Title: Need some movie advice! What should I watch?
Post by: dean on July 24, 2008, 09:58:32 AM

Ok so this year's Melbourne International Film Festival starts tomorrow, about 350 films over the next few weeks are playing.

As stated in another thread, I've already locked onto 'A Conversation With George A Romero' who is one of the guests of the festival.  Another I just booked is called DaiNipponjin (http://www.melbournefilmfestival.com.au/films?y=2008&filmsrch=&film_id=8938&pg=53) which has the following description:

Stand-up comedian and actor Hitoshi Matsumoto adds ‘director' to his list of cred-entials with this absurd mockumentary about a mild-mannered man who turns into a mega-sized superhero whenever danger descends on Japan. Played by Matsumoto himself, this man is anything but super on a daily basis - his alter ego is buckling under the pressure of having to face-off with foes live on television while his viewer ratings continue to drop.
A guaranteed cult classic, Dainipponjin maintains its comedic freshness - among many head-scratching moments - from start to finish.

Anyways since Romero is a guest and they're doing a retrospective, they're playing all his films including the upcoming [well here at least] "Diary of the Dead" (http://www.melbournefilmfestival.com.au/films?y=2008&filmsrch=&film_id=8903&pg=65) which I'm also hoping to see.

HOWEVER I was hoping to get some advice from people 'in the know' about where I should focus my viewing this year, and some that may be worth a look.

Films range from "Ozploitation" [Australian exploitation films such as Razorback] to documentaries, 'classy' films, experimental, just plain mental, pretty much the whole hog.  I need a shortlist badly methinks.

Check out the website for MIFF HERE (http://www.melbournefilmfestival.com.au/index.php) check the program listings and let me know what you would see and why!

Please help me out, I'm like a kid at an ice cream store: so many flavours and can't seem to make a decision [other than the wanting to watch them all].

What should I watch?

Last year a friend of mine went and saw Wattstax [I think it was called] and said it was really interesting, so Respect Yourself was on my shortlist, albeit a vague one

Saw Dianipponjin on saturday night, and it was an interesting film, great ending as well, will post a review on it later.

Always wanted to watch THX and I do like Glass's work, didn't notice that one on my first scan through, so if timing suits I might give them a go.

The Wave looks suitably gang-like; it'll probably be on my 'if I'm around at the time' list.

Going to BLIP FESTIVAL: REFORMAT THE PLANET (http://www.melbournefilmfestival.com.au/films?film_id=9588) tonight which is basically a documentary about 8 bit music makers, which the girlfriend wanted to see, and seems up my alley.

Diary of the Dead is one of the only ones left on my list to see so far, but I'm sure there'll be more to come soon.

Thanks for the suggestions!
