Title: Lizard in a Woman's Skin (1971)
Post by: Joe the Destroyer on February 24, 2008, 03:30:02 AM
I've had an obsession with gialli lately.  Strangely, I still haven't picked up any Mario Bava stuff yet, though I do want to get a box set of his.  I've mainly been picking up the ones done by Fulci and Argento first, especially since I have some familiar ground with those two.

This one was certainly interesting, though the film didn't really start holding up for me until the second half.  I thought the whole bit with hippies and conservatives was a slightly different take for a giallo, at least compared with what I've seen, but it added a little flavor to the movie.  The aspect I think I enjoyed the most was the denouement, in which they established what seemed like an obvious pick for whodunnit, shifted it a little to make you question the obvious suspect, and then play back into the obvious pick, and give you more background on the story that painted the character in a completely different light.  It kinda reminded me of Cello, if any of you have see that (decent K-horror flick, but maybe a little to Ringu-esque).

Of course, the direction is awesome, though the lack of suspense and slow character development in the first half hampered some of my thoughts on the film.  Still worth a look, although not as good, IMO, as Don't Torture a Duckling.  7/10

sounds good. ever since seeing argento's deep red (profondo rosso) I've been meaning to get into Italian 70s thrillers... this one looks a little earlier. than P.R... is it available on DVD with subtitles and/or dubbing?

I think it has both sub and dub on the DVD.  I know there are some scenes in the dub version that were added in and had to be subbed because there was no English track for them.

Deep Red is a really good one, probably my favorite giallo.  Well, that and Don't Torture a Duckling.

I bought this DVD a few months back.  I think some scenes are visually stunning.  However, overall, I was disappointed.  I was curious about the "shocking" scene with the dogs, but it's pretty tame by today's standards.
