Title: "Un Chien Andalou".....uh, Yeah.
Post by: KYGOTC on June 17, 2008, 07:54:09 PM
This french film came out out back in the olden days of the 20's. It's pretty messed up and makes NO SENSE at all, but its only 17 minuetes long, so its good to watch once and then maybe watch NEVER again.

I'll sum it up to spare you the aggony.

*A lady gets her eye ball sliced open. (its cool, but it doesn't explain why, and then later shes fine.)

*A guy eats some ladies armpit hair.

*Some ants crawl out of some guys open hand wound.

*A guy feels some boobies.

*And a guy drags around a broken piano with a rope.

Thats it. Pretty.....I dont wanna say "lame" because I usually love weird bizzare stuff, (Forbidden Zone) But this one doesnt even have any words or plot.
Feedback? First caller. *beep*

It's Dali. It's not supposed to make sense in the conventional way. It's not a favorite of mine, but it is interesting. Nice images, no real plot. Not something I'd watch often, but definitely worth watching through a time or two, if just to see early special effects.

What, you never had a dream before?

You forgot to mention that the boobies turned into a butt.  That has to be Beavis & Butthead's greatest fantasy.

And you forgot when the man drags the grand piano with the dead donkey on top and the two priests holding on to the ropes.

If it had gone on for 90 minutes I agree it would have been agony.  But 17 minutes was about the perfect length.

Otherwise, what Derf said.  Except it's something of a favorite of mine.  And many of the movies we all love could never have been made if this 1928 film hadn't proven that shocking images alone without narrative cohesion could carry a film.

If you like this one, try Dali/Bunuel's next little opus L'AGE D'OR (1931). It's an hour long!

It was condemned by the Vatican, so if you're Catholic watch it at your own risk.

Oh, poo!  I was going to cite "L'Age D'or" too!
This film IS a favorite of mine -- I love genuine, undiluted surrealism -- ever seen the Brothers Quay?
For your next film, I suggest "Le Sangre du Poete", by Jean Cocteau -- try to look for a crisp transfer, as some of the prints are pretty washed out, and you need to be able to see the veins in the wings of the black insect angel who bears the dead away from the snowball fight . . . what?

My own feeling about BLOOD OF A POET is... it was too long.  I'm serious when I say I think UN CHIEN ANDALOU is the perfect length for a surrealist film.  For a longer film I prefer some narrative to keep me going.

I do plan to see L'AGE D'OR, though, even if it turns into a bit of an endurance test.

The Brothers Quay films were pretty to look at, but they didn't really grab me (though I'm willing to give them another try).  On the other hand, I strongly connected Jan Svankmejer's ALICE (precisely because there was that well-known narrative lifeline for me to grab on to when things got too weird...)
