Could be...

...but, in case it's not:

Sounds like Star Wars.

I gave him a karma point just for making me smile.

But the title of the film, yikes, I dunno.  :teddyr:

"its about a boy who lives on a desert planet" - is there also a telepathic dog? Could be "A Boy and his Dog", then.

"rescue a princess" - Might be "The Princess Bride"

"on a space station" - "Outland"?

"his mentor gets killed" - "Bloodsport III" pops into mind

"destroyed the space station" - "Moonraker"!

"with a magic power" - I dunno, one of the Potter movies?

"confront a robot black suited lord of something" - That sounds a bit like Maximilian ("The Black Hole")...or was he red?

Summed up: "A Princess Boy and his Black Dog on the Outland Moon III"?

Could be "Message from Space" it was a Japanese Star Wars rippoff that came out about a year after the original.

Did it have a sailing ship in space?

Sounds like Star Wars to me.  But then again numerous knock-offs were made in the 80s.  You might have seen Space Raiders, Battle Beyond the Stars, Starcrash, or The Humanoid.

Star Wars: Luke Skywalker, on the desert planet whateverthehellitwascalled, is put in charge of two droids his uncle bought from the Jawas, a gang of cloaked dwarves that roam the desert in a mobile chop-shop, but when he's cleaning R2D2 he triggars a message- "Help me Obi Wan!"- and ends up leaving planet whateverthehellitwascalled with "Old Ben", who becomes his mentor in the ways of the Jedi.  Aboard the Millenium Falcon, this being the ship they hire to take them away from  planet whateverthehellitwascalled, Ben teaches Luke how to skillfully manipulate his lightsaber with his eyes closed.  Now the Falcon is  captained by a grumpy dude called Han Solo and his shagfoot friend Chewbacca.  No sooner do they go to the planet where the girl in the "Help me Obi Wan!" message askes them to go than, WHAM, they're snared in a tractor beam and taken aboard a moon sized space station whereupon they end up rescuing Princess Leia.  And the space station?  Well that was called the Death Star, and you know if they give something a name in a movie that means it's a major character, so they, of course, have to come back to destroy it.  All while being menanced by the forces of the Empire as led by this guy wearing a black S&M outfit and a samurai helmet called Darth Vader, who is a Lord of the Sith.

Two sequels followed and three prequels, but the less said about the prequels the better.

Ring any bells?

No worries.  This thread inspired me to take my response and expand it into a proper review.  Well perhaps "proper" isn't quite the right word: Tongue-in-Cheek Reviews #1 - STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE  (http://cosmic-cinema.blogspot.com/2008/06/tongue-in-cheek-reviews-1-star-wars-new.html)

Holy COW!   This movie was big big news when I was a tyke.   It came to our local theater (on an army base in Germany in the late 70's), and all my friends saw it and it was all they couldd talk about.  That was oe of the few times I was sick on Saturday, and couldn't attend.  I always regretted missing it.  Frankly I don't feel so bad now.
