Post by: Jordan on June 07, 2008, 01:03:25 AM
First off.... DVD Drive-In  (http://www.dvddrive-in.com/)rocks and is an invaluable resource for finding out way ahead of time when the "good stuff" is coming out. Here is the info on the upcoming double-feature set of "Rodan" and "War of the Gargantuas" from Classic Media:

Quote
On September 9, Classic Media will unleash their long-awaited releases of RODAN and THE WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS as a two-disc double feature set. Here are the specs for each title that we have so far – RODAN: Languages: Japanese/English, Subtitles: English, English Version (72 mins.), Japanese Version (82 mins.). THE WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS: Languages: Japanese/English, Subtitles: English, Japanese Version (88 mins.), English Version (92 mins.). Special Features: "Bringing Godzilla Down To Size" Documentary (60 mins.). Special thanks to August Ragone for delivering this news!

If I start saving my loose change now, I'll have more than enough for that set by the time September rolls around! Woohoo! I can't wait to get my claws on these discs. I've had both versions of each film for a while, but not I can toss out my DVD-Rs for legit Region 1 discs.... I couldn't be happier.  :teddyr:

This is excellent news.  The Godzilla DVDs by Classic Media are exactly what I had said, probably eight years ago, I would do if I could create any specific DVD release.  "Rodan" is a great monster movie, and "War of the Gargantuas" - well, it's legendery just for "The Words Get Stuck in My Throat."

Amen, brother.

While we are at it, is it too much to hope that Classic Media manages to secure the rights to "Reptilicus" for the same treatment they have been giving other monster movies?

Sadly MGM owns the rights to Reptilicus (which is now OOP). And in turn MGM is owned by Sony, so we may never see the uncut version of Reptilicus or the cut we're all familiar with.
As for Mothra, Sony owns the rights to that one, as well. So I suppose we have a long wait until these films come out on DVD.

War of the Gargantuas is cool, but weren't Mothra and Rodan already released?  I can see the Rodan dvd as I type here at my computer.

The "Rodan" DVD is OK, but Classic Media's releases so far have blown away any previous version in terms of quality.  The original "Mothra" has not had a DVD release in the US yet.

The "Rodan" disc that you speak of WingedSerpent was the previous Classic Media release from the horrific "Ultimate Godzilla Collection" boxed set. (Watchable pan-scan transfer with awful "5.1 Surround Sound" that was apparently recorded in a cave.) The new release will have widescreen prints of the American and Original Japanese versions of the film, along with extras, and it will be worth picking up. Of that I can assure you.

"Mothra" only saw release here in the States on VHS and has yet to make a Region 1 DVD debut (as Andrew pointed out). However, "Rebirth of Mothra" and "Rebirth of Mothra 2" are both available (on a double feature DVD) from Sony Pictures.
