Title: Worst Or Most Useless Gifts You've Received
Post by: Mr. DS on May 11, 2008, 06:44:08 AM
Have you ever received a gift and thought to yourself "what were these people thinking" either at the time or in retrospect?  I was in a conversation about this the other day and immediately I thought of what people brought when my son was born.  By the end of the first week we literally had over 10 teddy bears and over 25 outfits that he never used/touched. All of which we gave away to charity recently.  Hence, it was a nice thought but most stuffed animals are a bit useless when you think about it.  That and I think most parents would want to buy their kid's outfits.

I found that the best gift for new parents have hardly a monetary value to them.  For example, bringing over a hot meal or picking up the essentials like diapers/wipes.  Gift certificates to stores seem to have been a blessing at that time as well.

Those are just examples of a time when we received a barrage of useless gifts.  Do you have a similar experience?  It doesn't have to be centered around a newborn.

I was pretty lucky when my son was little.  I got money from people because they didn't know what to buy.  If I did get gifts, my mother would pass along the message ofwhat I actually needed and I ended up getting that.  My grandmother would knit long pants with the feet in them, but she worked without a pattern so the pants were always a little odd.  Still, the thought was there and I was grateful to her for it.  The pants ended up in the St Vinnies bin.

As for myself, I got an X-Files clock for xmas in the mid 90s from my then brother in law.  It's black plastic in squished oval shape and it has the X-Files logo on the fact with just the hands and no numbers.  I used it for a while, but ended up taking it down when I bought a more stylish one.

I think I still have it, but I have no idea what I'm going to do with it.

Sell it on ebay.  I'm sure there's some X-Files geek "out there" who will pay you for it.   :tongueout:

When my Uncle, my godfather no less, actually remembered my birthday when I was young and everyone gets you something (looking back I should be happy I got anything from people I didn't live with seeing as how some people are too busy trying to have food on their birthday, but I digress) it would be some worthless piece of junk, it's all stored away in a box under my bed, sentimetal value, ya know.

someone once bought me a vacuum cleaner, which is nice but I have all hard wood floors throughout my house. I've been thinking of relocating though, so maybe it will come in handy at the next pad.

As far as worst christmas gifts, last year my aunt gave my brother a set of long underwear that was red complete with the flap in the back. It was hilarious, not to mention he lived thirty minutes from miami at the time.
