Title: Vacation Photo Trivia..............
Post by: Scott on July 26, 2008, 11:57:55 AM
Went on a little road  trip this past week. Here are a few clips of places we went. This isn't the whole of what we did because some places I wasn't allowed to photograph/video and others were not possible for me at the time to get video.

Can you name the locations in the video below?

A new car ! ! ! ! ! ! Oooops wrong game show.  :teddyr:

Well, you got Charlottesville correct, but what was it that made you say Charlottesville, VA? Looking for a more specific answer that I know you know. I'm going to give ya Karma for Charlottesville since your the only one to answer so far. It's ok to give out the answers. Put a spoiler warning on the top post.

Pennsylvania was a bit off. No points there.

What made say Charlottesville? Two reason, I have a brother that lives near there, so I've been there a few times. I also went to GE/Fanuc Robotics programming school there too.

EDIT: I've seen that bridge too, just can't remember where. It's in the Blue Ridge I believe.

There are only three clips that include a location in Charlottesville which include the building with pillars, a garden, and cemetary. What is the name of the location in Charlottesville?

Bingo.....

Went to Thomas Jefferson's home Monticello last week in Charlottesville, Va. He was very interested in many things from the weather to architecture. Was very involved with Washington D.C.'s archetecture which came from his earlier travels to Europe.

To learn more you can go to their website.

Can anyone guess the other locations in the video?

Monticello I recognized, if only because I was there this year. It was my first visit to Jefferson's home, and it was quite something. And since we are talking about about the homes of the past presidents, I would also recommend a visit to Washington's Mount Vernon.

The university featured in the clip is the University of Virginia. I recognized it, if only because that is what we visited after we visited Monticello. Edgar Allan Poe went there for a short time, and if you visit the university, you can see the room in which he stayed.

Other than that, I'm afraid I didn't recognize anything else in the clip, even though I've been to 49 of the 50 states. Lacking only Alaska.

BoyScoutKevin, your correct to mention Mt. Vernon along with Monticello. Both are great homes of our first few presidents. Been to both and no photos or video allowed in either of those places.

Since the video has been up for a weel I'll give you a list of the places in order. Most of our trip concentrated on National Parks and National Historic Area's.

Great Falls of the Potomac - Just a about 10 minutes North of Washington D.C. on the Maryland side. One of the most interesting falls/cascades in the U.S.. Right along the River is the Patowmack Canal and barge.

Shenandoah National Park - Drove along the length of Skyline Drive and stayed at the Skyland Hotel within the park. Great sunsets and wildlife and some nice trails. One of the trails we went on was to Dark Hollow Falls which is shown on the video.

Monticello - Home of Thomas Jefferson. Great piece of history.

Natural Bridge - History landmark that many had been to including Thomas Jefferson. The place is a real tourist trap. They have a wax museum, haunted house, a big hotel, and more on the site and they charge you for each or you can buy a package deal. We just went to the Natural Bridge. By the way in the evenings they do a light show call "Creation".

Mt. Pilot State Park - Great little place located not far from Mt. Airy, North Carolina where Andy Griffith was from and where the town and overall show idea originated.

Great Smokey Mountain National Park - On the North Carolina/Tennessee border it has peaks like the Clingmans Dome which is 6,684 ft.. Very nice park with lots to do in the towns just outside the park. Places like Gatlingburg, Pigeon Forge, Cherokee, Maggie Valley, Asheville all have lots to offer. Great destination with plenty to entertain you.

New River George National River - Wow, if you want to go white water rafting this is a good place. Purchased a couple photos of the river run, but didn't want to take my digital camera because you will definately get soaks on this trip and you won't have time to operate it along with the paddle when you hit the white water.

Lexington, Va - We stopped by here on the morning back home and found that the town had a lot of history as its home to Virginia Military Institute.

Manassas National Battlefield - Made a stop here for a stretch and watched a firearms demonstration.

National Shrine Of Immaculate Conception - Washington D.C. is the site of our last stop. It's a great place of pilgrmage and prayer. You'll really enjoy this place no matter what your religion.

Franciscan Monastery - While at the National Shrine we found out about this Monastary just a mile away, but we decided to go home and return in a couple days. Upon returning two days later we went on a guided tour. Never would you image that a place like this exist in the U.S.
