Title: Another Dune movie in the works
Post by: trekgeezer on March 18, 2008, 07:26:10 AM
Paramount is having a go at it this time.     Will the third time be the charm?

Lynch's version of Dune has always been a guilty pleasure for me. It's way out there at times, but I love it. The Sci-Fi mini series was good, but the lack of a budget was obvious. Here's hoping this one turns out good. I am a little dubious about his intention to make a faithful adaptation. In order to do so, the movie will have to be 4 or 5 hours long.

You're right about the length, that dinner sequence could last a good hour by itself.  It will be hard to do with all the internal dialogs the characters have.

This is great news for me. I hope, hope, hope they get it right this time. Dune is one of my favorite books. Now I liked Lynch's Dune. Yes... after reading the books I realize how much he got wrong. I don't care, I still like the movie even though I realize the opportunity that passed through Lynch's fingers. Dune is the poster child for anti-studio artistic interpretation of the given story.  However, I can't say enough that the look and feel of the movie was dead on, the score was perfect. If they can re-capture the feel, while staying relatively true to the story then it can be a success.

Please, no rain on Arrakis until the proper part of the story. Please get the Harkonens right. Please get the Bene Gesserits right. Please get Duncan right. Please get the Wierding Way right. Please get the Sardukar / Fremen in the eye's of the Emperor right. Please get the ages right. Please get the political structure right. Did I leave anything out?

Please just get SOMETHING right.
Hated the series, I agree the Lynch version is a guilty pleaseure, though.

What Shadow says. For me, the perfect "Dune" would be a TV miniseries, to get the length right, with Lynch directing to get the director right, I like his style, and with enough money
to get everything else right.

The trouble with a TV Mini Series is that they never get a decent budget. Plus if its TV then it has to be compromised to fit into TV guidelines. I think the studio has the right idea making it a tentpole movie franchise. To me that sounds like they're planning on filming more than one movie a la LoTR. You get more of the story and more depth to the story. I don't know if you necessarily have to go with the breakpoints of the novels, if they could make it work then I would give them a little license there (please not the word little, no heartplugs... dear God).
