Title: The "Guess the Song" game
Post by: BTM on July 24, 2008, 08:33:34 PM
Here's how it goes, I've put all my mp3s in the player, and Hit random to come up with twenty-five songs.  I've posted the first sentence or so of each song, and it's up to your to guess the title and artist (in the case of the songs that have no lyrics, I just hit the button again.)

Now, you can easily cheat and use google, but come on, try not to.

Dunno how hard this will be, my collection isn't very extensive by most standards, after all, I only have a measly 400 mp3s on my computer (all of which I either bought from online services or burned from legally purchased CDs, of course!) :teddyr:

Enjoy!

1.   “You and I in a little toy shop, buy a bag of balloons with the money we’ve got.”

Actually, this is a remix, but if you put the original artist in, it still counts.

2.   “There’s a big brown cloud in the city, and the countryside’s a sin.”

3.   “I get up in the evening, and I ain’t got nothing to say.”

4.   “I lie awake and dread the lonely nights, I’m not alone.  I wonder if these heavy eyes can face the unknown.”

5.   “Sometimes, I feel the fear of uncertainty stinging clear, and I can't help but ask myself how much I let the fear take the wheel and steer.”

6.   “We’re not going to take it.” (That’s a giveaway.)

7.   “When in the springtime of the year, when the trees are crowned with leaves.”

8.   “One by one, stings my eyes, each is gone, each a disguise.”

9.   “I am the passenger and I ride and I ride.”

10.   “Well, I don’t know why I came here tonight.”

11.   “You gave me this, made me give. Your silver grin, still sticking it in.”

12.   “Yeah, desert sky, dream beneath a desert sky. The rivers run but soon run dry.
We need new dreams tonight.”

13.   “Nihilistic mystics, apostolic alcoholics, messianic manics, cataclysmic and prolific. In the age of super-boredom, hype and mediocrity, celebrate relentlessness, menace to society.”

This is actually a remix of the song, first lyrics in the original version are different, but bother versions contain this verse.

14.   “I can't reject this empty hole, I cannot count the bloody cost.”

15.    “Since I was born they couldn't hold me down, another misfit kid, another burned-out town.”

16.   “Lucky you were born that far away so we could both make fun of distance.”

17.   “Closing time, open all the doors and let you into the world.”

18.    “And in the end we shall achieve in time, the thing they call divine.”

19.   “No one’s going to give it away.  They make it hard for the people today.”

20.   “Wake up, grab a brush and put on a little make up.”

21.   “Between the liquor, the bend and the noise in my head. Between your mind and my crime.”

22.   “This magic moment, so different and new, was like any other, until I meet you.”

Another giveaway, but bonus if you can guess which version of the song I have on my playlist.

23.   “Every breath you take, every move you make, every bond you break, every step you take, I’ll be watching you.”

24.   “Big wheels keep on turning, carry me home to see my kin.”

25.   “You tell me I can't slow down, you tell where I gotta be, I spin into the darkness
but I swear that I can't see a thing in front of me.”

23: Every Breath You Take - The Police

Yep!

Course, I always thought the second song was kind of funny, they make stalking seem so sensual.

I remember one time I was thinking about that song and came up with some more lyrics to it...

"Every shower you take,
every date you make,
everytime you drive,
no matter where you hide,
I'll be watching you."

I mean, I figure go the full nine and show how creepy this dude really is!  :)

1.  99 Red Ballons.

That particular version is by Goldfinger.

If the first one is actually 99 red ballons and it is a sort of cover/translation of the 80s song by German singer Nena it's ahelluva lot different...

Actually the Nena title was 99 LuftBallons and Americanized title was 99 Red Balloons.

Well, like I said, I have about a little less than 400 mp3s on my computer, of them twelve are songs by KMFDM, so 25 random chances out of 400 songs, producing three by the same band is about... ahh, hell, someone else can do the math.

And yes, Closing Time is by SemiSonic.

Okay, I'm going to post some more on these, help everyone out... :)

2.   “There’s a big brown cloud in the city, and the countryside’s a sin.  The price of life is too high to give up, it's gotta come down again.  The worldwide war is over and done, and the dream of peace comes through.”

7.   “When in the springtime of the year, when the trees are crowned with leaves.  When the ash and oak, and the birch and yew are dressed in ribbons fair.  When owls call the breathless moon in the blue veil of the night ”

8.   “One by one, stings my eyes, each is gone, each a disguise.  Smiling, so aware
Precious moments are so rare, Boiled thoughts, evaporated - gone. Can't bear the loss of never loving you So jaded, so wrong ”

This one might be the toughest on the list, get the feeling the group isn't exactly the most well known.

10.   “Well, I don’t know why I came here tonight. I've got a feeling something ain't right.  I'm so scared in case I fall off my chair, And I'm wondering how I'll get down the stairs,”

11.   “You gave me this, made me give. Your silver grin, still sticking it in. You have some machine soul machine. Soul of Machine. The longest kiss, feeling furniture days ”

12.   “Yeah, desert sky, dream beneath a desert sky. The rivers run but soon run dry.
We need new dreams tonight. Desert rose, dreamed I saw a desert rose. Dress torn in ribbons and in bows Like a siren she calls to me”

13.   “Nihilistic mystics, apostolic alcoholics, messianic manics, cataclysmic and prolific. In the age of super-boredom, hype and mediocrity, celebrate relentlessness, menace to society.”

Can't believe NO ONE guessed this one yet...

Okay, second line, "This is counter-culture from the underground, eternal revolution this is our sound."

16.   “Lucky you were born that far away so we could both make fun of distance. Lucky that I love a foreign land for the lucky fact of your existence. Baby I would climb the Andes solely To count the freckles on your body. Never could imagine there were only Ten Million ways to love somebody”

18.    “And in the end we shall achieve in time, the thing they call divine. And all the stars will shine for me When all is well and well is all for all. Forever after, living in the meantime wait and see."

19.   “No one’s going to give it away.  They make it hard for the people today.  To get what you want, you've got to do it yourself.  Don't be afraid to drive the nail in the wood. Or drink the bottle if it tastes so good. You'll go the distance. You never thought that you could."

25.   “You tell me I can't slow down, you tell where I gotta be, I spin into the darkness
but I swear that I can't see a thing in front of me. You're closing in behind. I've got headlight in my eyes. Don't get too close to me, can't you see that we'll collide”

All correct, except for some reason, the version I have says "Stuck" is by Bob Dylan.. but maybe the file info is wrong... it's the same version from Reservoir Dogs though...

Yeah, "Stuck in the Middle with You" is definitely Steeler's Wheel.

Here's a game if you have your own playlist. I filled it out several months ago on MySpace.

...

Bullet in the Head

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Put your music player on shuffle.
2. Press forward for each question.
3. Use the song title as the answer to the question even if it doesn't make sense. NO CHEATING!

I've done this before, but what the hell. (I am going to cheat, in that I will use the first song that makes contextual sense. I've got a lot of instrumentals, songs with nonsense titles and comedy bits in my playlist.)

WHAT'S YOUR OUTLOOK ON LIFE?
"Get Up Offa That Thing" James Brown - It works on so many levels!

WHAT DO YOUR FRIENDS THINK OF YOU?
"Where's Your Head At?" Basement Jaxx - Needs no explanation.

WHAT DO STRANGERS THINK OF YOU?
"Clubbed to Death" Rob Dougan - Wow, that's rough.

WHAT YOUR EX'S THINK OF YOU?
"Could We?" Cat Power - Aw, that's nice. (I don't think they really think that.)

HOW WILL YOUR LOVE LIFE BE IN THE FUTURE?
"Come On Apocalypse" Patton Oswalt - Now that's humor.

WILL YOU GET MARRIED?
"I Need Somebody" Iggy & the Stooges - I guess that's a yes. I've got a wedding band picked out and everything!

WILL YOU HAVE KIDS?
"Universally Speaking" Red Hot Chili Pepeprs - A metaphor?

ARE YOU GOOD AT SCHOOL?
"The Observer" The Flaming Lips - So... yes.

WHAT SONG SHOULD THEY PLAY ON YOUR BIRTHDAY?
"Harder Than Your Husband" Frank Zappa - Alright, we're definitely playing this.

WHAT SONG SHOULD THEY PLAY AT YOUR FUNERAL
"Perfect Hair" Danger Doom - My legacy.

THE SOUNDTRACK OF YOUR LIFE?
"Buckets of Rain" Bob Dylan - I can live with that.

YOU AND YOUR BEST FRIEND ARE?
"Colombian Necktie" Big Black - That's pretty harsh. Yeah? Well so's your coffee.

WHAT DO YOU SAY WHEN LIFE GETS TOO HARD?
"Goodnight Moon" Shivaree - M-O-O-N. That spells moon.

WHAT SONG WILL I DANCE TO AT MY WEDDING?
"She's A Sensation" The Ramones - Alright! A hipster wedding!

WHAT DO YOU WANT AS A CAREER?
"No Leaf Clover" Metallica - Oh, I've already got one of those.

YOUR FAVORITE SAYING?
"In Your Mind" Johnny Cash
"One foot on Jacob's ladder
And one foot in the fire,
And it all goes down in your mind."

HOW WILL I DIE?
"Clean It Up" Butthole Surfers - Messily.

THE SONG THAT YOU'LL HAVE AS THE TITLE OF THIS?
"Bullet in the Head" Rage Against the Machine

My collection may be a bit of a challenge (though there are several gimmes here), but I'll give it you guys a chance if you want.  Several songs are covers, so the original or best known version counts.  There are several alt-country numbers and jazz standards in here, with a couple of classic rock tunes as well.  Almost nothing here is from after 2000.

1. "I drive alone home from work, and I always think of her."

2. "All night, all I hear, all I hear is your heart."

3. "Once I loved, and I gave so much love to this love it was the world to me."

4. "There's a silver stream laid across the sky, and this city lifts up it's arms to it."

5. "When I first saw you standing there, a dozen thoughts went through my mind."  (Obscure)

6.  "Jennifer save me."

7. "I don't want no aggravation, when my train has left the station, if you're there or not I may not even know."

8. "The smell of the bakery from across the street got in my nose."

9. "Gotta get off, gonna get, have to get off of this ride."

10.  "God rest ye merry gentlemen, let nothing you dismay."

11. "I'm quittin' my job in the mines, gonna travel that road through the hills and the pines."  (Very obscure).

12.  "Nobody's fault but mine, it's nobody's fault but mine."

13. "How can I tell you that I missed you in all those letters that I meant to write?" (Obscure)

14. "I'm trembling, and you got the touch."

15. "I cover the waterfront, watching the ships go by."

16. "Now that you've found yourself losing your mind, are you here again?"

17. "Friday left me fumblin'' with the blues, and it's hard to win when you always lose."

18.  "Reach a hand to the crescent moon, grab hold of the hollow."

19. "Hey good lookin', what you got cookin'?"

20. "It was the time of the preacher,, when the story began 'bout the choice of a lady, and the love of a man."

21. "I don't know what you're thinking, should I stay or say goodbye?"

22. "Everybody's talkin' at me, I don't hear a word they're saying, only the echoes of my mind."

23. "Don't start them talking, I could talk all night."

24. "Back on the corner, I'm singing the blues, I can see my reflection in the shine of your shoes."

25. "So I try hard to be good and do the things I should, I give up everything that I enjoy."

I'll hit the obvious ones first on Rev's list...

12.) Nodody's Fault Led Zep
19.) Hey Good Lookin' Hank Williams Sr

To sweeten the pot, here is my list...obviously let me and Rev know which your list you are answering from.  If anything this will show off the ridiculous mix of stuff on my Ipod.

1.) Gripping the wheel his knuckles went white with desire.  The wheels of his mustang exploding on the highway like a slug from a .45.

2.) Its poetry in motion.  When she turned her eyes to me.

I'll hit the obvious ones first...

12.) Nodody's Fault Led Zep
19.) Hey Good Lookin' Hank Williams Sr

I'll give you 12 because it matches, but that wasn't what I was playing.  "Nobody's fault but Mine" is an old spiritual, the version I have is by David Bromberg.  Looks like Led Zep took the traditional lyrics and changed them a little bit.  I wasn't aware they covered it.  I've never even heard "Presence"!

10.  "God rest ye merry gentlemen, let nothing you dismay."

Well, of course, that's "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" classic Christmas song, which version you have could be anyone's guess as I'm sure there's about several hundred of them.  :)

14. "I'm trembling, and you got the touch."

Hmm. is that by chance the song "The Touch" by Alabama?

10 is correct, of course.  It's one of the dead giveaways.

14 is incorrect.  They're not all country/alt-country, which makes it more difficult.

>11.) Did you read the news today?  They say that dangers come our way.

Sounds like "Land of Confusion" by Genesis (and there was a cover by Disturbed) although that's not the first line of the song (unless, of course, you're playing a variation of the game, then it's cool.)

But, as I recall, the first line is, "I must have dreamed a thousands dreams, been haunted by a million screams, but I can hear the marching feet, moving into the street."

Wow, all that from memory!  :)

Correct!  My version of "Movin Right Along" is directly from the Muppet Movie soundtrack.

>11.) Did you read the news today?  They say that dangers come our way.

Sounds like "Land of Confusion" by Genesis (and there was a cover by Disturbed) although that's not the first line of the song (unless, of course, you're playing a variation of the game, then it's cool.)

Correct!  Ok here's whats left:

3.) I want to know, why the people are everywhere. And I want to know, where to go if I get scared. (90s rock)

10.) Am I black or white? Am I straight or gay? (really early song from a pop legend)

14.) Do you think I could have a drink, cause its so hard to swallow. Yeah, so hard to swallow. (this band got pelted with rocks in Portugal)

18.) I think you threw an oath on me Well, hold it, baby, just you wait and see (has a girl's name in the title of the song)

20.) Dance all night, play all day, don’t let nothing get in your way. (80s pop rock)

23) When you're old, nobody will know that you was a beauty, a sweet sweet beauty A sweet sweet beauty, but stone stone cold (classic rock band)

Title: Re: The "Guess the Song" game
Post by: Rev. Powell on August 01, 2008, 10:58:08 AM
I think mine were a bit too hard, so I'm going to add some hints.

1. "I drive alone home from work, and I always think of her.  Late at night I call her, but I never say a word."  Alternative rock band from the 1980s.

2. "All night, all I hear, all I hear is your heart.  I twisted you over and under to take you
The coals went so wild as they swallowed the rest."  Alt-country songstress.  Released 2000.

3. "Once I loved, and I gave so much love to this love it was the world to me."  Jazz standard.

4. "There's a silver stream laid across the sky, and this city lifts up it's arms to it."  Current "folk noir" band.  Voltron would get this one.

5. "When I first saw you standing there, a dozen thoughts went through my mind.  You know I ain't no fortuneteller, but I can damn sure tell the time."  (Obscure).  R&Bish singer songwriter from the 1990s.  I doubt anyone will get this.

6.  "Jennifer save me."  Sung by Jeff Tweedy but not with Wilco.

7. "I don't want no aggravation, when my train has left the station, if you're there or not I may not even know."  Country/folk.  I am sure at least one of you American have this Recordings.

8. "The smell of the bakery from across the street got in my nose."  Classic rock, "blue-eyed soul."

9. "Gotta get off, gonna get, have to get off of this ride.  Gotta get hold, gonna get, need to get hold of my pride."  The theme song to a very bad 1960s movie melodrama.

10.  "God rest ye merry gentlemen, let nothing you dismay." Picked: "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen."  The version is by Aimee Mann.

11. "I'm quittin' my job in the mines, gonna travel that road through the hills and the pines."  (Very obscure).  A current alt-country bar band from Dallas, TX (I believe).  The title of the song is in the quoted lyrics, so I'll give credit to anyone who guesses it.

12.  "Nobody's fault but mine, it's nobody's fault but mine." Picked: "Nobody's Fault But Mine", covered by Led Zeppelin among others.

13. "How can I tell you that I missed you in all those letters that I meant to write?" (Obscure)  Same artist as #5.

14. "I'm trembling, and you got the touch.  I'm under, and you got the power." From a 1970s female singer-songwriter.

15. "I cover the waterfront, watching the ships go by."  Classic blues ballad.

16. "Now that you've found yourself losing your mind, are you here again?"  Classic rock.  AllHallowsDay would get this for sure.

17. "Friday left me fumblin'' with the blues, and it's hard to win when you always lose."  From a jazzy early 1970s album by a cult singer-songwriter who's still active today; title of the song is in the quoted lyrics.

18.  "Reach a hand to the crescent moon, grab hold of the hollow."  Canadian alt-country band that made their mark in the 1990s but still tours today.

19. "Hey good lookin', what you got cookin'?" Picked: "Hey Good Lookin'", originally by Hank Williams.  The version I have is a cool duet by Buckwheat Zydeco and Dwight Yoakum.

20. "It was the time of the preacher,, when the story began 'bout the choice of a lady, and the love of a man." Picked: "Time of the Preaher", a Willie Nelson original covered by Johnny Cash.  (My version was a cover by Carla Bozulich).

21. "I don't know what you're thinking, should I stay or say goodbye?"  Same album as #14.

22. "Everybody's talkin' at me, I don't hear a word they're saying, only the echoes of my mind."  Picked: "Everybody's Talkin' at Me", from the movie MIDNIGHT COWBOY, composed by Harry Nilsson.  (My version was by Bobby Bare).

23. "Don't start them talking, I could talk all night.  My mind goes sleepwalking, while I'm putting the world to right."  1970s singer -songwriter, still active today.  Originally claimed by both punk and new wave.

24. "Back on the corner, I'm singing the blues, I can see my reflection in the shine of your shoes."  Another alt-country singer songwriter.  Title is in the lyrics.

25. "So I try hard to be good and do the things I should, I give up everything that I enjoy."  "But if you slip a bit and your heart says this is it, that's a necessary evil, my boy."  Underperformed jazz standard.  The first spoken words in this duet before the lyrics begin are, "Louie, you're trouble."

I don't know if everybody else's lists were finished, although I think they are. What follows is my list. Note: I cheated, I have a lot of songs on my computer I've never listened to, so I skipped ahead. Anyway...

4. "Watch out; you might get what you're after."

5. "Alcohol on my hands, I got plans to ditch myself and get outside."

6. "I dare you to be real, to touch a flickering flame."

7. "We passed upon the stairs, we spoke of was and when."

8. "No need to whine, boy, like a wind-up toy you stutter at my feet."

I think the name of the song is "People Who Died."  I'm not sure who the singer/band is, I don't think it was anyone famous - a one-hit wonder.  Not the Sex Pistols.  It's on the "Basketball Diaries" soundtrack.  Close enough?

Sorry, RCMerchant, but those aren't quite the titles. #10 though is a bit of a trick, since it's kind of a novelty song from the '90s involving the Gregorians.

#2 is indeed "f**king Hostile" by Pantera.

#17 is "I Sit in Acid" by the Lords of Acid

#3 is correct, "Tears of a Clown" by Smokey Robinson

#11 is "Feel Good Hit of the Summer" by Queens of the Stone Age (Note: That first line is almost all of the lyrics in the entire song.)

#19 is "People Who Died" by the Jim Carroll Band, the guy who the movie The Basketball Diaries was actually about.

Round Two for me.  Most of these ended up being extremely easy.

1.) At night I walk this stinkin' street past the crazies on my block.
2.) I just think of you and  I start to glow and I need your light and baby you know.
3.) Girl you're like a book with a page torn out.  You can turn a whisper to a shout.
4.) I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, that much is true.
5.) I'd kill myself for you, I'd kill you for myself.
6.) get yourself cooler, lay yourself low  coincidental murder, with nothing to show
7.) The siren sings a Lonely song of all the Wants and hungers
8.) Wake up bloodshot eyes struggle to memorize the way it felt between your thighs.
9.) Darkness, imprisoning me, all that I see, absolute horror.
10.) The lesson now is don't give in, aim for a new tomorrow.
11.) Too high to get over, to low to get under, you're stuck in the middle and the pain is thunder.
12.) If I had my druthers, I'd screw a chimpanzee.
13.) So i tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why.
14.) Now you're punching and your kicking and your shouting at me.  I'm relying on your common decency.
15.) Every now and then I get a little bit lonely and you never come around.
16.) I made excuse for a million lies but all I got was humble kidney pie.
17.) Mama says that I never never mind her.
18.) And would it pay you more to walk on water Than to wear a crown of thorns
19.) You, took all there was to take  And left me with an empty plate  And you don't care about it
20) I wanna run, i want to hid i want to tear down the walls that hold me inside.

4.) I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, that much is true.

Shoot, I know this song, just not who sings it.  Another part goes something, "Don't you want me, baby?  Don't you want me ooooh!"  Or some such.

9.) Darkness, imprisoning me, all that I see, absolute horror.

Metallica - "One"

13.) So i tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why.

Telsa - "Signs"

15.) Every now and then I get a little bit lonely and you never come around.

"Total Eclipse of the Heart" - by Bonnie Taylor (with Meatloaf) there was also a faster dance version by Nikki French.  Song's been like the theme of my life of late... :(

20) I wanna run, i want to hid i want to tear down the walls that hold me inside.

"Where the Streets Have No Name" - U2

Wow, four for sure!  That's a record for me on these things!  :)
