Title: I'm working with Henry Rollins!
Post by: Trevor on April 29, 2008, 08:31:40 AM

Strange for me, I know, but Mr Rollins was in SA making a documentary about our history and the film company now needs historical footage from us to add to it.  :teddyr:

Hey Trev, tell him that I thought the pink sweat pants he wore in Feast were quite flattering.

:teddyr: I never met him, actually: I'm involved with the film company that made his documentary on South Africa. This was my email to his producer:

Dear K----

Thanks for the email: I always smile when I read or hear the name Henry Rollins as my image of him will laways be him driving and wrecking that HumVee in the movie Jackass while SteveO and Ryan Dunn are bouncing around in the back of the car. J

The National Film Archives has footage in its’ holdings dating back to 1898: while we have such footage, we are unfortunately not the rights holders in any of the cases. This is also true for the anti-South African footage that we hold, much of which is owned either by the BBC, Granada TV  or CBS. Some of the titles are 25 Years of Apartheid, White Africa, The Afrikaner, SA Loves Jesus, The Heart Of Apartheid, The Dumping Grounds, Discarded People, Sabotage In South Africa.

Should you wish to use the footage we have (which is on film and not video as yet) you would have to clear the usage rights with the copyright holders first. We also have no transfer facilities so the transfer work would have to be outsourced to a transfer facility: in your case it would be better to get the footage straight from the BBC or Granada or CBS archives.

The NFA has no footage on Nelson Mandela or of Robben Island during its’ prison days: however we do hold footage of Robben Island when it was a leper colony and swims by athletes to and from the island. This is copyright the SABC.

White Africa (copyright BBC) features an interview with a young Desmond Tutu.

The Heart Of Apartheid (also BBC) focuses mainly on Cape Town and the life in District Six, which may be of interest.

The documentary Amandla! A revolution in four part harmony (not in our holdings) features an in depth look at the so-called “struggle songs”.

Discarded People (copyright ITV) focuses on the destruction of District 6 in Cape Town.

The Robben Island Museum (www.robben-island.org.za) would perhaps be able to assist you with footage that you require, as would the African Skies website which features the work of the Dutch Anti-South African movement at www.africaserver.nl/africanskies.

I trust this has assisted you: warm South African greetings and my regards to Mr Rollins too.

Regards

Trevor

Oh, it's HENRY Rollins. I initially thought of Howard Rollins, the guy from In the Heat of the Night. I was thinking "why is that a big deal?"  :teddyr:

Well it would be "a big deal" since HOWARD ROLLINS died in 1996...

I also like HENRY ROLLINS and sometimes watch his show in IFC; have you heard the track he performs with WILLIAM SHATNER on SHATNER's album Has Been...?  It's great!  Have fun, Trevor!
