Title: Movies that make you go "bOO-hOO!"
Post by: KYGOTC on February 15, 2008, 12:05:26 PM
Has a movie ever mad you cry? The olny one that I can think of that made me cry was this one that I saw when i was like 9 or 10. It was about this nun or some generic old lady who lived by herself in this little house in the mountains or something, and her whole life her only friend was this tree. One day, some people come down and saw the tree down to use it as a christmas tree in New York city. It was her best friend! It made me cry.

Any of you guys got a sob story?

Field Of Dreams...I probably can't watch it now because I'm a father and I'd lose it for a few days.

Spoken like a true bad movie geek, the ending of Godzilla 1985 gets me all trembly lipped. It's the combo of Raymond Burr's soliloquy and Big G's death screams as he falls into the volcano. The fact that he was duped into by the same evil mankind that fathered him just makes it all the more painful to sit through.  :bluesad:

Lots of scenes in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN really choke me up.

 "Was I a good man?"

  Gets me every time.

Also, towards the end of WE WERE SOLDIERS.....when Mel Gibson is all choked up when he arrives home.

Come to think of it...lots of war movies make me sad. I really got a thing against war...yet I own a lotta war movies. Go figure.

 Geez....you reminded me of something...

When I was a teenager,I took my little sister Wendy to see KING KONG (1976). She started crying when Kong was getting wasted atop the World Trade Center. I had to calm her down by telling her that Kong was just acting for the movie...that it was only ketchup packs.....and after they made the movie Kong went back home to his island. She was only about 5. Heh. She cried for Kong.

The opening scene in Saving Private Ryan when the old man is standing on the cemetery at Normandy. I've been there and to many other veteran cemeteries and with out fail I get a little puddly watching it.

I'm not known for my soft side but there are a very few that get me, nearly every time, most revolve around military movies dealing with reflection in later life, remembering those that have pasted. Personal reasons I won't get into.

Man, is it easy to make my lip quiver

20 Million Miles to Earth - The ending always makes me feel a little blue. It wasn't a monster!
King Kong (2005) - Kong's eyes dilating as his life slips away before he finally falls kills me.
Dragon Wars - the dragon crying and soaring off in sobs. My eyes are never dry.

Those are only the more recent ones. There are literally too many for me to remember and name without it seeming to the untrained eye that I'm making the stuff up

Clerks II, when the girl parks in front of the woman's clinic (considering an abortion), while the father sees a little girl wave to him from a restaurant window. Buckets!

Alright, heres one that is a bit goofy but I get choked up at the end of Finding Nemo.  Where Nemo and his father hug and Nemo goes off the school.  Once again, the father/son thing.  Being a parent I think makes you a bit soft once and awhile.

Return Of The King was mentioned.  The part where they all bow to the Hobbits.

Return Of The Jedi where Luke sees Yoda, Anakin and Obi Wan.

The Iron Giant gets me during the "Superman" bit during the big climax.  I have a feeling that the upcoming Wall-E will make me weepy since it has an adorable little robot.

The Elephant Man makes me tear up a bit every time.

Awakenings. When De Niro starts to relapse, I start to well up. It goes soggily downhill into the fetal sobbing position from there. Even now I generally start to tear up when I pass the word "Awakenings" on the guide channel...

If I have enough liquor in me, any poignant or beautiful film can make me misty.  Here's a few that always get me:
CINEMA PARADISO
THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES
CINDERELLA LIBERTY
SOUNDER
ORDINARY PEOPLE
MY LIFE AS A DOG
LA STRADA
NIGHTS OF CABIRIA
REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE
WUTHERING HEIGHTS
THE YOUNG VISITERS
(spelling correct)

Well, the only one I can think of that had me holding back tears was the sequence near the end of Grave of the Fireflies with the song "There's No Place Like Home" playing in the background. (No spoilers on why it's so heart-wrenching; you'll have to see it for yourself.)

The ending of Star Trek 2, obviously.  I grew up with the crew of the Enterprise.  Watching Spock go is like watching my grandfather pass away.  (I introduced my kids to this a few months ago, after they had seen enough of the original series for it to make sense to them.  Not a dry eye in the house.)

Someone else mentioned the ending of It's a Wonderful Life; for me, the scene that does it is when George comes home after the money's gone missing, and just demolishes the little architectural models he's been building in the corner of the room.

I haven't really cried over a movie, but oddly enough, there are two movies recently that had me, not cry, but tear up.

E.T.- I caught it about a month ago and honestly haven't seen it since I was about 6.  The end when they're taking E.T. to his ship and Elliot's telling him to stay and whatnot kinda hit me all of a sudden.

The Muppet Movie- Gonzo's song in the desert "I'm Going To Go Back There Someday."  Such a sad song.

I tear up easily . . . SAVING PRIVATE RYAN gets me, so does the part in RETURN OF THE KING when Sam carries Frodo on his back u pthe slopes of Mount Doom, and also the parting scene at the Grey Havens.  Also that scene in THE PATRIOT where Benjamin Martin's little girl comes running after screaming "Daddy!  Please stay.  I'll say anything!  Anything you want!"  I absolutely cannot watch that without tearing up.

Ah, yes. Star Trek 2 was another one. Spock's death and funeral gets me a little choked up every time.

As for It's a Wonderful Life, I usually start around the time George sees Harry's grave, and I'm getting more choked up by the time George is pleading for his life. I usually lose it when he gets home and there is the huge outpouring of joy. And if I manage to hold it in through that, the inscription "No man is a failure who has friends" is the icing on the cake.

More recently, "The Last Man on Earth"... the part when Vincent Price starts laughing crazily and then starts sobbing.

Lots of movies make me cry.  The most recent one was I Am Legend when Will Smith is crying and saying to the mannequin, "please say hello to me".  I blubbed like a baby.

I don't have trouble crying in movies.  If I tear up, I go with it.  Other movies that made me cry (not the full list by any means):

Armageddon:  When Bruce Willis pushes Ben Affleck back into the air lock and Ben Affleck is screaming, "Harry, no!"

Four Weddings And A Funeral:  At the funeral scene where John Hannah's character is reciting that poem for his dead lover.

Lilo and Stitch - Stitch Has A Glitch:  When Stitch dies and Lilo is crying over him.  And Hayley Westenra's beautiful ethereal voice is singing the line, "I will love you always."

V For Vendetta:  When Evie is finally freed from her fear of death and she goes out into the rain with her arms held high and sobbing.

Starman:  When the Starman leaves at the end and he says, "I love you Jenny Hayden."

That's it for now.  I have heaps of other examples, but I'm in real danger of blubbing right now and it's not a good look in the office.

Honestly, I don't remember the movie very well at all, except that the title song played during a scene in which, indeed, Savannah did smile.

On the other hand, given the period of my life in which I think I saw it, I probably watched it back-to-back with Phantasm 2, which tends to skew the emotional responses.

There are several places in Forrest Gump that get to me, ditto for the Best Years of Our Lives, The Iron Giant, King Kong, Old Yeller, etc. I also found a moment on the bonus disc of Band of Brothers where "Babe" Hefron and Bill Garnere are looking over the woods outside Bastonge, the conversation between the two veterans always gets to me. There are lots more, if I identify strongly with the character or characters, if the story I'm seeing is based on a true incident I will generally have a strong reaction to it, might not always show it but I will feel it.

ARMAGEDDON: "It's my job!"  "You go take care of my little girl now. That's your job."   The perfect storm of Michael Bay's telephone commercial-looking camerawork, Rabin's mercilessly manipulative score and Willis' world weary delivery.

V: "God is in the rain"  Agreed, very moving.  I'm usually primed for that scene by the reading of Valerie's letter("Even though I do not know you and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you...I love you. With all my heart, I love you.")

STARMAN:  Ahhh that long lingering shot of Karen Allen's beautiful face.

   Consider this thirded!

- One that lays me sideways is IKIRU.  The film's gotten alot more attention over the last few years and the dvd cover basically gives away the crucial emotional moment, but the image of Takashi Shimura on the playground swing in the gentle snow is absolute poetry.  Above all of Kurosawa's other stunners, this one simple story of a dying bureaucrat's last effort to make a difference will haunt you for a long time.  Some years ago, we watched this in a class on Asian film and my inability to control my emotions caused two girls to lose their composure, one actually had to run from the room.  Embarrassing.

- The flashback to the last supper with his Apostles as Jesus undergoes his real-time Via Dolorosa in Gibson's PASSION OF THE CHRIST had me blubbering quite severly, though the theatre was humid with the collective moisture of hundreds of wet eyes.  Seconded only by the flashback to his mother helping him after falling as a child that plays parallel to Jesus' mother running to help him on his way to Golgotha.  As with APOCALYPTO, say what you want about Gibson, but you can't deny his cinematic abilities.

- on LOTR:  I still get as misty with Gandalf's 'death' in FELLOWSHIP as I did the first time.  Even though I knew from reading it for years that it really wasn't the end of the road for him, the way Jackson handled the scene was hauntingly effective.  Howard Shore's musical approach for that sequence showed an almost Herrmann-like sense of aesthetic intuition(I know, GEEK!).   The sequence in TWO TOWERS with King Theoden softly reciting the poem("Where is the horse and the rider...) and being dressed for battle as the old men and boys are armed and Saruman's army marches inexorably towards them gets me every time.  Oddly, for such a long-ass film, in RETURN OF THE KING it's the tiny little moment after the destruction of the ring, where Sam and Frodo are perched on a small cleft of rock as Mount Doom disintegrates around them.  They've succeeded in their crucial errand yet they will not make it off the moutain and they know it.  A very tender and moving moment between two sensitive souls stuck "here at the end of all things." I get teary just to trying to write this damn reply.

Thirded

There's a slightly more saccrine movie called 'Barefoot Gen' that I nonetheless recommend.

Of course, an Anime doesn't have to be historical to get the waterworks flowing. As a medium, they really seem to be adept at including all facets of emotion into a story that only advertises one or two.

I've heard Battle Angel is going to be made into a live action by Americans-BUY the Anime and the Manga. Amazing, heartwrenching stuff.

"If it takes forever...I will wait for you..."

That sucked. The thing that really p**ses me off is, how much work would it have been to include Seymour (the dog) as a regular character? Just showing jumping around planet express, barking a few times an episode, work it into a few jokes...but no, they have to let the dog stay dead. Its a vile use of the reset button technique, but that's just the way it is. I was reading the trivia section on the wikipedia page, and according to that, it could have been worse- orginally,  it was a fossilized vesion of Fry's mother, with pretty much the same results, but that was deemed to be too depressing. (To be honest, I'd still be more upset over the dog; the mom was kind of a b***h anyway).

Also, Grave of the Fireflies. And if you happen to be familiar with Fullmetal Alchemist, the episode where Hughes gets killed. You have to be an emotional zombie not to start bawling during the funeral scene.

silent running - bruce dern should have let the slightly busted robot stay with the other one in the garden

Another one for me is the end of Donnie Darko.

Awakenings. When De Niro starts to relapse, I start to well up. It goes soggily downhill into the fetal sobbing position from there. Even now I generally start to tear up when I pass the word "Awakenings" on the guide channel...
I second Awakenings! The scene where they dance one last(?) time... One of the few movies that gets me going, and almost every time. (It's been a couple of years since I saw it though.)

Labyrinth (One of my alltime favourite movies that I've watched a million times!)
The scene were Sarah takes a bite out of Jareth's gift and forgets her friends, and she floats past them in that magic bubble!... :bluesad: :bluesad: :bluesad:
This movie has started to effect me even more as I've gotten older, I suppose that "leaving childhood and accepting life as an adult" theme just pushes my, ever growing, nostalgia buttons the right(wrong) way.

I can't believe I forgot this classic tearjerker:  the end of Wizard of Oz when Dorothy is leaving Oz.  I just can't help myself - I blub every time.

I like horror movies and heavy music but I have a wicked soft spot for The Wizard of Oz.  I don't cry or anything but it's such a great American movie.  Hell, it's just a great movie period.  Sure the whimsy gets turned up to 11 but it reminds me of my childhood.

I remember I had to watch "Pay it Forward" for school, so my compassion for it is minnimal. Even though it had a good message..

I never used to be too weepy at films, but here's a few that get to me.....

-Old Yeller
-The Green Berets
-The Shootist
-It's A Wonderful Life
-Tales From the Crypt (Grimsdyke story)
-Escape From the Planet of the Apes
-The Fighting Sullivans
-Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (Tracy's final speech and Hepburn's reaction)
-Miracle On 34th Street (1947...several scenes get to me!)
-Poseidon Adventure (1972)

I'm sure there are a ton more, but that's a start.   :teddyr:

That's the wrong question to ask me!  When I'm in a certain frame of mind, Starship Troopers makes me sob brokenly.

Yeah that part where Shelley Winters dies gets to me too.

Not a movie, but the last 6 minutes or so the final episode of Boy Meets World:

I bawl my eyes out watching it.

Well, dunno.. lots of films have made me cry, but considering I suffer from severe depression, I dunno if that really means anything.  :)

But here are some that I'm sure it's not just me, but the films themselves..

Stand By Me - testament to childhood friendship, how those bonds sometimes go deeper than anything will experience as an adult.

Hearts In Atlantis

Casper - the scene where Casper appears as a boy, the song they play ("Remember Me This Way") reminds me a lot of a lady friend who passed away years ago.

Agree with those who already mentioned Grave of the Fireflies

Also, I haven't seen it yet, but something tells me Bridge to Terabithia would probably make me cry as well... especially if the story is anything like the real incidents the authoress' son went through that inspired the book...

Theres a movie called" What Dreams May Come" where Robin Williams is not annoying.  Its about the afterlife and love etc.  It always chokes me up.  Also "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" always gets me.

Dear Mrdstruction!

Since English isn't my native tongue, I am in no position to comment on your use of the language in question. But unfortunately I find some of your posts practically unreadable, so would you please consider the following(which I do myself):

1. Use the Spell Check function, located just below the window with your writings in it.
2. Review/preview your comments calmly a couple of times before posting them, do they make sense?
3. Please consider using capital letters(in the right places) and punctuation once in a while.

This was only meant as kind advice and I sincerely hope that I haven't hurt your feelings.

I can't believe that nobody has mentioned "The Phantom of the Opera"  :buggedout:
The 1925 version didn't make me cry but all the others made me sob like a little child, especially the 1943 version with Claude Rains. I always found him to be the most sympathetic of the Phantoms... A lonely old violinist who spends all the money he makes to pay for Christine´s singing lessons, then he tries to get more money by selling a concerto and kills a man he thought had stolen his music... He gives everything he has for Christine, even his own life, and that gets me every single time... Same thing goes for every version of "King Kong".
I also cried while Watching "Paulie". Parrots are so adorable, and the movie was so touching, that combination got me off guard  :twirl:

Spoken like a true bad movie geek, the ending of Godzilla 1985 gets me all trembly lipped. It's the combo of Raymond Burr's soliloquy and Big G's death screams as he falls into the volcano. The fact that he was duped into by the same evil mankind that fathered him just makes it all the more painful to sit through.  :bluesad:

Likewise when I first saw it. The music, the visuals... even Raymond Burr's narration lent to it. I was like 9 at the time. It was the first time I'd seen a Godzila movie with a serious tone, so it was quite an experience for me. I hadn't even seen Godzilla, King of the Monsters until years later. I remember my eyes welling up with tears right as the roar changed into a scream. It still is a powerful moment for me.

I'm a native speaker, and I agree with Malavaqua. I've seen l33t and text-message shorthand more coherent than that! I'll bet Mr. Destruction there has ADHD or some such.

Grave of the Fireflies...

I must concur on TWOK. That ending always gets me.

I may have seen Barefoot Gen. I know I've seen the box for it.

True about the emotion. Too many people are quick to write off all anime as either Dragonball, hentai, or Pokemon. It's an entire art unto itself with as many facets as any other standard art.

As for Battle Angel, I'm curious to see how serious a shot they give at the movie. I hope they don't make some cheap Matrix / Cyberpunk looking knockoff. There's more to it.

Agree big time with OLD YELLER, AWAKENINGS, GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS, KING KONG and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. The following films I've found very moving as well at times:

PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE
GHOST IN THE SHELL
PATLABOR 1: THE MOVIE
PATLABOR 2: THE MOVIE
DOMINION: TANK POLICE
BRAZIL
NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR
BLADE RUNNER
THE CROW

And probably most moving of all is Edward G. Robinson's "Going Home" scene in SOYLENT GREEN.

Most men will only admit to crying to guy movies with chuck norris or a giant beast. LOL So i've found.

Now sometimes I'm in a mood and i'll cry at a stupid movie. But, if I had to list only the movies that had me in the gut wrenching heaving sobs that are ugly and only done privately a few come to mind

"PONETTE" - I only saw this movie once but when I did it was very sad. It was about a little 5 year old girl coping with the death of her mother the way a 5 year old might. It felt very real, and she gave a really good honest performance for a 5 year old. This movie is in french, subtitled, however. I know that's on the list of "no no's" for guy movies :-)

"DANCER IN THE DARK" - This was a strange movie, very odd music by Bjork and I found myself watching it on cable late one night. I couldn't turn it off because I guess i just wanted to see what happened next. Before I knew it I was really drawn into this woman's dark world where she tried to use fantasy as a way to escape. And well, the end, did me in.

"TERMS OF ENDEARMENT" - I know, always the staple for chick flicks. But Any movie that deals with death you can't help but feel sad over, because we've all been through these moments. You empathize

"BRIDGE TO TARIBITHIA" - I know, i'm kind of embarassed at this one. I thought it was going to be stupid like that "Chronicals of narnia" crap. But the next thing I knew i was a pile of snot

And yeah the staples like Old Yeller, lots of movies make us teary eyed or have a moment of tears like "Schindlers list" or dang, any spielberg movie. I was trying to think of movies that physically took the life out of me..lol  But I also cried as a kid at the end of King Kong - i didn't think it was fair Kong had to die.

Okay, people will laugh at me talking about these, but they do make me cry.

1. To Heal A Nation: TV movie about Vietnam veteran Jan Scruggs and his fight to have the Vietnam War Memorial built in honour of the Veterans. Those last emotional ten minutes or so of the film make me blub.   :bluesad:

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: the 1990 film has a scene where Master Splinter appears to his sons above the fire and says "I love you all, my sons." Yikes, waterworks city.  :bluesad:

3. Armageddon: from the time that Bruce Willis shouts "We win, Gracie!" to the end of the film, I cry like a baby. A combination of the acting, cinematography and definitely the music by South African Trevor Rabin.

4. The Shawshank Redemption: From the time that Red finds the box in the field to the final beach scene.....yowza  :bluesad:

5. The death of Richard Harris in The Wild Geese  :bluesad:

6. The death of Jock the faithful dog in Jock of The Bushveld  :bluesad:

7. The ending of Jannie Totsiens had me blubbing in the projection booth.  :bluesad:

8. The main character's suicide in Katrina also had me bawling.

9. The ending of The Winners left me in pieces.

And, on a lighter note..............

The scene in "X Men: The Final Stand" where Hugh Jackman kicks that mutant in the cojones and says "Grow those back" brought tears to my eyes.  :teddyr:

BAND OF BROTHERS.
Even thinking of the music gets to me.
The scene where Winters and his men board the C-47 for Normandy realy makes me loose it.
