Okay, we are finally getting a PS2 (I've been saving up stuff for this).  Yes, I know it is the "yesterday" game system.  Doesn't really matter to me, because I do not play that often and cannot justify shelling out the $ needed for one of the current flagships.

I want to know some suggested games for the console.  I am looking at the following:

Godzilla:  Save the Earth
Final Fantasy X
War of the Monsters

I need to find a racing game that little Andy would like (meaning, very simple, because he is 3 and loves cars/trucks/etc).  Also, any decent kids' games would be appreciated.  The children will not be playing hours of games, but an hour of whatever - that works on problem solving or creativity, is good.  Variety and moderation are two things I believe in.

As far as the three you're looking at, I'm not certain of entirely.  Final Fantasy should be worth the buy.  I've played one of the previous games and it was decent. 

As far as car games, I believe the NASCAR games are rated E for everybody, so your son should be okay with it.  I'd assume it'd be somewhat easy on an easy mode.  Only racing game I have is The Simpsons Road Rage, but that's a little bit for older kids.  Not much language, but the way the game works is you drive around as a Simpsons character and your character works as a cab driver picking people up and dropping them off.  You have a time limit though.

Wheel of Fortune is decent enough, especially if you have any kids in elementary school as it could help with problem solving, spelling, etc.

I'd like to be of more help, but I don't know much for kid games anymore.  I saw some Muppet games at the store but didn't pick them up.

I could probably suggest some for you though, pending what you're into.

For yourself, I support your three current picks, and suggest the God of War games for adventure brawling fun, Resident Evil 4 (definitely need to get the chainsaw controller to go with it) for all your zombie killing needs, pick up a Burnout title if you're into racing (and more importantly crashing), and if you're looking for a good RPG go for Dragon Quest VIII. If you want to relive gaming days gone by, there's a literal half-ton of anthology discs out there that collect classics from the last 20+ years. I'd resist the urge to play the newest Godzilla title, Godzilla: Unleashed. It's an okay title on the Wii, but I've heard tell that its PS2 counterpart is rancid.

Not sure about educational titles, but for younger racing games, PS2 has a number of Micro Machines and Hot Wheels titles to choose from, as well as some cartoony racers like ChoroQ and a few Mario Kart knock-offs, including one starring Crash Bandicoot.

Wasnt' that Crash game called Crash Team Racing or something similar?

I forgot all about it.  Used to love Crash.

Here are some games that I would consider "must buys" after purchasing a PS2:

Final Fantasy XII
God of War 1 & 2
Silent Hill 2, 3 and 4
Resident Evil 4
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2
Ratchet and Clank 1, 2 and 3
Jak and Daxter 1, 2 and 3

DEFINITLEY get God of War it recieves my award of BEST GAME EVER!!!.  Your son will probably like the first Jak and Daxter game, however the next two involve shooting which could be complicated for a 3 year old.  And keep God of War away from the little ones, it has an M rating.

I think that was the original PSOne game. I think the PS2 sequel was called Crash and Burn... not to be confused with the Full Moon movie of the same name... which both crashed and burned...

EDIT: scratch that, reverse it, Crash and Burn was a mediocre street racing title. The Bandicoot Kart title for PS2 was Crash Nitro Racing.

Oh, and if you're up for a challenge, give the two Maximo games a try. Some always fun modernization of the Ghosts/Ghouls & Goblins franchise.  :teddyr:

Other suggestions that popped to mind: Rygar, Katamari Damacy, Twisted Metal: Black, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, any Guitar Hero installments, and the Onimusha games. Viewtiful Joe was fun too, and deceptively hard.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'm going to look for the Hot Wheels and Micro Machines games for Andy.  I loved Resident Evil 2 on the PS1, so I'll look for 4.  God of War also looks like one that could work for me.

I'd heard that the newest Godzilla game was one to avoid on the PS2.

The good news Andrew you can buy several awesome games for dirt cheap.  Some of my favs;

Midway Arcade Classics (note that I think they have an old school racing compliation)

If you're into Final Fantasy, you may want to look into Kingdom Hearts.  Its Disney meets FF and its a good time killer. 

God of War 1 and 2 are great games, but definitely not family-friendly. I also highly recommend Shadow of the Colossus. If you're looking for giant monsters, how about an entire game that involves climbing around on top of the monsters themselves while trying to find a way to kill them?

I just started playing Kingdom Hearts, the Disney/Square game. It's pretty fun, but probably too complicated for the extremely young. Katamari Damacy is fairly intuitive.

As far as games for kids, I still remember watching my cousin, who was three or four, play all the way through the Resident Evil 2 demo. When he managed to kill the "licker" creature with the shotgun the entire family cheered. Now, he probably shouldn't have been playing zombie-killing games, but that boy was a natural born video gamer.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance- A game similar in vein to Final Fantasy, only with Marvel comics characters.  You have about 20/25 superheroes, and over 30 villians in the game.  Over 140 characters total, but not all are selectable.

Guitar Hero- Fun game, totally addictive.

Tony Hawk Series- Any game in the series is pretty good, and anyone can play, especially the earlier games, as there isn't a story as opposed to later games.

It is meant for more of an adult crowd.  Like I said, more towards fans of Final Fantasy.  I have part 2 but its not nearly as good as part 1.  Although you get to use the Tron bikes.   :thumbup:

I loved GODZILLA: SAVE THE EARTH. Now I know a lot of folks were a bit disappointed with that one but I was very happy especially once I learned how to use Gigan's buzzsaw belly. There's a variety of little games within that one too although the gameplay is perhaps a bit repetitive...depends on how cool you feel it is to be able to play the monsters...that's the appeal of it to me. Agree very much with the recommendation of MARVEL: ULTIMATE ALLIANCE. Great game. And they might be a bit cartoonish but I like the Spyro the Dragon games for PS2. And speaking of collections, I love the Atari one.

It's a PsOne game but it's great and will work on the console - Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee.

I do have Abe's Oddysee around here somewhere for my good old PS1.  Had forgotten all about "Destroy All Humans," but I'll definitely look for that one.  Vaporizing crowds of hairless apes sounds like the perfect way to relax.

Jase, I believe that there is a newer Godzilla game called "Godzilla Unleashed" and the reviews for it have not been kind.  "Godzilla:  Save the Earth" has gotten a lot more love.

Next to R-Type Final and Dragon Quest 8, it wins my vote for best PS2 game.

Oh yeah I'm a huge shmups fan.  Gradius V is a great game and I'm perplexed as to the somewhat mixed reviews that some gaming sites gave it.  The Gradius III/IV is pretty cool as well if you're into old school shoot-em-up type action.

Raiden III is a decent vertical shooter. 

Most reviewers seemed to have really dug Gradius V though. The ratio of reviews on Game Rankings is 83% out of about 61 articles.
Anyway, yeah. The Gradius III/IV compilation was pretty cool too. The arcade version of Gradius III is a beast. It's difficulty was on par with R-Type II and Pulstar. In fact, I can't even make it beyond the third stage of the arcade version.
I was sort of disappointed with Raiden III; it wasn't bad game by any means, but compared to some of the other shmups to have come out out in the last ten years like G-Darius, Ikaruga, Thunder Force V, etc., Raiden III just doesn't stand a chance. It makes for a good rental though. Just would've wished that Raiden would have had more of a bang after twenty years of being silent. Hopefully Raiden IV will make up for it.

Well Ive been Sports gaming with my ps2 NHL 08 is fun once you get the controls down.
And I've been poking at Drakenguard. and........ I dunno its ok So far the best ps2 games are still those last big hits they put out in 2005 God of War, Resident Evil 4. I'm finding you cant go wrong with capcom. Some weird titles they put out like  God Hand ( good fighter and Killers 7 ( strange play, super cheap ) are fun. Silent Hill Origins a PSP game is being ported to ps2, and theres vice city stories another psp port. I have not had much luck with RPG's Ive been thinking of trying FF12 , closest fun i had was dragon quest but I didnt finish that ether became to goofy and repetitive. 

System arrived, picked up a couple of games at GameStop, and I have to say that I love "Destroy All Humans 2."  I must have spent 2 hours just flinging tanks around, frying cops, and generally making an alien nuisance out of myself.  Then it was time to actually try doing some of the missions.

People on the street say some really funny things as you run by.  In some ways, it reminds me of the latest "Leisure Suit Larry" game.

Told ya! It's addictive and a serious time killer ... then again most game are.


Good for any age kid (even adults) another seriously stupid addictive time killer ... you just roll a ball to make it bigger and meet your size goal to progress, goofy and addictive.

Destroy All Humans, any good?

I wanted to get it but heard it was bad.  I'll check out prices tomorrow.

I picked it up far $5 and a local store ... it was worth $5. I haven't played either DAH I or II in while but there not top notch games but they don't completely suck either.

I have only played "Destroy All Humans 2."  The missions are fine, about par for the course for that sorts of thing.  However, I could spend hour just screwing with the civilians, cops, and military.  It's like "Rampage" in that manner.  There isn't any goal besides destruction.  You have to agree that it's funny when you shoot a few vehicles with the disc weapon and they go crashing down the street (the discs make whatever they hit fly through the air). 

Last night, I was laughing so hard that I cried.  I shot a VW microbus in the tail with a disc as I ran down the street.  It took off and flew "Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang" style for a few hundred feet, with the hippies jumping out two stories up in the air.  The flying microbus then landed flat on a crowd of people, before jumping into the air and crashing into a building.  One of the people it landed on did the flopping fish thing. 

It's  a blast when you have an APC, a tank, and a microbus all crashing up and down a steet (crushing civilians and troops).

I'd probably play it just to screw with the people.  That's what I do with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

I bought both of the Lego Star Wars games for 5 bucks a piece on the PS2 this past weekend.  I had seen friends play them over time but hadn't really tried them myself.

Talk about having a blast!  These are great games to play with your kids if you have any. Truly a family type game that anyone can enjoy.

I've heard they're doing a Lego game for the Indiana Jones trilogy which ought to be really funny. 

There was a game called Obscure, I never played it but everyone said it had a very B-movie, teen slasher feel to it.  The fact that used copies all seem to sell for more than it cost originally seems to speak highly of it.  Anyhow, they're coming out with a sequel to it at the end of March, it's already available in Europe and seems to be getting good reviews.  I'll probably check it out.

Damn! I can't believe I wasn't around for this forum!
I woudl really reccomend Timesplitters 1,2 and 3 if you like first person shooters. Bur their probably a little to mature for the kids.
