I rented this at Hastings because it looked like the usual sort of  B-grade cheese that I love to fill my evenings with after the wife and kids have gone to bed.  But to my surprise, this one turned out to be a fairly straight, albeit modernized, retelling of the Jeckyl and Hyde story.  Dr. Henry Jeckyl is an idealistic young researcher, engaged to marry a beatiful and wealthy young lady, who is looking for ways to link computers directly into the human brain in order to tap into its powers to heal the body.  In the course of his experiments, he of course decided to hook himself up to his own hard drive, and the result is Mr. Edward Hyde - a yellow-eyed, black-haired, sideburn wearing alter ego who is totally unrestrained by the conventions of morality or societal expectations.

Throw in some midnight club rampages, Hyde's hot stripper girlfriend, an irate father-in-law, several random gratuitous breast shots (BTW, Andrew, is there such thing as a non-random, absolutely-necessary-to-the-plot breast shot???), and a  rather gruesome murder by walking stick, and you have a pretty entertaining film.  Oh, there are some cheesy moments - the CGI renderings of the programs effect on the brain, for instance - but by and large this is a very watchable little movie, head and shoulders above the Brain Damage drek I frequently watch.

 I give it *** 1/2 out of ***** for being a pleasant surprise.
