Title: Hey! It's That Guy!
Post by: Ash on May 11, 2008, 06:23:00 PM
Ever notice those actors that you see all the time in movies but no one ever seems to know their names?

Like this guy...

Erick Avari
(http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/6987/erikavarimw2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

My friends and I call him the "Man-ee-way Guy" because that's what he says in the movie Stargate.   :teddyr:

Or how about this guy?

Kevin Sussman
(http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/7857/11614159451press2122007uk0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

It seems like I spot him in every other movie and even TV commercials but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who knows his actual name.

Or how about Sean Whalen?

(http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/8423/mv5bmtg1mjc0odc5mf5bml5uz0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

This guy pops up in tons of movies and usually plays some kind of "weaselly" character.
I never knew his name until I decided to write this thread.   :tongueout:

How about you?
Know of any other actors who appear in lots of movies but nobody knows who they are?

James Rebhorn- http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0714310/#actor1970
There's no picture I can upload here, but there's some on his IMDB site.  He was in Meet the Parents, Kojak, Law and Order, Pete and Pete and a slew of others.  He's one of those guys I'd see and be like, "That guy's in everything."

Christopher McDonald- Unfortunately, not a lot of people seem to know his name.  But, the dude's a brilliantly underrated actor who's got a list of credits a mile long.

My favorite, "Hey! It's that guy!" was always Nicholas Worth before his death last year just two days after my birthday. For those that don't remember him from name, Nick was the bald goon in Darkman, the gay bond dodger in The Glove, the killer in Don't Answer the Phone, a thug in The Naked Gun, and had 80 or so other roles during his time on Earth.

First name to come to mind was Mickey Jones, a guy you could practically expect to see in any movie with bikers, hillbillies, convicts or other rough-looking customers.

For that matter, you could almost say the same thing about Bob Tessier.

My favorite, who it seemed used to be in every movie with action sequences, is Al "Ka Bong" Leong.  Here's his IMDB page (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0502959/) and his official(?) website (http://www.alleong.com/index.html).

The parts that jump to mind include (in chronological order):

  • hatchet man in "Big Trouble in Little China (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0090728/)"
  • the guy who tortures Mel Gibson (go Al!) in "Lethal Weapon (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0093409/)"
  • Genghis Khan in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0096928/)"
  • the bad guy that steals the candy bar in "Die Hard (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0095016/)"

You will recognize him when you see him.

That Guy actors rule...theres plenty but the first one I can think of this morning is Larry Cedar.

I remember that guy from Square One TV and he really made a niche for himslef as a that guy actor.

It's a bit difficult to decide who qualifies as a "that guy" in this particular group. Many of the character actors who are known by face only to the average viewer are well-known to enthusiasts like us.

For example, Michael Berryman:
He's "that guy" to many people, but a well-known actor around here.

I have another, L.Q. Jones. He made several films with Peckinpah, then popped up here and there on small bits, even on TV. He usually plays parts were he wears cowboy clothes, even in contemporary movies. Here's an interview and pics:

http://www.einsiders.com/features/interviews/lqjones.php

He also directed the cult sci-fi movie "A boy and his dog", and can be seen on small roles on stuff like "Casino", "The Patriot" (Yep, Seagal's film) or the first Xorro movie with Antonio Banderas.

Good Thread.
There's this one guy, kinda short, a bit hammy.
Recently married, to a pretty cute chick.
Gets excited a lot.
Is into vaguely cultish religions.
Jumps on couches...
Oh, wait.
Never mind.

Edit:
I have one now. I see him all the time, most recently as Larry the Health Inspector's retarded neighbor.

Joel McKinnon Miller

I remember him as the garage attendant from The Truman Show.  He also plays Don on HBO's Big Love.

Jack Elam is amazing!

The first 15 minutes of Once Upon A Time in the West is priceless! Seriously, every actor must wish they were as fascinatingly ugly as Jack Elam.

Also, Marshall Bell really creeps me out. Every time he shows up you know something really bad is just around the corner. I agree he's a great actor, but never has such an ordinary looking guy projected such menace. If you haven't seen Behind the Mask yet, go watch it.

Matt Frewer

He's kind of an interesting one because he was an 80s icon (albeit in a heavily made up and processed form), then seemed to get more obscure, doing guest appearances on TV, voice work, and smaller movie roles. I suppose he's a good character actor who happened to get lucky with a character. It's probably because of the Max Headroom makeup that he's not as well known as he might be, but I imagine it also kept him from being too closely associated with the character after moving on.

Freddie Hice is in TONS of stuff. You'd probably best remember him as Bobby in Robocop ("Can you fly, Bobby?"). Technically, he's a stunt guy, but you can always pick him out in movies as Henchman #3 and things like that. Same thing with Al Leong, only it's Asian Henchman #3 for him. He's probably best remembered as Genghis Kahn in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Brendan Hughes:

He would pop up in movies throughout the mid 80s and early 90s ever so often.

Ha! I always love seeing that guy in movies. He is instantly recognizable, I remember him most of all from Die Hard. I also love that his nickname is Al 'Ka Bong'  :teddyr:

One guy I had to do a little research on to find out his name was Anthony James. He always plays a killer/hitman/thug, and with his lanky frame, and angular features makes a very frightening bad guy! I remember him mostly from his turn as the leader of the baddies in The Ravagers (1979), and numerous tv shows. He also plays the chauffeur in Burnt Offerings. His last film role was in Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven. Apparently he has retired from acting and is an artist.

John Glover kind of lost his "That Guy" status with his recurring role on Smallville, although that role still fits with the smarmy businessmen and creepy bad guys he plays so well.

Anthony James had a very memorable cameo in Naked Gun 2 1/2. He played his normal thug hitman role, but halfway through his assassination becomes caught up in singing "Feelings."

I also caught him as the main bad guy in a tawdry movie '70s film called The Teacher, where an older woman seduces TV's Dennis the Menace!

Cool thanks Mofo, its been a long time since I've seen any of the Naked Gun films so I'll have to look for him in it.

Brian Doyle Murray

I watched him pop up in movies for years before I ever made the connection that he's Bill Murray's brother. Shows real talent if you can have a more famous relative and still manage to achieve "that guy" status.

I actually had a "that guy" moment when Morgan Sheppard showed up on a Criminal Minds episode I watched earlier tonight.
I remembered immediately that he's probably one of the top "that guys" for me. Of course, as with many of the actors in this thread, I read up on him some time ago and he technically stopped being "that guy." So really, I had a "hey, it's Morgan Sheppard" moment. Same thing though. :teddyr:

How about Marc Lawrence, who always played a tough guy, mobster type. My biggest recollection of him is the 1978 Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn movie Foul Play.

My favorite "Hey! Its That Guy" would have to be George "Buck" Flowers. He usually played a drunk or homeless person. His probably most famous scene was in Back To The Future as the homeless man(Red) who is sleep on the bench and yells out "Crazy drunk driver!"

He also played the crazy homeless man in Escape From New York

Not sure if they've been brought up but pretty much ALL the guys from Spinal Tap are "that guy" actors.

I'd say Michael Mckean (aka David St. Hubbins) more than them all though.  He's in EVERTHING it seems.  They're all graet character actors.
