Title: Favorite Firefly Ep
Post by: ulthar on June 02, 2008, 12:54:46 PM
Please, no spoilers, because I just started watching the series last night, but I was wondering what everyone's favorite episode of Firefly is.

My wife enjoyed the first (real) pilot, "Serenity," as well.  I was wondering if she'd like it...sometimes sci fi is hit or miss with her.

"Trash" is really good.  Can't say much about it because anything would be a spoiler.  Just some great writing and a fantastic plot.

"Ariel" is another good one.  Lots of high tech stuff in a futuristic hospital, their usual schemes, lots'a fun.

Favourite ep is really hard in an excellent series like this. But one that stands out is where the gang go to a planet to do a job and Jayne finds out he's hailed as a hero by the inhabitants.

I love Jaynestown! Also like War Stories (the followup to The Train Job). The argument between Wash and Mal over Zoe is hilarious.

My wife has put up with my Science Fiction addiction for 27 years. She actually likes the ones that have a lot of action, but if it gets to cerebral she just nods off.

I always felt that The Train Job was one of the best.  Not only does it contain the always great Gregg Henry as the Sheriff of a nowhere town, it also has one of the most classic Mal moments of all time towards the end.  The way he takes care of one of the goons just gets me every time.

I find after three episodes, I'm already addicted to this show.  We've watched "Serenity," "The Train Job" (know what you mean, Skaboi, that was pretty cool) and "Bushwhacked."

Both my wife and I are wondering how in the world we missed this when it aired.  She'd never heard of it 'til I got Disk 1 from Netflix.  But then again, 2002 was a pretty hectic year for us...we probably went a few months without watching TV.

I also loved the ep where they go and help those girls in the brothel who are being menaced by the sheriff and his gang.  The way Jayne reacts to the girl he chooses is awesome.  Now THERE is a guy who loves women

Fox may a big deal out of signing Whedon to develop a series for them, then they turned around and hardly promoted it. They dissed him by showing them out of order, with the pilot being the last ep shown.  There were three eps that weren't televised.

When it did well in DVD sales, Whedon convinced Universal to make the movie Serenity, which by the way, does a very good job of wrapping up the series.

I think my favorite episode has to be "Our Mrs. Reynolds".
The character of Saffron was great, and you really see the sexual tension between Mal and Inara.
Plus it sets up "Trash" which was another terrific episode.

Nevermind the fact that Saffron was hot!

We finished the series tonight.

Only two episodes that we did not care for all that much: "Shindig" and "Message."

One cool thing about "Message," though;  the music during the funeral scene was the composer's way of saying goodbye to the series, since by that point they knew it was cancelled.  It's a beautiful piece.  I thought that was a cool footnote, anyway.

As for favorite episode?  Couldn't name ONE.  We both got so addicted to this show that once we started watching, we couldn't stop until it was over.  The last disk arrived from Netflix today, and we've already watched all three episodes.

Next up is the movie SERENITY.  Probably watch it next week.

Firefly was a great series abused by airing it out of order and preempting it for specials along with constantly shifting it's time slot around. It had real promise.

I haven't seen it a long time and I rank it up there with Babylon 5 and FarScape, so I'd be hard pressed to say which eps was my favorite, they were all good if I recall.

The final movie is good too, I won't spoil it for you but it is used to tie up loose ends and answer a few questions, albeit there were a few left unanswered.

I know at one time the creator of the show was trying to find a new outlet for it, but that has been a couple of years ago.

Dead long before it's time. My wife not a big Sci-fi fan either but she got hooked on Babylon 5, FarScape and Firefly as they actually had a story.

Serenity is great.  Make sure you watch the outtakes, you'll laugh your a$$ off.

I'm going to have to go with Jaynestown. Love the fact that going into it it's a fun, lighthearted comedic adventure, but by the end actually a pretty serious, almost even "powerful" story.

But really, the "best" Firefly episode is Out of Gas. Although it kind of comes across as blatantly trying to be an Emmy-winner, that really was the episode that would have won an Emmy.
