Title: Favorite/Least Favorite Scents
Post by: Mr. DS on May 09, 2008, 05:47:04 PM
Yeah  admit its a bit of an odd subject.  It all began when I walked into a recently cleaned bathroom today and noticed how awesome its smells.  It got me to thinking to what other scents (some normal, some a bit abnormal) I like such as;

Freshly cut grass, Ocean (I even like low tide which around here reeks),  Bananas, Onions-yeah its odd but I love the smell of them freshly chopped, just about anything on a grill, Irish Spring soap, freshly brewed coffee, cooking bacon

Then theres the smells that make me want to yak such as;

Stale urine, puke, day old popcorn

What are some of your favs or least favs?

I like the smell of mothballs. . It reminds me of my Grandma's (Bless her Soul) old house. I like the smell of Thanksgiving day. And the wind in late fall. Gasoline. Cigars. Old comic books. Fresh news print. Hot tar. A pig farm(breath that country air!). A pretty girls perfume. Whiskey. Coffee in the morning. Bacon frying.  :smile:

Hate...? Hospitals. Vomit. p**s. sh1t. Road kill. Dogs with mange. Rotton taters. Rotton vegtables. Garbage in general. Raw sewage. Dead fish. Night crawlers that have set in the trunk of a car for a week in a bait box. Stale beer. Liver (yeeech!). Unleaded gas. Or rotton eggs, for that matter. Farts.  :bluesad:

Good: Cinnimon buns, the sweetest smell on this planet.

Bad:  My spanish classroom the second you walk in, its very stale, like if you fried up some cardboard.

My all time favorite smell is fresh ground coffee.   :smile:
I don't drink coffee but I love opening a can of Folger's and taking a big whiff.
The smell of a rose is also one of my favorite scents.
When I was a kid, my mom used to have a rose garden and I always remember putting them up to my nose and giving them a big sniff.

The smell I hate the most is other people's s**t.
If I walk into a bathroom where someone just took a dump, I will immediately start gagging and if it's bad enough, I will puke.

Hmm . . . I love the sweet scent that rises off the lake in early summer.  It's a scent that is cloying and nasty when it is too strong, but when it is just a hint, it reminds me of fish, arrowheads, my boat, my Dad, and my childhood rambling along the lakeshore.

Worst smell . . . burnt microwave popcorn.  The stench that will not die.

I used to love the smell of burning rubber when I was younger, but not so much these days. Not sure why, 'cept maybe coming down with old man's nose.

I have one of those Oreck air purifiers. I like the way it smells after washing the ion grill.

This time of year, the honey suckles are in bloom. That never gets old, no matter how bad my hay fever gets.

I don't know anything about sniffing wine or champagne, but I enjoy it. Probably the only thing I miss about drinking.

I can't stand the smell of paper. Too many years of busting my a** in binderies. I've got a friend who works as a graphic designer for a print shop. Claims he loves the smell of new business cards. It bugs me.

And, of course, long time readers should know, I'm very apprehensive of anybody who wears Aremis.

Worst smell . . . burnt microwave popcorn.  The stench that will not die.

At my old job, it seemed like every day some idiot put a bag of popcorn in the breakroom microwave for 5 minutes or more.
(everyone knows you should only nuke microwave popcorn for about 2.5 to 3 minutes)
That burned popcorn smell would make its way through our part of the building and linger for hours...sometimes until the next day.

I don't like the smell of babies. Not just a loaded diaper or, the smell of milk & puke on their breath, but that distinct aroma that only babies have which makes me sick. (sigh) But what're ya gonna do? I mean, they're babies. They can't help it, kinda like men.

I'm not sure why, but there's something I find strangely sentimental, warm & inviting about someone whose house reeks of too d*&% many dogs, none of which has ever had a real bath.

I like the smell of the country, and the woods.

I ab-so-freakin'-lutely CAN NOT stand the smell of someone who hasn't bathed in about a week. Smelly, stinky body is just vile and gross. (You hear me Amish on Saturday afternoon ... hear me ... take a damn bath!!)

Likes: A salty ocean breeze on the beach, pipe tobacco (even though I don't smoke), freshly baked bread, oranges and strangely enough, Chevron Multigrade Delo 400 15w40 diesel engine oil.

Dislikes: anything poop related, diapers (clean or dirty), wet dog, doggie breath, spoiled food and my Aunt Joanne.

There's something about the smell of sage that I find funny, as in Ha-Ha funny. :bouncegiggle:

I don't have that much experience with sage, but the reason I find it funny is because the people I meet who try it don't either. :twirl:

It doesn't matter if it's a big bowl, or a teencie little ash tray. They'll light it up thinking it's no different than incense, that it'll just smolder discretely in the background, leaving behind a sickeningly sweet aroma just strong enough to cover the smell of whatever the hell else they've been smoking, only to act all surprised & nervous when they see the room getting all smokey & stinkie, :buggedout: & they snatch the bowl up & make a mad dash for the nearest exit before they set off the fire alarm. :teddyr:

Yep RC, I've been there and smelled that, thus totall agreeing with you.

I've noted B.O. coming up and yeah I've passed some people that could knock a skunk out with their odor.

Some more favs I thought of;
Lilacs
Certain parts of the supermarket (mainly the bread isle)
Garden shops
Fresh mulch
Pipe Tobacco

Some more least favs;
Boston (it, like many cities, is a mix of back bay, exhaust and god knows what else)
Port-a-Pottys (especially in the hot summer sun)
Cigarette smokers (no offense smokers but it kind of clings to you)
Grease Traps
Cauliflower or Cabbage cooking

My tackle box, it belonged to my grandfather, then to my dad, and now it's mine. It has a distinct and pleasant aroma that brings back a lot of happy memories for me, not just of dad and grandpa but also of fishing and having fun with my wife and daughter. I also like the aroma of good cooking, anybody's cooking. The smell of the Tumbleweed theater, the place had to be 30 - 40 years old when I started going there to see movies in the 50's and it had a pleasant musty kind of smell that I remember to this day, it got torn down in the late 70's, it's now a shopping center.
One smell I find revolting is the odor produced by a piece of red oak that has become bound up in a saw blade and started to burn, it can make me gag.

Love the smell of a fresh rain, the first one in the spring is usually the best.  Once I was up and walking around outside at about 5:00 in the morning, the smell of the dewey grass was just amazing.  And microwave popcorn.  Actually that artificial butter they put on it.  I've got a can of no-stick spray that smell like that.  Pipe tobacco is great, cinnamon rolls too.

Bad:  Once caught a mole out in the yard.  Tossed him in the garbage.  Two days later I got within three feet of the garbage can and absolutely gagged.

Those out houses at he public acsesses at a lake. GAWD!!! Loaded with mosquitos and spiders...smells like Hell on Earth! When you look into the toilet, you see big nasty clumps of who knows what. I'm always afraid some nasty creature is going to jump up and crawl up my ass like some kinda weird alien movie thing. So I try to poop with my ass not quite touching the seat. And I try not to breath through my nose.

Interesting that microwave popcorn has come up a couple of times. One of the main ingredients in artificial butter flavouring is manufactured at a chemical plant in my hometown - along with things like motor oil additives, seed treatments, synthetic rubber, pest control products, and agent orange, although that one was a few decades ago.

The chemical is called diacetyl, which is apparently found naturally in real butter. However, this stuff is artificially produced in vast quantities. Ask anyone who has been around to smell this, and they'll tell you that a teeny-tiny amount of the stuff smells like butter. A whole lot of it.....will kill your appetite in a hurry.

According to wikipedia, it is also apparently the cause of 'popcorn lung' - one of the risks of working in the microwave popcorn industry.

I love the smell of Tide laundry powder.  Sadly, we don't get it here :bluesad:

I love floral scents, especially Diorissimo perfurme by Christian Dior.  It's my favourite, but it's hella expensive.  Years ago, an older man I was dating bought me some for xmas and he said when he smelled it, it reminded him of me.  Awwww :smile:   Since then, I count it as my signature scent.

I also love Yardley's perfumes April Violets and Lily of the Valley.  And there's a body butter by The Body Shop called "Moringa".  It's just divine and I'm going to buy some this week.

As for bad smells - dog s**t/chook poo/cow manure etc, musk perfumes like Samsara, mandarins, vomit, parmesan or other highly woofy cheese, cigarette smoke and B.O.  There are probably others, but that's all I can think of right now.

THE CRABS AROUND HERE CAN POLE VAULT

One of my favorite scents is the smell that are on some bag gloves that I used when I could still train.  It's just on the inside it's remains how much hard work I put into my training before.  I sorta get the same scent from my sparring gear that I use since it also reminds me how hard and how much effort I would into hard sparring.

One of my least favorite smells is this disinfectant that this doctor's office used that I used to visit.  It smelled so bad, it was like musky bad deodorant.  It was horrible, and what made it worse was that I had to be in the room that they used it in for a long time while I waited for the doctor to come in.

Good... coffee, unburned tobacco, hyacinths, roses, home baked cookies, fresh mowed grass, rain in a dry place like the desert (rain here in oregon is not so sweet smelling) some odd favorites are swimming pools and skunk about a 1/2 mile away.

bad... Skunk WITHIN 1/2 mile, patchoulli, too strong/too artificial air fresheners, burned garlic, burning cigars, rotting meat.

I read a study in the New Scientist mag a while back on what smells men find the biggest turn on.  Interestingly enough, it's food.

So the tip for us women is, forget the florals and go for the cookies, chocolate, vanilla, cream, apple pie or cinnamon smells.

What do you guys have to say about that?

As much as I love the smell of bacon I don't think it's going to make me be attracted towards someone of the opposite sex.

Karma though for the video.

Favorite smell: fresh cut grass in the Spring... which is hard to come by anymore living in a mecca of concrete and pavement.  :bluesad:

Hated smell: either the cat little box after 2 weeks, any kind of AXE body spray, or the smell of food items after they've been sitting in the crisper drawer so long that they've melted into primordial ooze. :buggedout:

I love the smell of coffee percolating when i first wake up. The research room at the library has a rich old smell that i love.
 As far as perfumes, I've been wearing chanel no. 5 since I was about fourteen years old.  i aquaint it with class and pearls so I always wear it when i go out. If I'm just bumming around the house I'll use Warm Vanilla Sugar as a body spray. My daughter, who is about to turn seven has just discovered body spays and wears something similar to Cotton Candy which is fitting for her. She had some that was gummi bear scented that just drove me crazy as she smelled like a big pitcher of kool-aid. Thankfully that phase didn't' last long...

As far as least favorite scents, the mental health facility where i recently had to put my mom doesn't necessarily smell bad, but it has its own scent which i can't stand. Hopefully she gets to come home soon.
Wal-Mart also has its own particular scent that makes me somewhat nauseated, I'm not sure what it is. Maybe its the scent of desolation it brings to small town businesses.
