Title: Speaking of movies I never saw... (Fisher King)
Post by: BTM on June 12, 2008, 01:35:05 PM

Has anyone ever seen this?  It's just one of those films that kind of slipped through the cracks as far as my viewing habits go.  Is it worth hunting up?

Thanks!

This is one I also wanted to see way back when it was new, but still have not seen it.  My usual track record is as follows:

* If I don't see a movie within the first couple weeks of its theatrical release, I generally end up missing it in the theater and awaiting the DVD release (or, years ago, the VHS release).  RECENT EXAMPLE: RAMBO

* If I don't buy the DVD soon after it is released, I generally forget about the movie for a long time.  About 5 years (or longer) after the DVD release, I'll say, "Hey, I still haven't seen that one" and I'll end up buying it then.  RECENT EXAMPLE:  LEGENDS OF THE FALL  (bought it months ago and still haven't watched it).

I'll get around to THE FISHER KING some day . . .

I saw it in the theater. It's all right, but if you want to see it because it's a Gilliam film, you might be a bit disappointed. It doesn't really look like a Gilliam movie, and it isn't really as good as most of his other films. There are flashes of his usual brilliance, but they are few and far between. And if you see it, I'll warn you: You'll see more of Robin Williams than you ever wanted to see; he dances naked in the moonlight and you see, um, something bouncing that you probably don't want to see :buggedout:. Or at least I don't.

It's a very good movie if you enjoy Terry Gilliam/Robin Williams weirdness.   Jeff Bridges is also good as the guilt-ridden ex DJ  .

I enjoyed this one very much indeed, because it stays true to Fairy Tale Cambellian Mythology rules about what makes a compelling story -- plus it touches on the possibility of parallel worlds much like Neil Gaiman does:  Is the Fisher King really Divine/Touched by God, or his he a raving lunatic?  It's an old old theme, but still works.  I really need to see it again, as it's been quite awhile and I'm sure I've forgotten a lot of it.
peter johnson/denny raving lunatic

Great flick.   Tremendous performances and typically great Gilliam direction.

Got it on DVD ... great film if you are a Gilliam fan.

I think I agree with Derf.  Worth seeing because it's a Gilliam film, but definitely one of his weakest films.  The talents of Gilliam and Williams didn't mesh well, IMO.

I missed it in the theater, but caught it on TV. Each year a number of films are voted as being one of the year's 10 best and one of the year's 10 worst by the critics. This is one such film. Which should tell you something about it.

Peter's right-- an ancient theme, and a great movie, if only because of a magical performance by Bridges.  Rent it.
