Title: Do You Have Any Hobbies That Others Don't Understand?
Post by: Killer Bees on February 05, 2008, 12:49:16 AM
I don't know why, but people always laugh or stare at me like I'm nuts when I tell them I like knitting.

Knitting is very therapeutic and relaxing and I've made some truly beautiful things.  Right now I'm hooked on afghans (throws, blankets).  I really love putting in a lot of effort and having something beautiful and functional to show for my time.  I've made afghans for numerous people and they've loved them.  But if I mention what I do to others, they get this weird look on their face like I've just told them I love to eat worms.

I also sew very well and I've made some lovely quilts.  Again, effort = beautiful, practical, functional item that can last pretty much forever.

Now, if people ask me what I like to do I just say read and watch movies.  I do like to do those things to but not as much as I enjoy knitting.

People are weird.

Well, I like to collect certain types of toys - action figures and space ships. Most people (especially my family) tend to think of this as proof that I am somehow mentally stunted, as  that could be the only reason why a man pushing 40 would want to own such things, let alone display them.

Also, despite my large collection of dark, hideous and monstrous action figures, I do have quite a large teddy bear collection as well as other assorted stuffed animals. Again, this elicits weird looks since a man desiring such things must clearly be off his rocker.

Don't even get me started on the looks and comments I get about my sword and blade collection. You'd think I was the leader of a fanatical terrorist cell or something, the way some people respond. :teddyr:

Oh, and the rolling of eyes I get each year from people at work when they realize that I'm taking a vacation day in order to attend a Star Trek convention.

Killer Bees, you probably get weird reactions from people because knitting is assumed to be something that old women usually do.
My mom used to knit all kinds of stuff.  Especially those big afghans.
She's still got a few that she made back in the 70's.

As for me, the only hobby I like is putting together models.
The bigger the better.
My favorite models are big WW2 planes.  Several years ago, my friend's wife Charlene and I put together a huge B-17 bomber.  I'd say it was somewhere around 3 feet long and 2-3 feet wide.  (can't remember the actual dimensions)
It took us about 3 days to finish it.
I left the model over there and would come back each night until it was finished.
She's really good with painting miniatures and she did an awesome job on the control panels and the little flight crew figurines.
They looked like they were professionally painted.
When it was finished, it looked very much like this one:
(http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/102/b17bombrag0101uh3.th.jpg) (http://img525.imageshack.us/my.php?image=b17bombrag0101uh3.jpg)
(click thumbnail to see full size pic)
We painted it the same OD green.

I'd have to say that aside from planes, I like to assemble and paint tanks.
The last one I completed was a German Tiger tank which I painted it a dirty white color so it looked like it was from the Russian front.
It looks just like the one in this pic:
(http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/5626/36460007md1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Never really got into model cars as I'm not a car guy.

For me, putting together models is a calming experience.  I love the fact that you have to pay attention to the smallest details.
I used to hate painting them but now it's my favorite part.
I'll hold the piece with a pair of tweezers and delicately paint it with a fine brush.
And when the model is completed, I feel proud of myself.

The only downside to models is that they've become expensive!
I recently went to a local hobby shop and the average price of a model plane or tank was $20-$50.  Some went for over $100!
And that's not counting the cost of the paints and replacement X-acto blades etc...

Most of my friends look at me funny and say that there's no way they'd have the time or patience to do it.

From the time that my folks took me to see Sidney Lumet's Murder On The Orient Express in 1974 when I was seven, film and anything connected with that art has been my hobby. No one except my parents understood that a whole new world had opened up to me then and none of my friends understood the fascination that this visual art had for me.

I'm sure all of you understand, but those buggers back then thought I was a weirdo.

Film was my hobby, now it is my work: almost twenty years already.  :teddyr:

I've collected Indian arrowheads since I was 13.  I don't usually buy them, the joy is in the finding.  I will spend hours scouring riverbeds and lakeshores after a rain, hunting these little pointy bits of flint.  Most folks just don't understand the rush that comes with picking up a sharp stone tool and knowing you are probably the first human being to touch it since its maker lost it, 5000 years before.

People are weird.

I have never tried knitting, but I like to watch knitting when ever I get a chance. Nothing quite like watching someone knit for hours on end. If only they had a 24 Channel that focused on only knitting. That would be good.

I like collecting anime, and where I live, that tends to draw one of two responses:

1. "Dude, you're still watching cartoons at your age?"

2. "Awesome! Me too, man! Hey, can I have your copy of [some hentai or other] when you're finished wanking to it?"

To number 1 (the more common response), all I can do is argue some variation of "If you'd watch the anime yourself, you'd see that some cartoons are for adults as well as children. In fact, some are quite exclusively for adults. You don't have to be an overgrown adolescent to appreciate them. For that matter, some of our most manly men used to watch those Colonel Snafu cartoons back during World War II. Did that stunt their growth? Who started this silly notion that cartoons are only for kids anyway?"

Number 2 tends to come from guys who are overgrown adolescents. For that matter, I lay some of the blame for response number 1 on them as well. No wonder people think watching cartoons is immature: they've merely confused cause and effect when looking at these guys. It's just about impossible to get these guys to grasp that I don't have any hentai and I'm not into robots or sword-and-sorcery sagas.

I dare not even attempt to explain that my first introduction to anime was from Sailor Moon (in original Japanese, not the dumbed-down, sanitized North American dub). Just trying to get these guys past the "Dude, you must be so gay!" misconception never leaves enough capacity to deal with their second misconception, "Oh, then you must really like naked women! Come on, where's your hentai collection!?"

When the topic comes up with these boys, therefore, I generally just refer to Cowboy Bebop, Scryed, Trigun, and maybe Ayashi no Ceres (excellent series all and very manly), and let it go at that.

Ironically, Killer Bees, you'd probably fit in with the people around here better than I do. I don't know whether there are any knitting groups, but a few of the churches around here do have quilting circles and the like. I've also met several local family matriarchs who like to knit stuff for the young'uns in their spare time.

Digital television is already rolling out something like, what, 500 channels? If they don't have that knitting channel yet, Conan, they probably will in the near future.

I make jewelry. I'm hooked on doing earrings right now, but I am trying to learn a bit of fancy wire wrapping and such to do some more intricate work. Try explaining that to "manly" men. I also write poetry and music. I want to take some drawing classes, but I haven't managed the time/funds for that yet. Most of my hobbies (aside from my psycho knife and sword collection) would probably make many think I'm gay (which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if it weren't for that whole being-attracted-to-men thing, which I'm not in the least; I don't even understand how women are attracted to men).

Mostly, I'm into creating. The jewelry offers me an outlet for small, quick projects that are satisfyingly relaxing and which are appreciated by those I give them to. The poetry is mostly for my wife, though I have some that could be read by the general public without an automatic gag reflex. The music is pretty much just for me. I'm trying to learn how to use some recording software so I can have a record of the things I've written and share it with people, but I haven't managed to do it to my satisfaction yet.

I'm also into movies that few people around here understand. Someone asked me what kind of movies I liked, and when I said that I like the weird, bizarre stuff, they wanted an example. How do you explain The Forbidden Zone or even Bubba Ho-Tep to someone who has never seen it? The movies I like I like for the whole experience rather than just the plot (usually), so just telling them what happens doesn't work. Telling them about the cinematography generally gets blank stares. Talking about characterization or writing or music or acting or whatever generally has them classifying me as a film snob, which I'm not (C'mon, I own Manos and Mom & Dad Save the World).

So, like Killer Bees, I generally just tell people I read a lot.

I'm almost 53 and I have a pretty good collection of Star Trek stuff (toys, action figures, Hallmark Ornaments), but I've never been to a convention. My daughter calls me a "closet trekkie".

I also like to build models , mostly Star Trek but  I do some other stuff too. Actually modeling help you learn some artistic skills like using an airbrush or painting with a brush.

The hardest one for people to understand is my penchant for watching terrible old movies.

So far, all the hobbies mentioned here seem very normal to me.

I used to collect Franklin Mint porcelain dolls and plates, but they don't sell FM in Australia any more and the American website says they don't ship overseas due to credit card fraud      I'm annoyed, but I guess it just keeps me from spending money like it's going out of style.

It's important to have something to do that relaxes you.  I know I would be a basket case if I couldn't unwind with my knitting or sewing at the end of the day.  So no matter what's going on in my life, I can think about the current project I'm on and what I need to do next and it makes me feel calm.

I'm with Shadow and the other toy collectors.  I have numerous action figures and toys ranging from grotesque looking demons and monster to plush versions of the Muppets.  I've had to cut back due to display room and lack of petty cash but I hope to get a bigger house one day with a display room.   My wife luckily is accpeting of this hobby.  She has a collection of her own.  :teddyr:
I also enjoy collecting odd collector cards like Wacky Packages, Garbage Pail Kids and various movie cards.  I'm also a huge fan of Mad Magazine and collect them as well.

I also enjoy pickling/drying hot peppers and onions.  I refuse to buy spice from the supermarket as long as I can grow the produce and make it myself.

Of course I enjoy writing and watching lousy movies as Nate pointed out for himself.

I see we have a few model builders in the house, I to build models mostly 1:35 scale military and N Scale trains.

Derf - believe it or not I use to do wire work jewelry I still have tons of stones, wires etc, just don't have time to do it anymore. I have all the bending pliers, tools and other stuff.

Other than that I collect weird stuff, old can labels, old cone top beer cans, old tin signs, any thing old really, antiques, coins, paper money, stamps ... just to much stuff. I really think I have a addiction to collecting what I consider "cool" stuff. I also collect art, and as an artist I like to support local artist or artist that make really unique pieces.

Oh and I collect B-Movies too.

I'm a collector.  Non-collectors don't understand though most people seem to have a least a bit of the pack-rat in them (the only difference between "collectors" and "pack-rats" is that collectors categorize...)   :teddyr:
I collect vintage paper, lots of old Halloween, 50s and 60s space toys, 60s and 70s monster toys, TV memorabilia... I have too much stuff, really, and a room devoted to it, and much more space taken in my office, basement and garage.  I had a huge collection of golden age postcards, but only have the cream of the crop left.  I was a record collector (as in vinyl) and I still collect recordings but gave up 90% of my records over 10 years ago (could kick myself).  It's also true that I have very few people to share any interest with much of the music I listen to.

Bad movies has to be my biggest one, but I do often make an effort to describe why I like watching an all-midget western, or seeing Hasselhoff swing a lightsaber as he fights stop motion robots.

I also play Warhammer and Warhammer 40k, miniature-based tabletop games.  For 40K, which is a science fiction (lasers and aliens) game, I do a good bit of conversion work on some models.  I play the bug-eyed aliens, which have living tanks and such.  Here is one that I did a lot of work on, everything dark green I made from "green stuff" putty:

Further images:

http://www.badmovies.org/wh40k/tyranids/shoggoth6.jpg (http://www.badmovies.org/wh40k/tyranids/shoggoth6.jpg)

Knives, but only in the way of "what is the best tool?"  The K-Bar is beloved of the USMC, but I tend to break them.  I have two that I am proud of:  my Mission MPT and a Busse Satin Jack Tac.  Both are incredibly tough knives.

My love of old C-64 computer games gets some looks.  Especially from my nephews or other kids raised on PS2 and newer game systems.

My love of Lego often gets strange looks.  However, you have to understand that, for the most part, the people I interact with every day are Marines.  The friends I pal around with usually have diverse interests.

That's a pretty cool lookin' creature Andrew.
Did you just do the green parts or the whole thing?

I have several friends who are also into Warhammer and Warhammer 40k.
They've shown me how to play and I got to play a few games in the past.  Got my butt kicked!
It is fun but unfortunately, it's quite an expensive hobby.
A little too expensive for my tastes.
My friends who're into it have invested hundreds of dollars.

One hobby is of course the movies, especially lame terrible ones.  This is of course quite often met with odd looks from people who don't know me well, but I'm lucky enough to have a large team of bad movies fans for friends who share my equally terrible taste in movies.  Still, I haven't had the heart to subject them to Gigli yet...

The other one is also figurines.  I tend to like movie/anime/tv show/videogame based ones, and at one time had a stash that I kept on my dashboard which included:

Frank the Bunny from Donnie Darko
A Happy Tree Friend figure [The army one]
Moe from the Simpsons
Astro Boy
The tank from the original Ghost in the Shell movie
Buddy Christ
Blanka from Street Fighter II
Raiden from Metal Gear Solid 2
Rodimus Prime from the original transformers movie
A Jawa and Boba Fett.

Phew!!!!!  It's great because a friend gave me these small red leds for the car and at night they light up in a very creepy way, Franks' face.  I would take a photo but I took them off so that they don't melt since we be in summer, but its' starting to cool again so maybe my army can return...  I have more of course, but my dashboard is only so big really...

I used to collect comic book statues and busts, Mostly Marvel, but it got very expansive and I quite it. Now if I go to a comic convention I will pick something up. I collect fliers from shows mostly punk ones. I also collect vinyl and cassette but I wouldn't really say collect as alot of underground punk band still put and 7" and 12" records and they have cassette of their demos. I don't get crazy and go to record shows and such. I used to collect Anime stuff but that just stopped completely.

I also volunteer for punk shows on Saturdays which people don't get as I work for "Free". Still Its a hobby.  :teddyr:

I collect old papaerback books, movie reference books,,some old comics...(mostly Marvel MONSTERS on the PROWL type of comics and SGT.FURY AND HIS HOWLING COMMANDOS), weird monster movie or Sci Fi stuff from the 50's 60's and 70's ( aprize being an old Castle films FRANKENTEIN meets the WOLFMAN Super 8 reel) ...but mostly old monster mvie mags and any monster movie books.

3 of my latest aquistions ....(won on ebay...)

HORROR of PARTY BEACH photo comic from Warren pub...circa 1964...

from the mid 60's...the FRANKENSCIENCE MONSTER- A compilation of articales on Boris Karloff edited by Forrest (the Ackermonster) J. Ackerman!!!

...and a dime novel from the 30's of CHANDU the MAGICIAN with yours truly-uh-I mean Bela Lugosi gracing the cover!

...my mag collection has become quite large...I have over 100 mags dating from 1959 (a JOURNAL of FRANKENSTEIN mag...it was the forerunner of the later Castle of Frankenstein mags ) into the seventies.

One I regret having lost a few years back was this one:

It's an old Warren Publishing mag...kinda in the Playboy vein called AFTER HOURS.

It was made in 1958...and most of the mag was handed over to FJ Ackerman and he basically loaded it with monster and sci-fi film articales...kinda a dry run for FAMOUS MONSTERS #1 . I happened to luck out and find one at a flea market for $1.00.

Iv'e seen it sell on ebay for over $3000 bucks. THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS.

I sent my copy to Micheal Weldon in  some years back so he could use it in to do a photospread for his mag PSYCHOTRONIC VIDEO. The articale appears, with my name and  credit in #37.

Well...Mr.Weldon never sent my mag back. And later on he went belly up and cancelled my freashly paid for sub renewal. Whatta shmuck.  :hatred:

I'd be up After Hours if somebody ripped off my treasure like that...  :hatred:
I scanned these for you BELA... In the early 70s I had gazed at the back issues longingly that were advertised for sale in the few issues of any Warren publication, but I never bought any of the back issues (then).  I collected them in the mid 80s, grabbing them for the covers (my goal was to collect the first 50 issues only of CREEPY and EERIE, didn't finish, but I acquired the covers I really loved).  I converted a closet into storage shelves, so many of my magazines are handy:

That CHANDU is a real treasure!

I have some old Creepy's and Eeries too...the Vampirellas are worth BIG bucks nowadays. I love the Uncle Creepy mask!   Like Cheezy, my step mom and Dad sold or trashed all my mags when I ran from home in the late 70's...so Iv'e been slowly buying whatta ever I can over the years...before I learned how to use a computer about two years ago,I would find them at yard sales and flea markets on occasion.
Your right about 'collecters'...most people think I'm nuts wasting time and money on usless old 'junk'...but I don't actually spend a lot of cash on 'em...I just snag up deals from people who consider the stuff 'junk!'

I have a rather extensive collection of Bettie Page stuff, books, films, DVD's, original photos, old pin up mags. I also have a complete run of Heavy Metal magazine and a few other cult magazines.

Thinking about it I have WAY to much stuff. And it's not getting any better, I've had the flu the last couple of days with a 102 fever and I laid here in my chair buying cool and weird crap off the internet and ebay ... my wife said she was going to take my laptop away as when I don't feel good she says I comfort shop.

I have many hobbies people give me looks for.

1. Japanese anime.
Since 1992 with my introduction to Japanese anime through stuff such as Guvyer, Ranma 1/2, and Bubblegum Crisis, all which was initially accidental cause of my brother watching these one time in the same as me while I was playing a video game, I've been a major collector of anime and have many DVDs and tapes littering the entertainment room of the house.

2. Horror and sci-fi movies.
When I hit 18 in 1997 I decided that I would watch all the horror/sci-fi horror films I recall seeing in rental stores I couldn't see cause my parents were the super strict kind of parents about that. (Of course as a small child I used to be afraid to go through those sections of the video stores) The result became that I ended up eventually buying tons of late 70s, 1980s, and early 90s horror and sci-fi films on tape (or DVD if available on it) Aside from the video stores getting rid of many of their VHS tapes and stuff it was because I guess I started hating re-renting stuff I liked and felt buying it would be better. So...yeah, I've got a lot of movies along with anime which I get some nagging on from my parents on.
I have my own rental store practically.

3. Video games.
From my childhood introduction to the original Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985 to the present. I've amassed a ton of games and game systems. Most are in storage, but every once in a while I dig one of the older ones out to play for nostalgic reasons. I own a NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, N64, PSX, PS2, XBOX, XBOX 360, GBA, Nintendo DS, and Wii. You don't even wanna know how many games I have with all those systems combined. O_o My reasons being aside from loving playing older games is I look at selling them at places like GameStop as kind of a waste since you hardly get anywhere near what you paid for them in the first place.

4. Action figures.
To this day I hate that I was so rough with my toys as a child as I had quite a few things people seem willing to pay insane amounts of money for nowadays on places like eBay. Today I've collected a TON of figures with the oldest ones I have (not counting the ARAH G.I.Joe stuff I bought off aforementioned eBay recently) being Transformers Beast Wars stuff. Other then that, I've been collecting Marvel Legends, DC Universe, Street Fighter, TMNT, and the recent G.I.Joe 25th anniversary stuff that's been coming out. I have them all on display on shelves too, which I can atest to being a major pain to clean and dust when I get around to it.

Heh. Yeah, I mention to people what I collect or have a lot of they will either give looks or sometimes even be like 'Oh, wow, that's so cool. I remember..." That kind of stuff. I used to collect stuff like comics and card game stuff too at one point but I decided to shelf them as comics were getting silly and card game stuff became insane with things like rare cards and all that.

I stopped collecting in the past few years out of a need to unload the things I had no room for.  But looking at those comic covers I have to admit to an envious urge to get my hands on those and read them, they look awesome.

Killer Bees, I gave you karma since I'm a knitter too.  I learned how to knit two years ago, and right now my faves to work on are socks and hats, especially socks.  I live for trips to the yarn store, I can spend hours looking at and feeling the various fibers there.

I also crochet, which I learned as a little girl, I sew, and I know some embroidery and bead work.  I don't have a problem telling people I knit, in fact the restaurant I work at is so slow this time of year that I take projects with me and knit when I have nothing else to do.  Many of the customers like to watch me work on socks and ask questions about how it's done, plus it's a pretty rural area where people still do lots of things by hand.

My other hobbies are the ones I don't talk about often.  I'm deeply interested in the paranormal, and I've written some short pieces that have appeared on websites plus I hosted a paranormal podcast briefly.  Also, I've been doing astrological charts for people for about 20 years now.  I'm not as active with that as I used to be, I've found I enjoy knitting just as much, plus the knitting is good for the arthritis that has settled into my hands.

I collect political propaganda flyers. I have somewhat an obsession with gasmasks, i have a few and collect any pictures of them i can get my hands on. My favorites are those with a family orientated theme.

I have several hobbies that people don't fully understand.

Anime/Manga - I'm not super crazy but I do enjoy Anime and Manga, but my collection is fairly small due to limited funds.  My family doesn't fully understand and most of my friends understand since I either got them involved in it, or watch anime as well.

Martial arts weapons - Being a martial artist, I've had weapons training as a result of the school that I study at.  As a result I've collected a small collection of various weapons. Which roughly rounds out as 12 to 14 different types of nunchakus, 3 pairs of escrima sticks, 3 long staffs, 2 pairs of tonfas, a pair of sai, 2 pairs of kama's, a pair of twin hook swords, 4 wooden practice swords, 5 samurai swords, 4 butterfly knives, and a hunting knife.

TV show DVD's (Recent and old) - I love certain TV shows most old shows not too many current shows.  Here's my collection for TV show DVD's.

All seasons of Mcgyver
All current season releases (Season 1 thru 10) of the Simpsons.
Season 1 of Starksy and Hutch
Season 1 of Kung Fu
All current Family guy volumes (First movie, but not the second one yet)
All current King of the Hill volumes
All Seinfeld releases.

I also enjoy watching old TV game shows (Match Game, Card Sharks, Love connection (I know it's not really a game show), Press your Luck, Blockbusters, Password plus, Super Password, etc)  Of course out of watching these shows I have been told by my dad on numerous occasions that I was born 30 years too late.

I also have a nack for watching on Kickboxing matches (70's thru 90's, even recent stuff), as to me it's exiciting to watch.

I'll concede that I have a niece and nephew that are huge into Anime/Mange, they are SUPER CRAZY, they might be beyond that and they are both in their mid 20's they come down to my house and they bring loads of DVD, comics and other stuff. They have rooms full of the stuff at their house and I just don't get it. I'm like ok, I understand having a interest, but I really believe these two and their interest is beyond healthy, I truly believe it has caused them to become socially retarded. (I'm speaking of these 2 I know only and no one else.)

I'm 22 and I still watch it, but it's not a major part of my lifestyle.  I have a small collection, which would probably take up a small part of my wall but that's it.  I like anime, but I enjoy doing other things as well besides watching that.

That would send me into paroxysms of claustrophobia!  I can't even snorkel because I can't breathe through my mouth properly.
