Title: What MOVIES do you like that EVERYBODY ELSE HATES ?? (mine is Boogie Nights)
Post by: Allhallowsday on January 26, 2008, 12:05:20 AM
What MOVIES do you like that EVERYBODY ELSE HATES ?? There is a movie I like everybody seems to hate: BOOGIE NIGHTS

Inspired to start a particular thread by similar threads in the BAD MOVIES forum, I watched BOOGIE NIGHTS again tonight, a film just about nobody seems to like.  This was my third viewing and I think this flick gets better with repeated viewing.  The takes are all long, sometimes very long, and with the sad commentary the effect is, my guess, typically an ill-feeling for the viewer.   The long takes do afford actors of any talent the opportunity to express the characters, and there are many upsetting and poignant moments.  The impressive cast did not sign on to do "porn" or junk (though the dialogue is often "junk") and includes JULIANNE MOORE, BURT REYNOLDS, PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN, MARK WAHLBERG, HEATHER GRAHAM, WILLIAM MACY, DON CHEADLE, ALFRED MOLINA, LUIS GUZMAN, THOMAS JANE, ROBERT RIDGELY... some very fine actors in that group... the candor of this film in dealing with its characters (largely performers and producers of pornography) disgusted, disturbed, or frightened many a filmgoer (***SPOILER***1980 is rung in with a murder/suicide)

I confess I immediately liked this film or should I say I admired it.  After feeling brutalized, we are nursed and lulled back into their dream world and treated to how human love makes a family.  I get this film which I initially found a major downer (and it's still a downer and yet not) but even the first time I still found it morbidly fascintating.  Like many films, particularly starting in the 1980s, this film has many great period recordings for a soundtrack, but unlike films like THE BIG CHILL, the fiber of this film does not come from its awesome soundtrack... it only helps to frame the era depicted.  The fiber is in the easily overlooked moments (like when MARK WAHLBERG as Eddie Adams as "Dirk Diggler" accepts his first adult film award, greets everyone at the table, perhaps 10 or 11 people and strides past his slave, PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN, who is waiting to high-five but is once again ignored).

Refused custody, refused a bank loan, the "pornographers" thrive in their twilight world of sex, drugs, rock'n'roll, but struggle in the real world for any substantive attainment.  This film is more about how sex on film is equatible with violence on film, first as changing commentary within the story, and finally as brutal action by the pornographers and similar visited upon the self-prostituted.  DON CHEADLE has a Quentin Tarrantino moment in a Dunkin' Donuts... and we want it to happen...   :teddyr:

Though this film is loaded with glimpses of stark sexual activity, we are thoroughly reminded of the lens, suddenly as any scene becomes titillating, the eye of the camera reminds the viewer of the taking of the image.

At the very end, in the mid 1980s, the filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson reverts to a 1960s BEACH BOYS tune, "God Only Knows" for the soundtrack which somehow is the perfect choice.  Maybe mostly because this film is from and about California.  Largely misunderstood, ultimately, this film is about finding family.  Enough about my movie...
What MOVIES do you like that EVERYBODY ELSE HATES ??   Lay it on us!

You know people who don't like Boogie Nights?!  Wow. :buggedout:

Mine are less critically acclaimed flicks, like Car 54 Where Are You? and Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. Don't ask me why, but these two movies are on my list of "movies I know I should hate, but I have to watch them every time they're on TV anyway". Heh heh.  :teddyr:

BATTLEFIELD EARTH!

I could never understand why everybody was on this "John Travoltas Big Comeback" kick after PULP FICTION.  He's not that great an actor and all the garbage he was shoehorned into following his Tarantino-aided resurrection shows it.  There was, after all, a reason he had a "Big Go-Away"

The thing about BATTLEFIELD EARTH is that it gives him all this room to be a scenery-chewing ass...and it works.  The whole character of Terl relies on it!  Apparently Travolta's good friends with Forrest Whitaker and their dynamic in the film is a nice touch.  Barry Pepper does admirably, as does personal fave Kim Coates.

The idea of language differences is dealt with pretty subtly and I think most audience members didn't even catch the gag.  The effects are pretty well done...it's the over reliance on "Batman Villain Hideout" camera angles that causes alot of grief for folks.  The director could have used the slo-mo a little more sparingly, but I think he was caught up in using it to stress the ponderous nature of the Psychlos.

Nowadays, very few science fiction films tell a story projected that far into the future.  It's all near-future/rainy/Japanese company logo strewn/rusting robot stuff.

ps...Allhallowsday, it's funny you mention BOOGIE NIGHTS as I was under the impression that I was the only person who didn't like it.  Then again, I'm a big fan of 70s/80s Golden Age porn, so to me Andersons film came across as way too self-aware...kinda like that crappt THAT 70s SHOW.

Hmm well there's a few of those honestly (and by which I mean everybody else seems to hate, who knows for certain). Anyways there's:

ALIEN³: I like the tight spaces, the claustrophic atmosphere of it all. Also felt there were some good performances from several key stars most notably Charles S. Dutton.

ALIEN: RESURRECTION: While not without its problems, I liked a lot of the cast. While ALIEN³ was more a throwback to the original film in many ways, this one is closer to the ALIENS sequel although the European influence of director Jean-Pierre Jeunet is definitely more prevalent here. Some good excitement and unexpected surprises made for an entertaining action thriller for me.

AVP (2004): most people really don't care for this one but I felt it was great fun. Sure it's not up to the level of any of the previous films. This one tries to set itself up under a different mode and is more akin to a puzzle of connected events unraveling. Now there's some definite logic and continuity problems here and there but taken on its own merit, there were moments here that thrilled and entertained me and I liked the gradual build up to an exciting conclusion.

ROBOCOP 2: Just overloaded with action...there's a certain rewatchability factor with this one, even moreso than the original (in fact it proves more fun overall), especially the wonderful stop motion effects.

HIGHLANDER II: I'm one of the very few that likes this one. Truth is I actually prefer this one's SF slant to the original. I always felt the original was very overrated to be honest but of course it could be that deep down I've always preferred Sci-Fi to Fantasy and truth be told, I feel this one is in many ways underrated, its comedic and sci-fi elements in particular.

Now as allhallowsday full well knows, I definitely did not care for BOOGIE NIGHTS in the least. I find Wahlberg thoroughly unlikable in everything I've seen him in to date....now it might just be that he grates on me so much that I find it impossible to like stuff with him in it but honestly I found the film to be a bore too on top of that.

Cavegirl (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/cavegirl/)

Radioactive Dreams (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/radiodreams/)

I know that both of them are horrible, multiple people have told me, but I like them (a lot more than I should, apparently).

The only one I can think of right now is The Matrix: Reloaded.  I thought it was a fun movie that built off of the first one...Yeah, the cave-rave scene is long and pointless but on the whole, I really liked it.  Too bad Revolutions sucked hard.

I've said it before here, I loved Ghosts of Mars, though I know most of you here hated it.  Sure, it made no sense, and the flashback inside a flashback was a bad plot device, but I loved the action, the cast, and the soundtrack.  Plus it was a Carpenter film, and even his really bad ones are fun to watch.

I loved Boogie Nights myself, that's one of those films I can watch over and over and not get bored.  But I have to disagree with the idea of the characters forming a family.  I saw Reynold's character as being more like Fagin from Oliver Twist, a father figure who nurtures until he gets what he needs from the characters, then chucks them aside for the newest favorite.  I also thought it was some of Reynold's very best work as an actor.

Egad, but that film annoyed the living heck out of me.  I think I'd actually give it a skull.

Yeh?  What about the closing sequence?  Everybody is there, no one is left out.  There is even a new baby.  Earlier MARK WAHLBERG's character cokes out and pushes REYNOLDS to their confrontation.  He is not "chucked" out but arrogantly walks out.  I don't see REYNOLDS "chuck" anybody out (with the possible exception of the financier "Colonel" who would repulse anyone).  But in the end, where does WAHLBERG return to?  Who is comforting him?  "Mom" and "Dad."  It's not a senitmental observation, but a human one.  Think about WAHLBERG's real family in the film.
I do agree about it being REYNOLDS' best work as an actor.

I didn't love Ghosts of Mars, but I thought it was pretty entertaining, and it's better than Carpenter's overrated Assault on Precinct 13 in my opinion.

I know it has its fans, but I would say A.I. Artificial Intelligence is one I love, but lots of people hate it.

I'm surprised you know people who don't like Boogie Nights.  It's such a good movie with a tremendous cast.

Some movies I like that others don't include:

Ed Wood- I wish more people would like this, but most people I talk to have either a) never heard of it, or b) saw it and thought it was too weird.  Johnny Depp was great as Ed, Martin Landau was awesome as Bela, and Bill Murray was funny.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory- As much as I love Gene Wilder's version, I thought Burton's film was wonderful.

Big Fish- I felt the performances were wonderful, but sadly, I haven't seen too many people who have seen it.

Cannibal The Musical- Felt it was underrated, but I kinda understand if people don't like it, as it's a comedic musical with people eating each other.

Around here it's "Beginning of the END", I just love this movie, my wife's response every time I run the tape is "You're not gonna watch that piece of #$%$ again are you!" Even though this is arguably one of the worst movies ever, it still fascinates me, possibly because grasshoppers give me the willies in a real big way.

I second both of these.  I sort of understand why people don't like the Depp Willy Wonka...but didn't they know it was a movie based off of the same book as the Wider version?  Burton never claimed it was a remake of the musical.

Big Fish was a great old school Burton film...y'know back before he was going to remake/reimagine other movies.

Look at some of the responses; at least two people commented upon not liking it, but I think the film is very good, and as you wrote, with "a trememdous cast."

Though my avatar might lead you to think I love the GENE WILDER flick, I only love parts of it.  I am mixed on most of TIM BURTON's work, but I found his CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY interesting.
And I love ED WOOD

I enjoyed BOOGIE NIGHTS. I'm surprised to hear that many didn't!

I like this one too. Of course...I also like...
The HORRORS of SPIDER ISLAND. I mean...not only in a 'So bad it's good" way. I really like it. I like idea of being on an island with a buncha ditzy, big breasted, frightened women.
Iv'e noticed many people don't like MARS ATTACKS. I LOVE MARS ATTACKS! I mean...what's not to like? It's stupid, unreal, and lotsa fun! And Tom Jones sings a cool song! Also...all the big name actors get wasted!

I'm not alone :teddyr: I liked the visuals and ideas in this movie, it just does such a good job of making something familiar (Earth) feel alien. If you can overlook the goofs it's a really good, really fun movie.

Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957)
Lost in Translation (2003)
Ed Wood (1994)

I get made fun of for watching black and white movies in general. A lot of people around here don't appreciate the classics.

Halloween 3 - it's so weird, I love it.  It ain't Halloween until I've watched that movie.

Jason X - some people absolutely detest this movie, but I just think it's a blast.  Lexa Doig is probably the strongest female lead of any of the Friday movies.

Starship Troopers 2 - I think most people hate this because they were expecting it to be a big budget blockbuster.  Personally, for what it is, I think it's very well done.  Good characters, interesting plot, plenty of icky gross stuff.

Dracula 3000 - what can I say, all the criticism aimed at it is well deserved, but I still find it entertaining.

For years, real live people have insisted that I'm the only person in the world who likes Mad Max. It's a different story on the internet, where it seems everybody finds it hard to believe that I've never met anybody who likes it. Weird.

Out in real life, away from my computer, I've met a couple of people who like Galaxy of Terror, but they really, really don't like to talk about it, especially not with me.

Timbo Hines' WOTW - Now, this one, I'm pretty sure about being the only fan. Kinda' makes me disappointed that Chrome never came to fruition, & I'd really like to find a copy of Bug Wars despite reports that the few who have seen it haven't been able to sit through it. And yet, those darned Polonia brothers seem to have their own franchise.

I think alot of people automatically think of the Wilder version first, and forget there's a book it's based off of.  I think both worked well, offering different interpretations of the same source material.

I'm surprised you know people who don't like Boogie Nights.  It's such a good movie with a tremendous cast.

I quite liked the Wilder version of Wonka.  But I loved Depp's version as well.  I grew up a fan of Burton, having seen Pee Wee's Big Adventure and Beetlejuice when I was five, and Edward Scissorhands and Batman at 6.  Only thing of his I haven't really enjoyed was Planet of the Apes.

I found Burton's PLANET OF THE APES remake in Wal-Mart's cheap bin for $5 so I decided to take a chance and picked it up (it was the full special edition, haven't watched it yet though and I'm still very wary as I love the original APES films so very much and of course, it also stars Marky Mark).

I also love some of the films already mentioned here by others including Burton's other films (I've like all those I've seen to date including CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and ED WOOD).  I also liked HALLOWEEN III.

I don't want to derail the thread...just wanted to quickly add...

Another salute here for HALLOWEEN III.  Any fan of those Quatermass films should dig this film, depsite it's resorting to some Hollywoody slasher crap now and then.

They don't have it too many places, but whenever I get wind of a club running a "movieoke" night, I pull out my rendition of Conal Cochran explaining his plan to Dr Challis.  "...you thought no further than the strange custom of having your children wear masks and go out begging for candy."

Carpenter said his plan was to release a "Halloween" film each year with a different horror story, sort of a running anthology.  The fact that the common denominator audiences couldn't wrap their brains around a "Halloween" film sans Michael Myers doomed the flick.  I've always believed that if they had just gone with the SEASON OF THE WITCH title, we'd all be living in a different world.

Dan O'Herlihy is fantastic as Cochran, bringing the role a nice mixture of grandfatherish charm and bone-chilling villainy.  And Tom Atkins...well, as usual, he is THE MAN!

That jingle...that damnable Silver Shamrock jingle....They sure had a bead on American culture with the whole marketing blitz nightmare.  Amazingly, on this point, the film seems more timely now than it did twenty years ago.  In fact, I think I'll post that montage in the favorite montage thread!

I saw in searching there was a thread for HALLOWEEN III, but it was so full of unmitigated and rather ignorant hate, I'd rather chime in here, where there seems a little more fondness for it.

Now back to thread in progress....

Your comments definitely belong here, but looking at the old thread about HALLOWEEN III you mentioned, I should point out that not everybody hated it (though there were some just dopey and offensive comments.)  I admit that I've become quite a fan of the original HALLOWEEN (it's damned well made) a film which holds up well, and the problems it has become less and less important with repeated viewing.
I saw HALLOWEEN III in the theatre when it was new.  I did not like it.  At all.  Perhaps I need to give it another chance.

As it stands - AHD, I really liked Boogie Nights ;  Soylent, I really really hate Battlefield Earth ; Jase, I didn't hate Alien 3, I enjoyed Alien Resurrection, the only part I liked about Robocop 2 was the montage of scenes where the various Robocop follow-ups all malfunctioned (the best being the part with the Robocop that takes off it's own faceplate, screams, then falls over), didn't like Highlander II in either incarnations, I could live without the Tim Burton Planet of the Apes, and I still haven't seen AVP ; Andrew, I still haven't seen Radioactive Dreams (though I've wanted to get around to it for a few years now) or Cavegirl ; Skool, I wanted to like Reloaded but it just seemed like the movie was insistent upon me not doing so (and I still haven't seen Revolutions) ; Lester, still haven't gotten around to seeing either Closer or Happiness ; Snivelly, I gotta side with the majority on this one and voice my displeasure for Ghosts of Mars, despite being a Jason Statham fan ; Pilgermann, I haven't seen A.I. yet ; Happy, I love Ed Wood, I love Cannibal the Musical (so much so that I once built a snowman named Beowulf), and I've seen neither Big Fish nor Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ; Dennis, I've yet to see Beginning of the End ; RC, I have to side with most of bad movie society in my dislike for Horrors of Spider Island (:tongueout:) ; Threnody, I've yet to see Attack of the Crab Monsters but I really enjoyed the sickly sweetness of Lost in Translation ; Jack, Halloween III is one of my "secret shame" love movies, Jason X was better than I thought it would be, and I've yet to see either of your other picks ; LilCerb, I was raised on Mad Max flicks, but I've yet to see Galaxy of Terror.

They probably meant directed by Spielberg.  Gremlins was directed by Joe Dante, Spielberg was producer.

I seem to be the only person who likes Stargate.  Whatever Roland Emmerich's later transgressions, he'll always have that one good movie to his name.

I'd build a snowman named Beowulf, but we've only had like, one inch of snow so far this year, not that I'm complaining.

Jason X was very underrated in my opinion.  But most people I know hate it.  I give the writers some credit for attempting something other than having kids show up to a camp that by all accounts should have been shut down by the state and burned to the ground.

I like Gremlins, I don't really meet too many people who say, "Hey have you ever seen Gremlins?"  In fact, in that World Series of Pop Culture show asked a question about listing all the Spielberg films, and Gremlins wasn't on their list!!! :hatred:
Well, GREMLINS was directed by JOE DANTE... but Exec Prod was SPIELBERG.  I love GREMLINS.  It is a superb film... all about children.  "You teach them to watch television!"

They probably meant directed by Spielberg.  Gremlins was directed by Joe Dante, Spielberg was producer.

Both of you, thanks, I didn't know that, I must have not been paying attention during the opening credits, I'm not surprised by that fact.  You each get karma for those pieces of info

Just read Andrew's review of Jeepers Creepers and I must say, I loved it's little socks off.  It's one of the scariest movies I've ever seen.  Same with Creepers 2.

I didn't know that awful news about Victor Salva though and I'm glad I didn't when I first saw the movie.  But that won't stop me from loving them both or believing that purchasing them was a good move.

Aww...thats OK...I'll keep all the SPIDER ISLAND chicks for myself...!  :twirl:

I enjoyed Spider Island as well, though them was some DUMB broads. I enjoyed Mesa of Lost Women also, which gets little love, and I believe I am one of only three fans of Phantom of the Paradise. I am possibly the only one on this board who has ever seen Twice Upon a Time, the George Lucas-produced cartoon from 1983; at least no one in memory has ever responded when I've praised it. And I may very well be the lone fan of Robin Williams's Popeye.

I just LOVED Mad Max!  It's so 80s!!  *lol*

And it put Australia on the map film making wise.  You gotta be proud.

That's ROBERT ALTMAN'S POPEYE (and it is a mess... or is it?  I love ALTMAN so I should revisit this; haven't seen it since it was new.)
And I bought my own copy of HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND because of my friend (the one-nostril snot blower) BELA's recommendation.  Thanks, BELA.  Thanks a lot.
I really enjoy PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE each new viewing.  PAUL WILLIAMS remains largely underappreciated and underrated as a musician.

I haven't seen it yet, but the five or six people I know who have seen it all enjoyed it. So, you need feel alone no longer Derf.

And I may very well be the lone fan of Robin Williams's Popeye.

And this is one that my father and I are the only two people I know who actually had fun with it. It's a mess, but it's such a trippy, bizarre mess that I just can't hate it!  :teddyr:

I noticed that nobody's backing me up on either of my choices from the front page of the thread though. That's okay, when it comes to those two, I'm used to being the only one willing to sit in front of the TV.  :tongueout:

Okay, okay: Robert Altman's Popeye. I just figured it would be easier all around to identify it with the star's name; I know Williams didn't write, direct or produce it. And mainly I enjoy it for the look and feel of the film. The story is so-so, but it is wonderful to look at; there's always something interesting to catch a peek of.

Good to see POTP get some positive marks. I saw it in the theater way back when, and hadn't really heard much positive about it.

I saw Popeye in the cinema, having been a big fan of the cartoon when I was a kid.  I also loved its little socks off!  I'd forgotten it even existed until you guys mentioned it.  I tried finding it in the shops here, but had no luck.  I might have to get it from Amazon if they have it and then get a multi region DVD player.

I haven't seen Phantom, but with all the recommendations, I'll give it a go.

Weell...

I liked The Village.

(spoilers)

I know everyone and there brother seems to bash it, but I thought it was a good film.  They're all focused on how they guessed the "twist" of film.  They all KNEW the monsters were fake, so they thought the rest of the film sucked.  Well, I figured the monsters were fake, but to me, that's not really the point of the film.  The point to me is how even in a society away from the modern world, you still can't escape human nature (ie jealousy and murder).  And I thought it was neat how they had a twist in the story where it's the GIRL who's trying to save the guy for a change (and the way she outwits her attacker was good as well.)

(end spoilers)

Super Mario Bros

Lots of people bash this film.  Yes, it's nothing like the game (or the cartoon), but I thought it had some fun moments, and there are far worse films that deserve ridicule than this film.

Bloody Birthday

I dunno.. there's just something about how unPC and "never would this be made today" that I just really like about this movie.  Course, I've always had this unhealthy fascination with "kids who kill" films...

5th element : not many seemed to 'get' it when it came out, still only know 2 people who like it.

hercules in new york : my secret shame movie :teddyr:

soldier : kurt russell film, doesn't say alot but i think thats the point of what he was in it, and the battles listed on his arm reference 'blade runner'

highlander 2 : DC makes more sense, but its mere coincidence that the actors and characters have the same names, lol, not good in the highlander franchise but not a terrible movie if you forget it is

equilibrium : slightly different this one, seems to garner a preconception of 'just more matrix style gunplay', but the story is very 'Fahrenheit 451' imo, i blame marketing

i prob have more but this will do for now

I loved Boogie Nights as well.  I really don't care for Very Long movies, I get bored really fast.  I also enjoyed Ed Wood, now if I would have watched it a few years before I knew about Plan 9 from Outer Space, I probably would have watched in a been like WTF?  Howard the Duck is another one that a lot of people didn't like, but everyone I knew who hated it, read the comics.  Highlander II wasn't that bad, but it was still out there.  There is one movie I know that my dad will not watch is the Rocky Horror Picture Show, he told me once that he went to a showing of it in the theaters with people dressed up and he said that was enough for him.

The last two that comes to mind are The Godfather Part III, and Rocky V.  A co worker of mine hates this films with a passion, so I rarely talk about them at all at work, but I think they were good films to watch.

In my little collection of bad cinema there is a movie called Preyliens: Alien Predators. It's a Z-grade movie that was probably shot with a camcorder and features such set design as Toolshed: The Cargo Hold, Livingroom: Main Controls and Styrofoam: Alien Ruins. The creatures consist of three puppets and a guy dressed in assorted costume parts. The acting is terrible, the dialoge laughable. ("That tree in the words when first you came upon me.") and the music strained. It does, however, hold the most hilarious death scenes you could ever hope to watch.

Every person I've shown this movie to shuns me for about a week after.

I liked The Rocketeer! Jennifer Connelly was hot and the 30's look and feel was cool. Plus I loved how Timothy Dalton's character was a none too subtle dig at Errol Flynn.

Films I like that few, if any, people also seem to like:

Grease 2
The Pirate Movie
Wing Commander
The Three Amigos

I'm fairly fond of The Three Amigos. I went to this ranch in Tucson where they filmed quite a few westerns, don't remember the name, and the tour guide had to keep pointing out locations that were used in The Three Amigos. The way he talked about them, however, I'm fairly certain he was not fond of the film in the slightest and would much rather be talking about John Wayne movies.

I got a kick out of that.

Never heard of The Pirate Movie, but I'll be damned if I can understand what you see in Wing Commander my friend. I mean, I did see something in it, but then I realized it was an eye booger that had gotten into my line of vision and I quickly wiped it away.

Decent flick.  Watch the dvd regularly.  You should check out the sequel.  The zord fight at the end is great, because they did it the way it's done on the tv show, with a guy in a costume fighting another guy in a costume.  Not all cgi like in MMPR: The Movie.  Reminded me of Godzilla, which added to the appeal for me.

That wasn't Austin St. John in the porno thing.  It's some other actor who looks similar to him.  The original red ranger still does martial arts, and is an EMT.

Here's mine:
The Matrix Trilogy: I love them all, I can't really think of anything I'd change if I could.

Star Wars episodes 4-6: Love them all, not REAL fond of the whole Ewok thing, , but I'm cool with it. .

I also liked Boogie nights, , I do like "Wonderland" better though.

I'm 'ok' with "Battlefield Earth", , moreso than most others, , but not really to a level of overtly "liking" it.

Tank Girl is one I hear a bunch of complaints about, , but I like it. It's mindless fun, and seems like it's made with people with ADD in mind.

MIB II: I know there's quite a few that despise Will Smith, but I liked him in both those movies, but nobody seems to like II.

Boondock Saints: I aboslutely love this movie, , but so many people hate it, especially those that try to compare it to Tarantino's work, which frankly, I feel it beats hands-down.

Jackass 1 & 2: Juvenile, stupid, immoral, exploitive, deviant, ignorant, perverse, and usually dangerous, , but the most of that crap is funny to me.

"The Adventures of Ford Fairlane", , I like that one, , but I know many people don't.

The latest "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is one I like and watch occasionally, I've been a fan of the books for decades now. I just don't think a movie has to stick exactly to the book (or the radio show for that matter) to be enjoyable. I've watched it with people that spent the whole time pointing out what was removed, and where it deviated from the books/radio show. BFD, it was fun anyways.

p.s. I'm one of those that didn't like "The Three Amigos"

I don't know how old you are, but I guess it's dependant upon age.  I was born in '84 and started watching cartoons about the time the first TMNT toon came on, so I grew up a fan of that.  Then I was about 9 or so when MMPR came on, so it worked out getting to watch Power Rangers then flipping to CBS and seeing the turtles.

I liked all three Turtle flicks.  At least the 3rd brought back Casey Jones.

Here's mine:

Tank Girl is one I hear a bunch of complaints about, , but I like it. It's mindless fun, and seems like it's made with people with ADD in mind.

I also liked Tank Girl. Of course, I'd never read the comic before I saw the movie, so I had no expectations going into it. I forced some friends to watch it once, and they laughed all the way through it. Afterward, they claimed it was horrible and that they didn't like it. Go figure.

Glad to see there's other fans of the MMPR movie.  I grew up with that flick.

With all this talk about MMPR movie, I'm thinking about putting it in my Netflix queue and watching it sometime.  I grew up on Power Rangers and other shows and such, so maybe it will help with feel like a kid again.

Yeah, I pop the dvd now and then.  I have that and the sequel, plus some Ninja Turtle dvd's.  My favorite was when the Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers teamed up in 1998.  That was a fanboy's wet dream right there. :teddyr:

I have the first two Ninja Turtles movies on DVD and I'm going to get rid of the second DVD soon, since I ended up not liking that movie at all.

I liked the first TMNT film, but I wouldn't call myself a huge fan of the series, I liked to watch it now and then.  Now my one cousin, he was obsessed with TMNT back in the day so this ended being his favorite film.

I was born in '85, so I'm 22 right now, but will be 23 in a few months.

We're about the same age then.  I dunno.

I was a huge TMNT fan.  And PR.

Never got into Star Wars/Star Trek though, so this is my version of that I suppose.

I was born a Hudson Hawk man and I'll die a Hudson Hawk man. I've only known 1 other person who liked that film, and I probably would have married her for that alone except she was way out of my league. At the time, of course.

I quite liked the Dawn remake.  Thought it worked well overall.

Plus any movie that ends with Richard Cheese doing a lounge version of Disturbed's "Down With The Sickness" gets a thumbs up in my book.

There's something oddly charming about Hudson Hawk. I bought the DVD and like to break it out every so often just to get a groan out of my fiancee. The only thing I didn't like about the movie were the scenes of Bruce Willis and Danny Aiello singing, but other than that I like the movie! The lines, the timing, the slapstick, it's all so much fun!

Mystery Men- Such a good little underrated movie with a great cast.  Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy are a trio of superheroes with limited superpowers.  Then they recruit a bunch of lesser heroes to team with them.

I think I posted it earlier, but I'm not certain.  Either way a good flick worth checking out.

Guy Pearce was great in this movie. Its just to bad not many people know about it. And if they hear about it they think its just a nasty horror movie, but theres alot more to it then just the horror movie stuff.

RoboCop.

I have never met another human being who can even sit through thirty minutes of RoboCop, but I consider it to be as close to the perfect movie as any movie can be.

I'm also rather fond of Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer, though even my friends who like 80s cartoons can't stand it.

I've always been rather fond of C.H.U.D.  I can't believe they are remaking it.  I didn't think anyone really liked this movie but me.  There are people that say it's OK, it's terrible, it wasn't bad but it wasn't good, exc.  But I loved this movie.

I actually liked Halloween III more than any of the other movies in the series.  Yes, I know, blasphemy.  In response, a song by Overkill comes to mind ("We don't care what you say ....").

I was always fond of Squirm and Slugs.  No CGI here.  I really appreciate that.  Squirm is one of those fond childhood memory movies.  I remember seeing the VHS (DVDs were not invented yet) box cover of a skull covered with worms when I went to the local rental establishment with my dad.  I was probably six or seven.  I pointed at it and wanted to see it.  So did dad. Se we rented it.

Pieces is another.  I saw it when I was eight.  I wouldn't say this one is anything spectacular, but I enjoyed it.  Why the Hell did I see Pieces when I was only eight?  I guess I was privileged.  The other day I heard a little girl ask her mom if she could watch a rated PG-13 movie.  I almost choked on my time with laughter because I grew up watching rated R movies.  You know what did ... nothing, other than shape my taste in movies later in life.  Are parent's stricter in what they let their kids watch today compared to the early seventies and eighties.  I remember talking to other classmates in grade school about movies that mostly like would not be discussed in grade school today.    Shoot, I remember when PG-13 wasn't even a rating.  It went from PG straight to R.  I think I may have gotten off topic on another tangent and I am suppose to be studying for the Regulation section of the CPA exam I am taking tomarrow.  I better get back to that.

Jersey Girl- People wish it'd burn in hell.  I quite liked it.  Then again, anytime you have a father yelling at his kid it's hilarious.  :teddyr:

Party Monster- Okay, nobody seems to have seen this.  Then the one or two who have don't.  Macauly Culkin and Seth Green star in it, and it's about Michael Alig, a member of the Club Kids of the '80s who killed somebody.  Based on a true story.

SLC Punk- starring Matthew Lillard, Christopher MacDonald (who's underrated in everything), and Devon Sawa.

A guilty pleasure I usually deny liking...but secretly do...the MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS movie.
I feel funny talking about it...it's like-I dunno-revealing a disgusting sex fetish or something.

Actually, the guy played the original red ranger did gay porn later on, so I guess it could be consider a sex fetish if you were stretching it... no innuendo intended.

:bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: Crude Karma for you!

I’ve been skimming through our answers, though I should give them all a read as the thread really fits this site perfectly.

There's a recurring issue that we need to acknowledge, even if it seems common sense to the point of irrelevance, so I'm happy if I'm not the first to point it out here;

YOUR AGE AFFECTS YOUR PERCEPTION OF A MOVIE!

This is particularly true of cartoons/games given the live action treatment.

Yes, I loved Popeye and TMNT 2 because at the time there was never a bad place for a giant octopus (Goonies being the exception that proves the rule) and, at the time, Vanilla Ice was fun to roller-skate to.

Pubic Hair changes your taste in movies, it must, as does paying the rent. So with that said, I'm going to nominate a fitting double feature.

The Blair Witch Project recalled, for better and worse, by Cloverfield

Really, if you don't enjoy these experiences for anything but motion sickness, you have only yourself to blame. You have to know what you're looking for, and what you're getting into (or rather, in the case of the former, NOT know what you're getting into) before you sit down. Though maybe these two are exceptions that prove the rule as well, because they stand out for being criticized for annoying casts. Granted, we're being sold the illusion of a documenterary, but since when are unsympathetic characters a problem when you sit down to watch mayhem?

.the SCREAMING SKULL-yes...I LOVE this zero budget piece-o-drek. It's a childhood nightmare come true. A skull that follows you around. And the handyman...must be Torgo's brother.
.FRANKENSTEIN and the MONSTER from HELL-Why is this movie so maligned?  Because of the weird hairy, eyeless monster?
That's part of what,for me,makes it GREAT!

I absolutely, irreparably love and adore The Turkish Wizard of Oz.  Yes: TURKISH Wizard of Oz.

Major parts of it make no sense, it is all done on the cheap to the nth degree, they made Scarecrow camp it up, Dorothy looks a tad older than Judy Garland was and the Wicked With seems to be standing on a reverb pedal for all her scenes...not to mention the actual Wizard looks like Merlin more than the character in the 1939 film.

BUT...

This is such a hypnotically bad film and so badly made and has so many unnecessary dance scenes (not as many singing scenes as there are just dance scenes) that it's impossible to not watch this and fall in love with every facet of it.

There are those who disagree I know (hello, Tars Tarkas!), but hey, individuality is what makes the world go around!!

And now, a brief interlude:

It seems like you-all hate WOODY ALLEN.  I am not a fan of his early films, and really am a bit young for WOODY's classic comedies.  But in the 1980s, WOODY started making more thoughtful, character-driven (rather than gag-driven) films.  Today, I heard yet another rendition of "Bewitched," probably my favorite song, and when I hear it, I always think of HANNAH AND HER SISTERS, perhaps my favorite film.  WOODY made a number of great films in these years, particularly THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO and CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, with MARTIN LANDAU in his Oscar-nominated performance (yeh, once-in-a-while they get it right).  Okay, I will not get into politics or religion, the unspoken contexts of all WOODY ALLEN films and discussions about his films, but he still made many good, funny films.

I simply adore "The Wiz" and "Return to Oz".  I've met some fans of "Return to Oz" but no one else has ever liked "The Wiz".

I know "Lifeforce" tends to get a bad rap but I find it weirdly fascinating. It's actually the best melding of the horror and Sci-Fi genres that I've seen.

Karma for you!!! Lifeforce is awesome!
I like LIFEFORCE...

Yah, you Lifeforce-likers.  I know what you're all about.    I have a Joe Walsh song for you, uh-huh (uh huh) uh-huh what it is...

I liked Mars Attacks!  too.  My favorite part was the vision of what was left after the world was wiped out:  Tom Jones and a MARIACHI BAND!

Super Mario Brothers -- Saw this when I was younger and, for some reason, have never been able to fault it. It's a bad movie, but I don't care. I do like the cartoon series better, but that's another story.

Feardotcom -- not that I really like this movie, but I don't mind it. I've never met another person who had anything nice to say about it.

Fritz the Cat -- this movie has a strange rap; some people seem to like it in a nostalgic sort of way; however, many bash it for being pretentious and abrasive. I actually like the movie a lot, it's quite a trip.

I really wanna see that. Have you seen the sequel?

The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat isn't all that good, as it didn't involve any of the original people, just the producers who owned the name -- Neither Robert Crumb nor Ralph Bakshi were part of the production.
If you want to see a good Ralph Bakshi cartoon -- and this is on-topic, as many people on this board don't care for Ralph -- try to get the British cut of Heavy Traffic(1973).  Most versions in this country are the watered-down American "R" version, but the version that played in Europe on the big screen was uncensored.  I'm told that there is a mostly-uncensored DVD out now, but all the VHS versions I've seen cut some key scenes.

This is one of those threads where the fear of ridicule wars against one's desire to speak up for underrated underdog (or just unfairly maligned) cinema.  But I've been reading and, if my fellow Bad-movie-orgers are brave enough to admit watching (and liking) the likes of Josie and The p***ycats I guess it's time for me to step up. . *deep breath* .  . and admit. .

My Name is Kester Pelagius and I liked SHOWGIRLS.  That movie was hilarious.

I also like(d) FAIRY TALES, CREEPOZOIDS, HYBRID, STAR CRYSTAL, CREATURE, THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME, EVENT HORIZON, PROJECT SHADOWCHASER 3000, THE TERROR WITHIN I & II, DEATHSTALKER, CONQUEST, BREEDERS (1986), BREEDERS (1995), BARBARIAN QUEEN, LEPRECHAUN 4: IN SPACE, TROLL, ZOMBIE LAKE, BEOWULF (Christopher Lambert), GIA, 2069: A SEX ODYSSEY, GALAXY OF TERROR, FORBIDDEN WORLD, KEKKO KAMEN, INSEMINOID, WING COMMANDER and........

As for LIFEFORCE, that is a classic, what's not to like?

I enjoyed Creepozoids but don't want to see it again any time soon. I know it got a 'Skull' rating on this site but G.I Samurai isn't too bad a film despite the weird scenes where Sonny Chiba and his Samurai ally ride around a beach to a romantic disco ballad. The cinematography and action scenes are well done. Also, I find the Bond film Moonraker to be a lot of fun. It is outrageously corny but the action sequences are pretty exciting. It's actually a better Star Wars cash-in than the Flash Gordon movie.

I only recently saw SHAUN OF THE DEAD. I loved it although I was slightly disappointed the humor eventually gave way to the expected all out zombie horror movie assault.

Kester, let's sit back and look at some horribly disliked films... can we start with EVENT HORIZON?    :teddyr:

BUGS with Ashley Judd

That is the only one I can think of right now.

For liking Showgirls you have earned Karma.  I loved it in a way as well.  I'm going to give it the MST3K treatment when I get in better health.

I haven't, but I heard that it doesn't continue the story of the first movie, instead it puts together a bunch of skits from different time periods with the character in it.

It's on my to do list, but Fritz sent me for such a loop I had to watch some wholesome torture porn to get me stable again.

Why not.  I do have it on DVD.  Granted it looked better on the big screen.  Yes I saw it in the theater.   You are ALL envious.  :teddyr:
