Title: The Howling (1981)

For some reason I always assumed I'd seen this film. but when I was browsing back of the DVD in the shop none of the screenshots looked familiar. I think I was confusing it with The Shining, Company Of Wolves, and American Werewolf In London. so I bought it and thought this was excellent, for a werewolf type horror. One of those films that has a certain something about it that means you can't stop watching it, definite atmosphere, even though some parts border on silly/comical, the ending is very weird too...dunno I just thought I'd throw this one out there - any big fans of this movie on here? anyone think it was a bad movie?

The DVD extras are very good as well, interviews/documentary/deleted scenes/mess ups in filming, (I got the 2xDVD deluxe version)

I love this movie, but I'm a little prejudiced by the fact that it was the first "grown-up" horror film I ever saw in a theater.

I imagine seeing this on a big screen in the dark would be great. I dont think that about too many films, Im normally happy to just watch on TV/laptop/whatever...

I'm sure it was better on the big screen.  At the age of 12 I had never seen a movie with so much sex and violence and it made a huge impression on me for that reason.  I don't remember being scared at all, though, just fascinated.  When I watched it in my 20s on video I remember it living up to my memories as a child.

The sequels were all quite ridiculous and terrible, though.  Don't watch them unless you're prepared for a true bad movie experience!

yeah the director actually slates all the sequels in the documentary in the extras, lol. I had a look around and found THE HOWLING III - Down Under :'The Marsupials', set in Australia...no thanks!

Yes, this is in the "good" category -- but I'd still watch the sequels for the very reason the good Reverent says NOT to!! :  " . . . true badmovie experience"!

Hey, don't misquote me!  I said don't watch "UNLESS" you're in a bad movie mood!  I wouldn't want anybody to go in expecting a HOWLING-like experience.

Although with subtitles like "The Marsupials" and "Your Sister's a Werewolf" I guess no one's likely to be tricked into thinking their going to see a serious installment in the HOWLING series...

I love the original The Howling.   Great performances, a satiric script full of great lines and sterling direction. Not to mention those great werewolf transformation effects.

Just be sure to stay far away from the sequels however.

Torgo... I'm shocked.  You didn't watch the end credits to Howling II?

Actually, you're right. The end credits of Howling II are hilarious.  I like the one where they keep showing Sybil Danning ripping off her shirt for like 30 alternate times.  What a woman back in the day.

Ah Sybil Danning. She did it all. Women in Prison movies, Battle Beyond the Stars, Lou Ferrigno's Hercules. I remember she made a movie called(maybe) LA Bounty, where she played a bounty hunter ala Clint Eastwood in the Man With No Name movies. Where's her commemorative DVD set?

Hey, whats up with all the smiley faces in this movie?

Director Joe Dante said in the commentary track that the smiley faces stickers was a fad that was going on in the late 70's into the early 80's and that it really annoyed him so he thought he would put them in the movie for that reason.   :teddyr:

Still the best Werewolf movie.  I'm beginning to wonder if it will ever get topped.  Mostly great effects work (in the same year as AAWIL at that), a great villain by Robert Picardo, and werewolf characters that are actually interesting on screen and, perhaps, not purely monsters.  It also has a wickedly dark sense of humor that I quite appreciate.

And how can we all not love a movie where Slim Pickens is a werewolf sheriff?

**SPOILERS**

My one serious complaint is a usual one I've made on these boards before.  I'm not quite sure why Stone is so unhappy with her transformation, as from what is portrayed in this movie (and in several of the sequels), there isn't any particular downside for werewolves - the transformation is voluntary, done at will, and the personality changes seem minor (that's up for debate though, as to what occurs with her husband exactly).  But hey, maybe the whole concept of lost humanity bothers some more than others.
