Title: The Dark Backward
Post by: Andrew on April 07, 2008, 07:43:56 AM
Man, I have got to hunt down whoever it was who reminded me about this movie and torture them for weeks.  I'd forgotten it, probably a natural defense mechanism, but gave it another try after the guilty party mentioned it.  My memory of it said that it was bad.  I'd never finished it the first time I watched it.

Well, this time I finished it, but I was not the picture of happiness while doing so.  What you have is Judd Nelson as a terribly skinny (and it doesn't help that he keeps his shoulders hunched forward the whole movie) and terribly unfunny comedian who really makes his living as a garbage man.  His friend is Bill Paxton, who loves being a garbage man, playing the accordion, and bedding extremely overweight women who look like they might be men with puffy cheeks.

Judd mucks around, trying to make people laugh.  It is painful.  PAINFUL!  God damn, make the jokes stop!  I didn't know that jokes like this existed!  ARRRGGGGGGHHHH!

Okay, I'm fine.  Judd has no luck with his routine until a bump on his back slowly grows into a full arm that is completely functional.  Then a talent scout takes notice, and for some reason the scout (who is Wayne Newton) thinks that a three-armed comedian is a surefire success; especially if he has a dirty accordion player for a sidekick.

I was really hoping that the third arm would make Judd funnier, maybe less sweaty - anything to change from how the movie has been going.  ARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!

The high point of the film was an advertisement for squeezable bacon.  No kidding.  If I ever watch this again, I'm going to be begging for the squeezable bacon part of the script, and cursing myself once it has come and gone, leaving nothing between itself and the end of the movie - besides pain and suffering.

I think the person who got me interested in this abomination was Derf or Mofo Rising.  Yep, one of those two...

I've seen THE DARK BACKWARD.  I found it boring and I always find JUDD NELSON annoying.

No need to thank me, your appreciation is reward enough. I think the movie came up during a discussion on Shakes the Clown.

Yeah, it doesn't hold up well, and I had fond memories of the film. These days though, my main objection to the film is not its terribleness, but that it's about the entertainment industry. I find those movies far too self-indulgent. I still like the joke about stamps. Nothing funnier than an unfunny joke told in the worst manner possible, unless your a member of the audience. Also, I think there's a webpage floating around detailing the advertising from the film.

Plus the title is from a Shakespeare quote. You're booing Shakespeare!

Yeah, like Mofo Rising, I had fond memories of this movie, but upon rewatching it recently, I found it painful (though not as painful as Andrew). It is just a movie that struck me as pleasantly weird years ago and as, um, not so pleasant now.

I believe I warned everyone in my Shakes the Clown thread about this movie, so I take no responsibility for any burned retinas/gouged out eyes/hours of precious life lost watching it.

When I saw that title, I thought: "Isn't this the film where Judd Nelson has an arm growing out of his back?" It was.  :buggedout: :buggedout:

I wanted to like this when it came out, just because it was different. However it's one of the few movies I truly disliked.

You know, I have that sad feeling I get when I hear a flick is horrible.  I almost feel like I have to see this movie, but judging by everyone's reaction, I feel if I do, the instant I open the box it'll be like the ending of Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Well, that and I don't need to go wasting more money.
