmm..." for an hour.

I noticed the whole "fake suspense" thing a lot on certain shows.. for instance, I was watching a bit of The Biggest Loser (not a show I watch regularly) and they had the part where each member of the family (or team or whatever) stands on the scale and in large digital numbers they show what the person now weighs, which will tell how much weight they've lost since last week.

Well, here's how it goes, the person stands there, and the numbers flash, starting with a number HIGHER than what the weighed last week, it quickly turns into a number WAY lower than last week, back to a higher, then lower, over and over for about five ten seconds.

Now you know damn the weighing machine isn't "settling" for THAT freaking long.

I refuse to watch it as well.  The idea is interesting to say the least, but it's just so drawn out like Heaven's Gate.

It would be something if someone who knows how to beat the polygraph test (There are ways) was put on the show and they go all the way to the top, just like Micheal Larson did on Press your Luck by beating the system.

I also hate the excruciating pauses in this show. I also hate how they feel the need to reshow half of the previous part after they come back from commercials.

I told one of my friends "Why don't they just call the show, "Questions they are going to answer yes to?"" Because really, who's going to sit around and hear a guy say he's not screwed up. It wouldn't be any fun then. They answer yes to almost all of the questions.

I have a nasty confession to make.  I haven't watched real telly for a while now, but I turned it on the other night and what should pop up but Moment of Truth   :buggedout:  I didn't think we'd get it here.

And I was mesmerised for the whole show.  All the time I was telling myself to change channels or put a DVD on, but I couldn't do it.  They must have cut out a lot of the pauses for our tv because it ripped along at quite a pace, expect for the chick voiceover saying, "that question is..........true."

And instead of just having one person on, they did two but only did half of the second person.  Is that right? Or is it supposed to be two people per episode.  Whichever it is, I won't be watching it again.  Although the Miss America Wannabe chickie that's on next time is going to be in really big trouble.  She has a pretty sister and fat mother and what looks like a gay male friend.

I just want to punch her in the mouth though.  Every time she grinned with that hugely toothy mouth of hers, my face hurt!
