Nope . . . it's not a western (but it sure sounds like one).

Top-billed Gene Hackman (who probably has less than 30 minutes of screen time) is a crooked narc who blackmails washed-up musician and former drug dealer Cisco Pike (Kris Kristofferson) into selling $10,000 worth of high-grade marijuana in 53 hours.  Karen Black (when she used to be in good movies) is Cisco's girlfriend, and Harry Dean Stanton (whose first scene is naked in a bathtub) is a heroin-addicted band member.  Also good in smaller roles are Antonio Fargas (yeah!), Roscoe Lee Browne, Severn Darden, and Joy Bang.

This is a nice, well-acted look at America around the time the hippie culture had peaked and we were plunging (sadly) toward the disco years.  The soundtrack features some good music by Kristofferson and the Sir Douglas Quintet (who had the hit song MENDOCINO, which, unfortunately, is NOT on the soundtrack, but you can listen to MENDOCINO here):

If you're a fan of late 60s / early 70s drug / hippie movies, you might enjoy this one.
