Usually I am more of a Jack Daniels guy, though I also drink Armagnac, and the occasional "good" beer - especially German brew.

Well we all know Maker's Mark is CHEEZEE's drink of choice.  With Coca Cola sometimes.  I like Bourbon and Coke, but not sure I'd mix these two.

Back during my off and on again relationship with alcohol (before it became a regular monkey) I would drink whiskey and water, tequila, or scotch and soda. I tried a variety of liquors and mixed drinks when I tended bar; boy did I regret some of those nights.

Alchohol....hmmm...I started out at 15 or so with home made cherry wine....this ain't no 12% or even 20%....this was closer to 80proof. I went on to Kesslers, than Imperial, than Jim Beam. But  as Gawd is my witness....I am trying to quit-but it's usually Black Velvet (read CHEAP) that trips me up.

Excellent, excellent choice.

In proper quantities, Maker's can make most e-mails and many people make more sense.

Here's and cheers to a happy family ...

Remember kids, always drink in moderation and know when to say when, never drink and drive. (And for some people they should never drink and type.)

I'm a virtual teetotaler. I like a drink, but I don't want to make it a day-to-day habit. That, and I'm on some medication that boosts the effect considerably. I save the drinking for special occasions.

Unfortunately, there seem to be far fewer occasions that warrant a drink than there used to be. Christmas and the odd summer barbecue. Not keeping any in the house also makes it difficult to indulge when the opportunity presents itself.

I would consider myself a beer man, or rye and Coke. But I have been known to enjoy vodka and tonic, vodka martini or scotch on the rocks. Went through a bit of a Southern Comfort phase too, but rye (Canadian whiskey) is generally the liquor of choice where I grew up. Don't have a particular favourite brand of rye, but it's usually Wiser's or Crown Royal, or the tasty but more moderately priced Alberta Premium that was always a staple at stag parties and the local bar.

Also used to like Royal Reserve. It had a sticker you could peel off the back label of the bottle - "A Proud Canadian" with a red maple leaf. We used to build up collections of the things, stuck in some prominent place. It was also customary to put a sticker on your wallet, your "badge." This was back in the early 90s. I was kind of amazed a couple of years ago when I hired a young reporter right out of college, who grew up in a little town about an hour away. He happened to pull his wallet out one day, and lo and behold, a badge. Guess that custom was more widespread than I thought.

I'm mostly a beer man, too.

I'll take a Belgian ale if I have my choce of anything to drink.

On the rare occasions I drink hard liquor, it's usually bourbon (over ice - Makers, Konb Creek or Elijah Craig).

Occasionally I'll mix coconut rum with orange juice when I'm in a fruity mood (that's your cue, Menard).

I'm a glass of beer (born ale, porter, or stout) or hard cider kind of guy.  But even that is rare.  If I have a cocktail, I like a White Russian.
But I don't have a drink a month I bet.

And some people should just never drive at all  :teddyr:

I used to drink Jack Daniels, then it was peppermint schnapps.  Never touch the hard stuff any more, just beer.  And my taste in beer is about as bad as my taste in movies - just gimme a six pack of Budweiser on Friday night and another on Saturday.  Oh and a couple glasses of wine (white, not any of that sour red stuff) on Saturday and Sunday before dinner.  The wife insists.  Sometimes we even get the fancy stuff with the cork in the bottle.  Screw off cap tastes just as good if you ask me.

Excellent choice, and since I've had a trying day at work I think I'll imbibe a shot or two, if Poogie reminds me that I've got to work tomorrow I'll just say Andrew and CheeseFlixz talked me into it.

(Sorry, but comparing German beer to Belgian beer is like comparing the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to the Yokohama BayStars. While both of the latter have some merit due to novelty and "strangeness", they are in a different league. That, and I'm German)

Germans make lagers, Belgians and the English make ales.  It's like comparing white and red wines.  Germans definitely make the best lagers, but I just prefer ales.

I'm not sure all the Belgian beer is ale. But I now that the German Kölsch and Altbier belong to the "ale family". As far as I know, the distinction nowadays is top-fermented for ales and bottom-fermented for lagers. There is a long tradition of "beer wars" here, that is, everybody thinks the people of a certain part along the river Rhine are a bit strange, mostly due to the fact they drink top-fermented beer (and go totally nuts on Carnival - coincidence?). Funny thing is, that the people of, say, Cologne drink Kölsch and always have the greatest fuss with the people of, say, Düsseldorf, where they drink Altbier. Both top-fermented, so quite different of the Pils everybody else drinks over here...

Personally, I prefer Pils, but as you said, it is a bit like the red/white wine thing.
My quarrel with Belgian derives from only one occasion when I tried vast amounts of different brands in Brussels and most of them had awkward flavours like strawberry, mint, etc.

I'm strictly a beer man. I find that if I drink hard alcohol, I have a very hard time judging my limits. That's how I learned Jim Beam is never my friend; we've had some very serious arguments. Of course, when I do drink hard alcohol I tend towards the Wild Turkey 101. I'm not proud.

As far as beer goes, my favorite by far is Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. It has a crispness about it that is perfect for the hot weather here in Phoenix. Sierra Nevada is expensive though. My favorite cheap beer is Icehouse. (I know, I know.) For my money, the best brand of American p**swater.

Lately I've been drinking a lot of Tecate, because it's the best cheap beer the Circle K by my house sells. I like the stuff, but it's never going to win any awards.

Strange you should mention that, Mofo: a Belgian friend of mine said that no one should ever drink Heineken as, according to him, it has 46% horse pee in it. He said that the label says hors concours which actually translates as "out of competition", not horse pee.

Do you mean lambic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lambic)s?  I love a nice sour kriek, but I rarely have the opportunity to get one here in the US and they're very expensive in specialty shops.  But they don't taste much like traditional beer, actually more like wine in some cases.

I never realized altbier was top-fermented.  Maybe that's why it's my favorite type of German beer.

Mofo: Sierra Nevada !  Try their porter when fall/winter rolls around if you can find it.  For a cheap American beer, I like Dundee's Honey Brown.

Could be, but my memory is all blurry....
However, I think it was cheaper stuff, while lambic sounds more pricy. Interesting though. There is something called beerpost here with reasonable prices for specialities shipped conveniently to your home. I might try it. BTW, last thing I ordered was Sam Adams, the favorite beer of my girlfriend when she studies in the States for a couple of years....

A blurry memory is usually the sign of a great beer sampling session.   :drink:

Some of Sam Adams specialty beers aren't bad, but the regular brand is just a little above average, IMO.  There are better American beers.  Here's a pretty good list (http://www.mensjournal.com/feature/0610/bestbeer.html), though most are ales: I can vouch for the Dogfish and the Sam Adams, and some of the opthers are good but not top 25 material in my opinion. I'd add Sierra Nevada Porter and Anchor Steam to this list.

I can not believe you people are polluting a perfectly good thread on the finest Kentucky Bourbon every made with a bunch of cheap beer talk.

And Sam Adams ... the WORST after taste I've ever had in a beer ... nay paint thinner.

That reminds me of something a taxi driver said to a friend of mine somewhere in Eastern Europe when they were backpacking: Taxi driver, after having a conversation with my friend about beer, says: "Well I drink beer, but I also drink alchohol..."

Two funny things this thread has brought to my mind:

According to my German professor, the German word for American beer is "Kamelep**se", or, "Camel p**s."

The real Samuel Adams was a mediocre brewer at best.  As I recall, Ben Franklin called Sam Adam's lager "horse p**s."

I'm neither a heavy nor a regular drinker.  A rum and coke after a particularly bad day is about my maximum.
